Leaning against my parents’ wardrobe in the bedroom, I, six years old then, 1 to their casual talk about budgets and paychecks. I 2 that my family was poor.
Their money talk continued, and a thought 3 me: Dad had to4 for me. While the story of my birth ranked as a bedtime favorite, I had never considered hospital bills, the meals I’d eaten, or the 5 of my clothes.
“Daddy,” I interrupted, “how much did I cost?” “Oh, let me see. About a million dollars.”
A million dollars! Because of me, Dad 6 two jobs. Because of me, he wore 7 jeans, drove an old car, and had his shoes 8 over and over again.
I went to the kitchen. From a shelf, I took my granny-shaped 9, which held every penny I owned – seven dollars. I pulled the bank’s plug out, and 10 the coins into my hand. I had often 11 with these coins in secret and I felt secure pleasure in just knowing they were there.
Whether the topic had changed when I returned to my parents’ bedroom, I didn’t 12. Tugging ( 用力拉 ) on Dad’s shirt, I 13 out my first payment on a million dollars.
“Here,” I said. “Maybe this will 14 to pay for me.”
“What?” Dad’s confused look 15 my own. Didn’t he remember what he’d said? Didn’t the sight of me 16 him of how much I cost?
My tear-filled eyes, which I couldn’t seem to take off the bank, finally made 17 to him.
Dad knelt down and pulled me 18 . “You didn’t cost a million dollars, but you’re 19 a million million dollars. And if that’s what I’d have to pay for you, I would do it.”
Today, I often pull out this memory, think about it and feel the 20 weight of it in my heart.

Passing Your Love On
Waiting for the airplane to take off, I was happy to get a seat by myself. Just then, an air hostess approached me and asked, “Would you mind 1your seat? A couple would like to sit together.” The only 2seat was next to a girl with her arms in casts(石膏绷带), a black-and-blue face, and a sad 3. “No way am I going to sit there,” I thought immediately. But a soft voice spoke, “She needs help.” Finally, I 4to move to that seat.
The girl was named Kathy. She had been in a car accident and 5was on her way for 6.
When the snack and juice arrived, it did not take me long to 7that Kathy would not be able to 8herself. I considered 9to feed her but hesitated, as it seemed too 10to offer a service to a 11. But then I realized that Kathy’s need was more 12than my discomfort. I offered to help her eat, and 13she was uncomfortable to accept, she 14as I expected. We became closer and closer in a short period of time. By the end of the five-hour trip, my heart had 15, and the time was really 16spent than if I had just sat by myself.
I was very glad I had reached 17my comfort zone to sit next to Kathy and feed her. Love 18flows beyond human borders and removes the fears that keep us 19. When we stretch to serve another, we grow to live 20a larger and more rewarding world.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? This is one of life’s 1 questions and people have been debating about it for thousands of years. Now scientists believe they have solved this 2. Researchers from Sheffield and Warwick Universities in England discovered the answer 3. They used a super computer to observe the shell-making process while a new shell was 4. Then they found one protein called OCl7 that is 5 for forming eggshell. This is only found inside a chicken’s body, which is proof that the 6 came first. The team was 7 looking at how animals and birds make eggshells but suddenly made their surprising 8. The big question now is where chickens came from. The 9 is from dinosaurs.
The research team said eggshells are one of nature’s most 10 creations. Professor John Harding from the team told reporters: “Understanding how chickens make eggshells is fascinating in itself, but it can also be 11 in designing new materials.” Eggshells are very lightweight but incredibly strong. Even the most up-to-date materials 12 by the world’s top engineers can not produce anything as 13 as an eggshell. Professor Harding added that 14 eggshells could help to cure bone diseases and design materials for the construction industry.“Nature has found wonderful ways that 15 for all kinds of problems in materials science and technology — we can learn a lot from them.” he said.

A Beautiful Dress
My neighbor’s eight-year-old daughter used to live in the countryside, her native place. Recently her parents1her to town to live with them. Wild and uneducated, she would use2words when she was angry. Sometimes she went so far as to3on the ground, to the4of all people around. Her parents tried to5her by beating and kicking. However, she became more6. Finally they became thoroughly7with her.
One day their next-door8, a retired teacher, gave the girl a snow-white dress, which was very9. It immediately caught the girl’s10and made them shine brightly.
The girl put on the dress and became quite a11person. She no longer acted rudely or hit others. She12seldom rolled on the floor. She knew running wild was not13for her in a beautiful dress. Since then, the girl had been14, neat, and lovely.
The story set me 15a lot. Perhaps everyone has a beautiful dress 16somewhere in his or her heart. Only some people are not aware of it,17it or take no notice of it.18is a powerful force or weapon — that’s something19by many of us. It can arouse fine qualities that humans are20with but have so far hidden somewhere. It has a soul-shaking influence that is indeed unmatched.

Fatimah Bamun dropped out of Balizenda Primary School in the first grade, when her father refused to buy her pencils and paper. Only after her teachers said to him that his daughter showed unusual promise(有希望) did he change his mind. Today, Fatimah, 14, tall and slender, studies math in a dirt-floored fourth-grade classroom.
Whether she will reach the fifth grade is another matter. Fatimah is facing the realities of a school with no toilet, no water, no hope of privacy (隐私) other than the shadow of a bush, and no girlfriends with whom to share feelings. Fatimah is the only girl of the 23 students in her class. In fact, in a school of 178 students, she is one of the only three girls who have made it past the third grade.
“I have no friend in the class,” she said. “Most of my friends have dropped out to get married. So during the break, I just sit in the classroom and read.”
Her father, however, now says he is fully behind her. “The people from the government are all the time telling us to send our daughters to school, and I am listening to these people,” he said.
But in many cases, parents don’t listen. Parents think that if the girls stay home, they can help with the harvesting, fetch the water and collect the firewood. So they take them out of school.
In a region where poverty, tradition and ignorance make about 24 million girls not even have an elementary school education. There are many other barriers (障碍) that prevent girls going to school, such as the lack of school toilets and water.
The issue is not only equality. The World Bank thinks that if women in sub-Saharan Africa had equal education, land and other wealth, the region’s economy could improve greatly. There is a connection between growth in Africa and sex equality. It is of great importance but still ignored by so many people.
