My Dream College

It¡¯s my great honor to share my dream college with you. As we all know, going to college has been attached great significance to us Chinese students. And we are sparing no effort to be admitted by our dream college.

Definitely, my dream college is Fudan University, which in my heart, is well-known for her first-class education. On the one hand, she has attracted me since I was a child because my mother graduated from Fudan University. Meanwhile, Fudan University is located in ShangHai, which is an international city where I can get a lot of knowledge and experience. Above all, I am sure it is where I will go on fighting for my better future.

To realize my dream, whatever challenge I will face, I will never give in. Though it is a great challenge for me to realize my dream, I will make a detailed plan and make use of every minute to make it to Fudan University.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿If you've ever been to a social gathering, you might feel awkward and uncomfortable. While social gatherings can be very enjoyable, especially when you are surrounded by people whose company you enjoy, there are social events that you sometimes find yourself wishing you were someplace else. Such occasions can sometimes be the cause of much anxiety and self-consciousness. You may even feel like everyone else is having a good time except for you. Yet the truth is that everyone has felt shy and awkward on occasion. One of the best ways to overcome self-consciousness or get past your feelings of shyness at social gatherings is to focus on the people around you. If you can remember that other people might also be feeling awkward or shy, you might find the thought of speaking to them less overwhelming.

The next time there is a social event you feel nervous about attending, you may want to try this exercise: Spend some time with your eyes closed and breathe deeply. When you feel ready, create your own zone of comfort by visualizing yourself surrounded in a warm white light that is protective yet accepting of others. Imagine people at the event being drawn to you because of the open and warm feelings that you are showing. When you arrive at the event, take a moment to spread this same light of loving acceptance to everyone around you.

Smile and greet people warmly. Try going up to someone who is standing alone and introduce yourself. When you show acceptance and openness, people can't help but respond to you in kind.

Focusing on how we can make other people at a social gathering feel at ease can help us forget about our own insecurities. The next time you attend a social gathering, invite people to join you in your zone of comfort that you have so lovingly and intentionally created. Let yourself enjoy being encircled in the warmth of their friendships.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿After I mastered my first (Э×àÇú) at age 14, my parents decided to get me a nice violin. I tried out dozens of instruments before I found my match: a German violin. It was beautiful, but what I liked best about it was its voice. Confident and strong, it was everything I longed to be.

I'm not sure how much that violin cost, but my parents made me promise never to let it out of my sight. They didn't understand that dragging a large violin caseran counter tomy daily middle school task of being invisible (¿´²»¼ûµÄ). I was a strange, absent-minded kid. When I spoke up in class, my comments brought confused silence from teachers and wild laughter from students. Like a deer in a wolf pack, I tried to be quiet and still.

In contrast, my new violin was almost shockingly loud. For one glorious hour every day, I was showered with attention. Everyone wanted to hear what I had to say.

Between classes, I bent under the combined weight of my violin case and a backpack filled with books. My posture suffered, but my confidence grew. With my violin by my side, I found my voice. More and more, I contributed to class discussions and even made a couple of friends.

Today, I'mjust an amateur violinist with a regular day job. As I sit in my community orchestra, sometimes I feel jealous(¼µ¶ÊµÄ) my fellow musicians¡¯ instruments with their elegant voices. I may not be the best violinist around, but at least I'm still the loudest.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor in the United States. Her success opened the way for other women who wanted to do more than nursing. She was born in England in 1821 and her family moved to America when she was eleven years old.

The Blackwell girls received the same education as their brothers. This was most unusual in those days. Their father died young and they had very little money to live on. Elizabeth and her sisters taught at school. Then a woman dying of cancer urged Elizabeth to study medicine, saying that a woman doctor would have saved her from her worst sufferings. Nearly everyone said a girl should not go to medical school, but she managed to enter Geneva College in New York State. She graduated in 1849 at the head of her class and received the first medical degree ever given to a woman.

Next, Dr. Blackwell went to Paris. Her only chance of training was in a hospital where women came to have their babies. Four months later, while she was working in the French hospital, her left eye became dangerously infected (¸ÐȾ). She lost the eye. She was very disappointed. But she was soon back at work again, this time in London, England. There she met many famous scientists.

Weighing the Options

Making decisions when shopping is often a tough call. Even if you¡¯re satisfied with the first dress you try on, would you go on looking for alternatives, comparing styles and prices, until literally dropped dead?

Psychology researchers have studied how people make decisions and concluded there are two basic styles. ¡°Maximizers¡± like to take their time and weigh a wide range of options¡ªsometimes every possible one¡ªbefore choosing. ¡°Satisficers¡± would rather be fast than thorough.

16. __________ So even if they see what would seem to meet their requirements, they can¡¯t make a decision until after they¡¯ve examined every option to make sure that they¡¯re making the best possible choice. Researchers followed 548 job-seeking college seniors at 11 schools from October through their graduation in June. They found that the maximizers landed better jobs. 17. _________

¡°The maximizer is kicking himself because he can¡¯t examine every option and at some point had to just pick something,¡± they say. ¡°Maximizers make good decisions and end up feeling bad about them. 18. _________

Satisficers also have high standards, but they are happier than maximizers. Maximizers tend to be more depressed and to report a lower satisfaction with life, their research found.

Faced with so many choices in our lives, we need to learn how not to waste time and energy on our decision-making.

19. ________ For instance, if you¡¯re picking a restaurant for a lunch meeting, first deciding on a certain part of town or type of cuisine can narrow your options.

Once you¡¯ve arrived at a decision, stick with it. 20. __________ To limit the number of options you can set a time limit for decision-making. Say you are buying a new bag, you could spend an amount of time studying features, price and value¡ªbut if you give yourself only five minutes to make a decision, and there are only these bags you can consider, you¡¯ll save time. You¡¯ll be happier with your decision, too.

A. The other is to make decisions more accurately at the beginning.

B. Satisficers make good decisions and end up feeling good.

C. First of all, decrease your range of options.

D. Comparing is often a must when you make a decision.

E. Maximizers are people who want the best.

F. Just accept that no decision is ever completely perfect.

G. Their starting salaries were 20 percent higher but they felt worse about their jobs.
