After 10 seasons wearing the No.8 on his back, Kobe Bryant will become No.24 next season. The reason for the surprising decision by the Los Angeles Lakers super guard last week has become a hot topic for debate.

Bryant wore No.24 when he was in early high school, but he changed to No.33 in his senior year. He switched to No.8 when he was selected by the Lakers in 1996, and has been not changed since.

Bryant has refused to explain the decision until the end of the play-offs. So guessing Bryant’s motive has become a popular game among NBA fans and newspaper columnists.

There are all kinds of speculations(猜测). Many say that Bryant wants to leave the past behind and have a fresh start. He has often been criticized for playing to benefit himself and not the team as a whole. Others say that he may be trying to compare himself to Michael Jordan. Jordan was famous for his No. 23 jersey(运动衫). Some, such as NBC Sport columnist Michael Ventre, argue that it is “all about money”. Bryant will make more money by selling new jersey to his fans.

Some speculations are more about fun. For example, there is an opinion that Kobe is actually just a diehard fan of the popular TV drama “24”.

All this talk has turned the number change into a major issue. It seems that there is a lot of fuss over something that should be pretty simple.

Jersey numbers have their own special significance in American sports, especially basketball. Players choose their number when they join a team and they usually stick with that number for the rest of their career. When a great player retires, his team will honor him by retiring his number.

A. He wants to leave his past behind and have a fresh start.

B. He wants to compare himself to Jordan.

C. He wants to earn more money.

D. He wants to show that he is man of great importance.

71. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. When a great player retires, his team will reward him with much money.

B. A lucky number will be passed on to a new player.

C. An outstanding player’s jersey number won’t be used after his retirement.

I fell in love with England because it was quaint (古雅)—all those little houses, looking terribly old-fashioned but nice, like dolls’ houses. I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved London. I’ve slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it’s an ugly town now.

Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners. The fair play is going, unfortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners—people shut doors heavily in your face and politeness is disappearing.

I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. You’re forced to live indoors. In Paris I go out much more, to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub, and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafes are not terribly nice.

As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb on taxis because I will not take public transport after 10 p. m. I used to use it, but now I’m afraid.

The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and that’s typically French. In Middlesex I had a neighbour who is 82 now. His family only lived two miles away, but I took him to France for Christmas once because he was always alone.

1.The writer doesn’t like London because she ______.

A.has lived there for seventeen years

B.prefers to live in an old-fashioned house

C.is not used to the life there now

D.has to be polite to everyone she meets there

2.Where do people usually meet their friends in England?

A.In a pub.          B.In a cafe.          C.In a restaurant.     D.In a nightclub.

3.The writer took her neighbour to France for Christmas because he ______.

A.had never been to France                 B.was from a typical French family

C.didn't like the British idea of family          D.felt lonely in England

On a cold January morning in a Washington, DC Metro Station, a man with a violin played for about an hour. During that time about 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He stopped for a few seconds and then hurried on. Four minutes later the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat without stopping and continued to walk. After 6 minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and walked away. After 10 minutes, a 3-year-old boy stopped but his mother dragged him along hurriedly. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

Finally only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money, but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $ 32. When he finished playing, no one applauded.

The violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate (复杂的) pieces ever written, with a violin worth $ 3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold out a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $ 100 each.

The program was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about understanding, taste, and people’s social position. In a common place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we appreciate beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

If we do not take a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

1. The first paragraph is aimed to tell us ______.

     A. the man chose a bad place for playing      B. what background the story was set in

     C. how busy people were that morning         D. many people showed interest in music

2.We can infer from the passage that ______.

     A. none of the passers-by were fond of music

     B. beauty can only be enjoyed in particular places

C. in a way, the violinist was mistaken as a beggar

D. Joshua Bell first played the violin in the station

3.According to the writer, people should _____.

     A. listen to as many great musicians as possible

     B. try to create beautiful things for others to enjoy

     C. show kindness to anyone whether they’re rich or not

     D. notice and appreciate what’s going on in their daily life
