Text 2 W: Have you finished that article on private school yet? W: The trouble is that I've got two articles to write and the boss sent me out to cover the big fire. Text 3 W: What's the matter with you today? M: I'm not sure. I think I'm coming down with a cold or something. Text 4 W: Did you get my message about the meeting on Monday? M: Yes, I did. But I'm still not quite sure what the meeting is about. Not bad news, I hope. Text 5 W: Bob, are you going straight home after school today? M: No. I have a class until one o'clock, and after that I'm going to spend a couple of hours at the library before going home. Text 6 M: Are you feeling OK, Jane? You look pretty tired. W: My sister and I went to a birthday party for my brother last night. I didn't get much sleep. M: Where did you have the party? W: It was at my aunt's house. Then, right after the party, I had to start typing a history paper. It had to be handed in first thing this morning. I was kind of nervous because the professor said he wouldn't accept any late papers. M: I wonder how you did it. I can't handle a pressing situation like that. W: Well, I just turned the paper in, and now I'm going home to bed. See you. Text 7 W: What's the matter with you, honey? You Look upset. M: It's us. W: What do you mean by“us”? M: Well, we used to talk to each other before we were married. Remember? W: What do you mean? We're talking now, aren't we? M: Oh yes, but we used to do so much together. W: We still go to the cinema together, don't we? M: Yes, but we used to go out for walks together, and we used to do silly things together, like running through the park. W: Yes, I remember. I used to catch terrible colds. M: But we never used to quarrel. You used to think I was wonderful. Once…Where are you going? W: Back to live with my parents. That's something else we used to do before we were married. Remember? Text 8 W: How long are you going to be at the gas station? M: I don't know for sure. Not long if they're not busy. Maybe an hour. W: Could you drop me off at the department store? I want to look at some shoes they advertised on sale. M: Sure thing. I'll probably go over to the stamp market and talk to Tim while they're fixing the car. W: Where should I meet you then? M: I can pick you up in an hour and a half in front of the museum. Is that OK? W: Fine with me. I'll see you then. Text 9 M: Good morning, madam. Are you being served? W: Not yet. Could you show me the overcoat, the silver gray one in the middle? M: Certainly. You've got excellent taste. It's very nice and it's 100 percent wool. W: I'd like it. Can I try it on? M: Certainly. Wow, it looks perfect on you, madam. W: I think so. But a slightly larger size would be better. M: What about this one? W: This fits me well. How much do you ask? M: Only a hundred and seventy dollars. W: OK, I'll take it. And I'd like the blue jacket on the right. How much is it? M: Two hundred and fifteen dollars. W: Oh, it's a bit too expensive, I'm afraid. M: Anything else? W: No, thanks. Text 10 In your school bags most of you may have a pencil, some kinds of pens, a ruler and some books. None of these things grows in the field, right? They were all made in factories and invented by someone. There have not always been pencils and pens, rulers and books. Thousands of years ago no one knew about these things. Who invented them? We don't always know. There have been many thousands of inventions, large and small, in the human history. Some of these inventions have changed the world, such as paper, printing and radio, and we know the inventors. But we have forgotten most of the other inventors. Who invented the clock, for example, or the lock to the door? We don't know. There have been thousands of inventors and we should thank them for their clever ideas. Will you be one of them when you grow up? |
