10.A first officer(副机长) and relief pilot(后备飞行员) safely landed a Continental Airlines Inc.jetliner Thursday at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport, hours after the pilot of the Boeing 777died midflight en route from Brussels.
The 60-year-old pilot,a 32-year Continental veteran based in Newark,is believed to have died of natural causes, the airline said. The flight, which had departed at 9:54a.m.local time in Belgium, carried 247passengers,12flight attendants and the three pilots.
People on the plane said the captain fell ill and a relief pilot took the controls as the airplane was over the North Atlantic and approaching the coast of Canada.
To ensure flight safety in the event a pilot becomes incapacitated (丧失能力),Federal Aviation Administration(联邦航空局) rules require any flight longer than eight hours to carry a relief pilot in addition to the airplane's captain and first officer, who also is trained to command the cockpit(驾驶员座舱).Flights over 12hours are required to carry two relief pilots.
Because events were confined to the cockpit, other passengers had no idea anything serious had happened until the plane touched down in New Jersey at 11:49a.m.,11minutes ahead of schedule.Despite the crew's call for a doctor, several passengers said, there were no other unusual signs until the plane was met by firetrucks and other emergency vehicles when it landed.
"We thought there was some sort of emergency drill(应急演练) happening,"said Laura McDermott,a New Jersey citizen traveling with her husband and two children.
Some passengers said they were relieved the crew didn't mention the pilot's death while in the air."It was probably better that way,"said Susan Morgan,a passenger from Houston."People would have panicked if they had told us."
A good pilot possesses a combination of many qualities:he must have good flying skills and a high degree of proficiency. He should be focused and aware all the time,self-disciplined and consistent in applying good judgment. In the case of Boeing 777accident,passengers were saved due to both responsible relief pilots and the smart aviation rules. That is,whatever risks they are, there are ways to minimize(最小化) the chances by standard regulations and strictly carrying them out.
