Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how.

1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

3) Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don't pass a test, so don't be overly worried.

There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

There are two kinds of physical activity which require special training. The first demands exact careful movements of the muscles. This kind of activity must be strictly controlled because even a slight movement in the wrong direction will lead a mistake. To type quickly, for example, a person needs training; the slightest movement of a finger in the wrong direction may cause a spelling mistake. A dancer who has to dance on the point of her shoes or turn around on one foot must be trained for a long period of time before she can sense her own center and balance herself. You may have seen a girl walking on a rope across an empty space, which, too, requires a lot of practice.

The second kind of physical activity needs greater strength or extra effort. Most of us get tired if we try to run half a mile without stopping, but a specially-trained person can do this without much effort. Three years ago, some scientists carried out experiments, which produced meaningful and unexpected results. They wanted to find out whether a certain amount of physical exercise would injure those suffering from heart problems. They selected some male patients and trained them in continuous bicycle riding. They were surprised to find that the harmful effect of given amount of physical effort was actually less on the hearts of these trained patients than on those of the patients who were not similarly trained. This is important because it shows that regular physical exercise enables us to make better use of the oxygen we breathe in and that this training, in fact, reduces the amount of work our hearts do. Many tasks which are hard for untrained people are not hard at all for trained people.

The first kind of physical activity must be strictly controlled because _________.

A.a mistake in the wrong direction is dangerous to the fingers

B.a wrong movement in a direction will cause no mistakes

C.a movement in the wrong direction will cause a mistake

D.a slight movement of a finger will lead to a mistake

What must a dancer do before she can balance herself?

A.She must dance on the point of her shoes.

B.She must receive long-time training.

C.She must turn around on one foot.

D.She must perform again and again.

The experiments done by some scientists showed that ________.

A.some male patients were asked to ride bicycles regularly in the experiments

B.the physical exercise had more harmful effect on the hearts of the untrained patients

C.the physical exercise was harmless to the male patients with heart trouble

D.the physical exercise could be helpful for the patients to take in more oxygen

What would be the best title for this text?

Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to be met and many decisions to be made; your future begins here.

However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily overwhelmed by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how, I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you.

The following you may find of use about life on campus:

·Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to make new friends and became familiar with the campus, but don’t forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely.

·If you don’t have a “system” for planning your time now (like a day timer a computer data book). get one. Most of all, don’t depend on your memory.

·Don’t miss the guidelines. The restrictions, rules and regulations of all kinds can usually be found in your student’s handbook. Consider them well-balanced food for thought. What dates are important? What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can / can’t you do in your student residence(住处)? Who has the right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate?

·Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of our bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone, TV and the kitchen table. Consider this — you are paying thousands of dollars for your course. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course.

·Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do. Take as much time as you need to explore new ideas. Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good choices.

What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To offer advice on college life.

B.To explain why college life is exciting.

C.To describe the importance of college life.

D.To persuade you to go to college.

According to the passage, why is it exciting to begin college life?

A.Because you will have more freedom at college.

B.Because you will no longer be afraid of the beyond

C.Because you prepare for your future career and life there.

D.Because professors there will provide you with many new ideas.

The underlined word “know-how” refers to _____

A.An understanding of how things are going at college

B.Practical knowledge about how to behave and what to do at college

C.College halls where rules and regulations are presented

D.An environment completely different from the one you’re used to

According to the passage, college students _______.

A.needn’t learn from those who went to college before them

B.spend as much time as possible on social activities

C.should know what they have fight for on campus

D.are supposed to repeat or replace at least one course

Against the supposition than forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.

This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.

“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

46. According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _______.

       A. result in a warming climate

       B. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently

       C. lead to a longer fire season

       D. protect the forests and the environment there

47. The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT _________.

       A. large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere

       B. the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase

       C. snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space

       D. ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun

48. Earlier studies about northern forest fires _________.

       A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate

       B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere

       C. suggest that people should take measures to protect environment

       D. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming

49. The underlined phrase “soak up” in the last paragraph most probably means ________.

       A. released                B. absorbed               C. created                 D. distributed

50. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may __________.

       A. warm the climate as the supposition goes

       B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

       C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice

       D. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

One of the political issues that is heard a lot about in the States lately is campaign(竞选)finance reform(改革). The people who are  36  for reform usually want the  37  to pay for campaigns and/or limit the amount of money that candidates(候选人)and their  38  can spend.

One reason that reform is called for is that it costs so much to  39  for political office. Candidates have to spend a great deal of time and effort  40  money. The incumbents (those already in office) have less time to do chief jobs since they must  41  so many money raising events.

Another  42  is the fear that candidates will be owned or  43  by the “special interest groups” that give money to their campaigns. Sometimes this certainly seems to be the  44 .

On the  45  side are those who say that it doesn’t mean it’s really  46  just because you call something “reform”. They argue that the right to freedom of speech is  47  if the government can limit anyone’s ability to get his or her message out to the people.

If one person or a group of people want to tell the  48  what they think about an issue or candidate, they have to buy  49  on TV, radio, and in newspapers and magazines. They might want to put up advertisements along highways and on websites. All this costs a lot of  50 .

Those against laws that control or limit spending say that you don’t really have freedom of  51  or freedom of the press if you can’t get your message out. They say the government should never be able to control  52  discussions. They believe that this is most important when the voters are about to make  53 .
