The Japanese economy is at a standstill,Japan ’ s government has said, as concerns about the

strong yen(曰元)continue to grow. The recovery in the economy was “pausing",the Cabinet Office said in a monthly statement.

It is the most negative that the government has been about the economy in nearly two years. The rising yen and a slowdown in global demand for Japanese exports were blamed for the setback.

In recent months, the government has insisted that the economy is “picking up". But it said it now expected the economy to Femain weak for some time, with “weakening" exports a chief concern. It said shipments to Asia in particular were becoming weaker, further hitting exporters that are already suffering from the strong yen.

The yen remains near a 15 - year high against the US dollar, despite the financial interfer-ence ( 干预)in the currency markets last month for the first time in six years.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan(菅直人)has also passed a $ 63 billion stimulus(剌激)package in an effort to protect exporters who have seen the poor exchange rate eat into their prof-its. At the close of markets in Tokyo,the yen was trading at 81.44 yen to the dollar, just off the high of 81.27 yen.

"If the economy turns out as expected, we may end up describing the current situation as a soft patch,” one of die government officials said ’ “ But if it comes under further downward pressure, it could end up slipping into recession (衰退).”

The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.

However, the idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon① in 1909. [1]Some people's ears produce wax like busy little bees. This can be a problem even though earwax appears to serve an important purpose. Experts say it protects and cleans the ear. When people lose legs after accidents or illnesses, emergency care and artificial limbs(假肢)often allow them to walk again. Newts (蝾螈) in the same situation, on the other hand, can grow limbs back on their own! Scientists have known for a long time that certain animals can re-grow limbs, but they haven’t quite figured out how these creatures do it.

Researchers have now come up with some new ideas. Their work may give people the ability to re-grow lost limbs. The researchers started with two simple experiments:when you cut a newt’s leg at the ankle, only the foot grows back;when you cut off a leg at the very end, the whole leg grows back. In both cases, the re-growth begins with stem cells. Stem cells can develop into nearly any type of cell in the body.

In its study, a British team focused on a protein called n-AG. When the team prevented nerves in a limb from growing, but added the n-AG protein to stem cells in the limb, the limb still re-grew. That protein seems to guide limb re-growth. People have proteins that are similar to n-AG. Further research into these materials may someday help human limbs recover by themselves.
