题目内容

When my brother and I were young,my mum would take us on Transportation Days.

It goes like this: You can’t take any means of transportation more than once. We would start from home, walking two blocks to the rail station. We’d take the train into the city centre, then a bus, switching to the tram, then maybe a taxi. We always considered taking a horse carriage in the historic district, but we didn’t like the way the horses were treated,so we never did. At the end of the day,we took the subway to our closest station, where Mum’s friend was waiting to give us a ride home—our first car ride of the day.

The good thing about Transportation Days is not only that Mum taught us how to get around. She was born to be multimodal (多方式的).She understood that depending on cars only was a failure of imagination and, above all,a failure of confidence—the product of a childhood not spent exploring subway tunnels.

Once you learn the route map and step with certainty over the gap between the train and the platform, nothing is frightening anymore. New cities are just light-rail lines to be explored. And your personal car,if you have one, becomes just one more tool in the toolbox—and often an inadequate one, limiting both your mobility and your wallet.

On Transportation Days,we might stop for lunch on Chestnut Street or buy a new book or toy,but the transportation was the point. First,it was exciting enough to watch the world speed by from the train window. As I got older,my mum helped me unlock the mysteries that would otherwise have paralyzed my first attempts to do it myself: How do I know where to get off? How do I know how much it costs? How do I know when I need tickets, and where to get them? What track, what line, which direction, where’s the stop, and will I get wet when we go under the river?

I’m writing this right now on an airplane,a means we didn’t try on our Transportation Days and,we now know, the dirtiest and most polluting of them all. My flight routed me through Philadelphia. My multimodal mum met me for dinner in the airport. She took a train to meet me.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain for almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. If we didn’t see some rain soon,we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son,Billy, walking towards the woods. He was obviously walking with great effort. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again, towards the house.

Moments later, however,he was once again walking towards the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally,my curiosity got the best of me. I went out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns (荆棘) slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. As I leaned in to spy on him,I saw the most amazing site.

Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from the heavy loss of water, lifting its head with great effort to drink the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hands.

I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart working so hard to save a life. As my tears began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops...and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky.  It was as if God,himself, was weeping with pride.

SUMMER SKIN CARE—RIGHT OR WRONG?

(1) Always wear a baseball cap. It protects you from the sun and looks cool, too.

RIGHT Sun cream starts to work twenty minutes after you put it on.

(7) On a hot sunny day, wear light-coloured clothes— white and yellow are best.

WRONG Light-coloured clothes don’t protect you from the sun. The best solution is to wear dark-coloured clothes.

(3) Put sun cream around your eyes and on your eyelids to protect them from the sun.

WRONG Sun cream hurts the eyes. Wear sunglasses instead.

(8) You need to spend time in the sun for healthy skin.

RIGHT You need to spend time in the sun to get enough vitamin D for healthy skin and bones (骨头) ,but don’t forget to use sun cream. Without sun cream you have a bigger risk of skin cancer.

(4) You only need a little sun cream. Too much sun cream is bad for your skin.

WRONG You need to use a lot of sun cream. The sun dries out your skin. Sun cream moisturi-zes (滋润) and protects it.

(9) You need to spend a lot of money to get a good sun cream.

WRONG There are many different kinds of sun cream. Find the one that is best for you. Expensive ones are not always better than cheap ones. Use a sun cream labelled (标明) SPF30+ and it should give you the same protection as one that is more expensive.
