The dream of my travel was to be Paris, the city I'd always longed to see. But now I was frightened to travel without a companion.I steeled myself and went anyway.I arrived at the train station in Paris panicked.Pulling my red suitcase behind me,I was pushed by sweaty travelers. On my first Metro ride, I encountered a clumsy pickpocket.I melted him with a look, and he eased his hand from my purse to fade into the crowded car. At my stop,I carried my heavy suitcase up the steep stairs and froze in confusion.Somewhere in this confusing city my hotel was hidden, but suddenly I couldn’t read my own directions.I stopped two people. Both greeted me with that Parisian face that said:"Yes, I speak English, but you'll have to struggle with your French if you want to talk to me."

When I finally found the hotel,my heart was pounding. Then when I saw my room, I couldn't stay.Could I? The wallpaper looked like it had been through a fire. The bathroom was down the hall, and the window looked out onto the brick wall of another building.Welcome to Paris. It was my third week away from home and my kids, and I had arrived in the most romantic city in the world, alone, lonely and very scared.

The most important thing I did in Paris happened at that moment. I knew that if I didn't go out, right then, and find a place to have dinner,I would hide in this place my entire time in Paris. I might never learn to enjoy the world as a single individual. So I went out.Evening in Paris was light and warm.I strolled along a winding path, listening to birds sing, watching children float toy sailboats in a huge fountain.Paris was beautiful. And I was here alone but suddenly not lonely. My sense of accomplishment at overcoming my fear had left me feeling free, not abandoned.

During my week's stay in Paris, I did everything there was to do,and it was the greatest week of my European vacation.I returned home a believer in the healing power of solitary travel.Traveling alone makes up for its problems by demanding self-reliance and building the kind of confidence that serves the single life well.Certainly Paris became my metaphor(比喻说法)for addressing life's challenges on my own.Now when I meet an obstacle I just say to myself: If I can go to Paris,I can go anywhere.

“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.”

—Jeff Bezos

I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.

I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all.

After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.

1.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?

2.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?

A. He would be very excited if he tried it out.

B. The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.

C. He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.

D. The decision not to try the online bookstore would terrify him.

3.We can know from the passage that ________.

A. the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author

B. the author might not regret if he failed the idea

C. the author wanted someone else to try the idea

D. the author might go back to his boss if he failed

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Cleverness and Kindness

B. The Starting of Amazon

C. We Are What We Choose

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. 1. However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace (支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.

Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the "ten and two" position.

Undo your seatbelt. 2. Untie the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.

3. Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.

Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car. 4.

Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. 5. While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.

A. Open the window as soon as you hit the water.

B. Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.

C. It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.

D. Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning.

E. In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.

F. This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.

G. But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.
