Climber and record breaker Thomas Bubendorfer is used to facing death and this has driven him to think about the meaning of life.

The Austrian, 49, began his climbing career at the age of 12.At 16, he was the youngest solo rock climber to conquer the Alps.At 18, he scaled the 7,000 meter Pamir Plateau, in Central Asia.

Bubendorfer climbed Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America, within 16 hours. He is famed for conquering five mountains in the Dolomites, Italy, in just one day.

Beginning in 2010 and along with Chinese climbers, he has now set his sights on mountains over 6,000 meters in Tibet autonomous region.

The lecturer and writer has published six books, based on his climbing experiences, and Life is Like Climbing was recently published by China Development Press.Bubendorfer wrote it in German, and it was translated by Tang Wenping.

In Bubendorfer's opinion, the ultimate goal of mountain climbing is to search for and answer the big questions in life. The peak is not the ultimate aim, but the natural result of climbing, an activity in which he puts his heart and soul, he says.

He describes the feeling of standing on a ridge: "I seemed to get rid of time and the surroundings, and enter a new world. The world exists both internally and externally."

For the procrastinator, he writes: "No decision, no action. If I don't make a decision, I have to take action sooner or later."

His analysis of fear is: "(It) is the precondition for courage.Fear is the protection against the hidden dangers that seemed safe."

Bubendorfer's life is full of wisdom and philosophy. As he says: "(Life is) like a continuous mountain range with peaks and troughs (低谷).Only when you return to the bottom temporarily, can you start climbing again."

Ed Viesturs grew up in Rockford, Illinois, where the tallest thing on the ground was the water tower. But on Thursday, Viesturs became the only American to climb to the top of the world’s 14 highest mountains.

His last hike was up Mount Annapurna, in Asia’s snowcapped Himalayas. At 26,545 feet, its top is the 10th highest in the world. It is the mountain that inspired him to start climbing.

“It seems to be the most difficult, the most dangerous,” said Viesturs. “There’s no simple way to climb it. There are threatening avalanches (雪崩) and ice falls that protect the mountain.”

In high school, Viesturs read French climber Maurice Herzog’s story of climbing the icy Annapurna. Herzog’s story was of frostbite (冻伤) and difficulty and near-death experiences. Viesturs was hooked right away.

Viesturs got his start on Washington’s Mount Rainier in 1977, guiding hikes in the summer. Fifteen years ago, he set out to walk up to the world’s highest tops. Finally, he’s done.

The pioneering climber talks about mountains as if they were living creatures that should be treated with respect. “You have to use all of your senses, all of your abilities to see if the mountain will let you climb it,” said Viesturs. “If we have the patience and the respect, and if we’re here at the right time, under the right conditions, they allow us to go up, and allow us to come down.”

What’s next for a man who can’t stop climbing? “I’m going to hold my wife and kids and enjoy the summer,” says Viesturs. But for a man who has climbed the world’s 14 tallest mountains, he will probably soon start another adventure.

The author used Viestures’ words in Paragraph 6 to support an opinion that       .

A. mountain climbing is a dangerous sport

B. mountains should be regarded as living creatures

C. mountain climbing needs more skills than physical energy

D. those who like mountain climbing won’t stop climbing

The underlined word “hooked” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by ________.

A. frightened       B. discouraged      C. interested        D. upset

What’s the next probable plan of Viestures?

A. Stopping climbing and staying with his family.

B. Climbing to the top of the world’s 14 tallest mountains again.

C. Writing down the experiences about his adventure.

D. Climbing another one of the highest mountains.

They are the sort of friends who are so close they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other is there to catch him.

They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident, and Corbett, an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2,000-foot rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes(路线).

During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes(尖状物)that guided the ropes and climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days.

Wellman’s job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone. In all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.

However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured.” Wellman said. Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.

Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.

“Your partner can save your life — you can save your partner’s life,” Wellman said as the pair received congratulations from friends. “There are real close ties.”

64. Which of the following was a challenge for Corbett in climbing Half Dome?

A. To climb up to remove the spikes.         B. To climb it twice

C. To do 5,000 pull-ups up the rope.          D. To lock the rope in place.

65. Why did the two men never talk about climbing when they first met?

A. Corbett was poorly trained.

B. Wellman had lost interest in climbing.

C. Corbett didn’t want to hurt Wellman.

D. Wellman hadn’t decided whether to climb again.

66. What do we know about Wellman?

A. He climbed Half Dome by himself.

B. He was disabled in a traffic accident.

C. He stopped rock-climbing for some time.

D. He was saved by Corbett during the climb.

67. The main idea of the text is that             .

If you have ever been rock climbing, then you will know that it is not a very easy sport. In fact you probably felt quite defeated when you first tried to do any serious climbing. Indoor and outdoor rock climbing are both extremely demanding and, like anything else, require practice, to get good at. What most people don’t know is that the sport of rock climbing is one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports there is.

There are three basic types of rock climbing. Top roping is probably one of the most common types and is basically climbing with a partner. The second type, which is very similar to top roping, is called lead climbing. In both of these types of rock climbing the climber can sit off the wall and rest on the rope.

The third type of rock climbing is called bouldering. Bouldering is a type of free climbing without any ropes. This is the most demanding of all climbing types. The climber must be able to complete the climbing without taking a rest on the rope.

Believe it or not, climbing is said to be about 75% legs and only 25% arms. To climb efficiently and successfully, a person needs to have a wonderful technique. One of the major rules of rock climbing is to always have three points touching the wall, whether it is both feet and one hand, or one foot and both hands, as it is much easier to have your weight rest on three points than on two. Another important idea to grasp is that your arms in most cases will do the climbing; they only hold you into the wall so that your legs are actually pushing you upward. Also, the closer you are to the wall, the easier it is to climb.

Rock climbing may sound a bit too extreme for the everyday person but it really is an amazing workout. Once you get into the sport, and learn how to position your body and rest your weight, then you can begin to deal with some difficult problems. The great thing about rock climbing is that it is mentally challenging as well. You are constantly analyzing the way your body moves and how to do certain moves on the wall. For anyone who wants to get into shape, rock climbing is a fun and effective way to exercise muscles.
