Coffee experts are willing to pay large sums of money for high-quality coffee beans. The high-end
beans, such as Kona or Blue Mountain, are known to cost extraordinary sums of money. Then there
is Kopi Lowak (translated as "Civet Coffee"), the world's most expensive coffee, which sells for as
much as US $50 per quarter-pound.
This isn't particularly surprising, because approximately 500 pounds a year of Kopi Lowak make
up the entire world supply. What is surprising is why this particular coffee is so rare. In fact, it's not the
plants that are rare. It's the civet droppings. That's right, the civet droppings-the body waste of the palm
civet. Coffee beans aren't Kopi Lowak until they've been digested(消化) and come out in the body
waste of the palm civet.
Palm civets are tree-dwelling, raccoon-like little animals, native to Southeast Asia and the Indonesian
islands. They also have a love for coffee cherries. According to Kopi Lowak suppliers, palm civets eat
the fruit whole, but only digest the outer fruit, leaving the beans intact(完好无损). While the beans are
not destroyed, they undergo a transformation in the animal's body. A chemical substance in the digestive
system of the palm civet causes some changes to the beans to give them a unique flavor(味道). However,
this is not the only explanation why coffee beans retrieved from civet droppings have a special flavor all
their own. Another possible reason is that palm civets have an unfailing instinct for picking the coffee
cherries at the peak of their ripeness.
Kopi Lowak is reported to have a character in taste unlike any other coffee, complex with caramel
undertones and an earthy flavor. Currently, most of the world's supply of Kopi Lowak is sold in Japan,
though a few US markets are also starting to stock up on Kopi Lowak.

1.What does "This" in the second paragraph refer to?

A. Civet Coffee.
B. Blue Mountain coffee.
C. The high price of Kopi Lowak.
D. The unique taste of Kona.

2.Why is Kopi Lowak expensive?

A. There is a very limited supply of the beans.
B. The coffee trees that grow the beans are scarce.
C. It takes a long time for the coffee beans to ripen.
D. Only a few experts know how to produce the beans.

3.What is the main point discussed in the third paragraph?

A. Why palm civets like the coffee beans.
B. Where Kopi Lowak is mainly harvested.
C. What chemicals are found in the civet's digestive system.
D. How palm civets change coffee fruit to Kopi Lowak beans.

4.Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage?

A. Little palm civets eat only the outer layer of the coffee cherries.
B. Palm civets somehow know the right time when the coffee fruit ripens.
C. Kopi Lowak is most popular in Southeast Asia and the Indonesian islands.
D. Kona and Blue Mountain are the most expensive coffees but only of average quality.

It's safe, it's simple, and it works: Drinking right amounts of water can really help you lose weight, new
research shows.
In what researchers claim is the firstever trial of the effect of water consumption on weight loss,
scientists from Virginia Tech found that dieters who started each meal with two glasses of water lost nearly five pounds more, on average, than dieters who did not, over the course of 12 weeks. There's no shortage of clear evidence about how water might work to control your appetite (食欲). It ____________ so you don't eat so much; it keeps down your thirst so that you don't turn to calorierich sodas or juices. But until
now, the researchers say, there has been no true evidence that water's appetitecontrolling benefits ever
translate into actual weight loss. Now there is. In the 12week study period, dieters instructed to drink
water with every meal lost an average of 15.5 pounds; dieters given no instructions lost, on average, just
11 pounds.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about the finding is how little we still know about healthy water
consumption in general. In fact, although doctors and public health authorities regularly remind us to drink more water, very few studies give any insight into what our ideal quantity may be.
The new results today suggest that many people could indeed stand to drink a little more water than
they do. But if you're looking to lose weight, be aware that it is actually possible to drink too much water,
and you probably won't help matters any by drinking too much water at a time. In extreme cases, it can
even be deadly. A couple of glasses with each meal, however, should be no problem at all for a healthy
person.

    1. I love bridges! Walking across a large river, a busy road or over a railway line is very exciting for me.
Sometimes, if the bridge is very high, I feel like I'm flying. If the bridge is very long, I think there may be a
problem arriving at the other side. If the bridge is very narrow, I think it may break! When I travel I like to
cross bridges. In the USA I crossed the Golden Gate, in Australia I crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and
when I was in Thailand I crossed the Friendship Bridge to Laos.
    2. Luckily I live in London and there are many bridges here. I live near Chelsea Bridge. So you can imagine
how excited I was to hear that there was a new bridge to celebrate the millennium (太平盛世). A new bridge
in London! The first new pedestrian bridge! A bridge just for people, so no cars, trains or pollution.
(Excitement about a new bridge) Every weekend I went to see the building of the bridge. It was great
to see it changing and growing. Then at last it was finished and it looked beautiful. It runs from St Paul's
Cathedral to Southwark, it is long and wide.
     3. I was really happy that day the bridge opened. I went with my friend Janice and we waited with all the
other people who wanted to cross the bridge too. Everyone was very happy and talking about the bridge. The
mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said:"It will be so good to actually walk across the river peacefully,
without cars and trains thundering by."
     4. Then, at last, we walked across the bridge! We walked slowly and looked down at the river below. I
was very excited. Then I could feel the bridge move a little. It moved to the left and then it moved to the right.
Then it moved again to the left and to the right again. I wasn't excited now, I was a little afraid. The other
people stopped talking and looked at each other. The bridge was swinging to the left and right! I was very
happy to arrive at the other side of the river without a problem.
     5. The next day the bridge was closed and it had a new name: not the Millennium Bridge but the Wobbly
(摇摆) Bridge! The architect said there was not a problem: the bridge is designed to move. So the bridge was
reopened again later. It is now my favorite bridge in London and I try and cross it as many times as possible.
A. The building of the new bridge
B. Moving bridge finally won my love
C. Opening of the new bridge
D. Special feeling about brdges
E. Everybody loved the bridge
F. Walking across the new bridge

The seventh game of any playoff series is always special, win or lose.It always has an edgeofyourseat,
heartinyourthroat intensity unlike any others. One play, one shot or one save may make all the difference.
But there are other things that make our games and sports so special.
For example, where we play our sports is often one of the best things about the games.Think of it:
What is as perfect as a fresh sheet of ice after the Zamboni machine (赞博尼磨冰机)has made its final
pass and left the surface as smooth as glass? Or a swimming pool on a summer morning, clear and calm,
before the first swimmer has broken the water?
To me a freshly mowed and lined soccer field is as beautiful as any painting. So is a golf course in the
early morning, or in the evening when the sun is setting.
The stuff we play with is wonderful, too.Is there anything that feels as good in your hand as a brandnew baseball? Or a nice leather football? Grab hold of either, and you just have to play a game of catch.
The clothes are good too.Sports uniforms are much more colorful and comfortable than regular clothes.Maybe that's why so many kids stay in their sports uniforms long after their games are over.
No shoes feel better on my feet than my golf shoes.Maybe that's because I know I am going to have
fun whenever I put them on.
We talk so much about winning in sports. But if you are the kind of kid who is happy only when their
team wins, then sports will let you down. After all, no team or player wins all the time.
But if you can learn to enjoy the parts of sports that have nothing to do with winning or losing-the feel
of a favorite bat or a stick in your hand, or how your heart beats when you put on your uniform and run
onto the field-then sports will always be fun, whether you win or lose.

British police have begun a year-long programme of Olympic security tests, conducting sweeping

The exercises described are part of a broad range of tests to check how the police, government
departments and emergency services would respond to any problems with the Games.
British police have been conducting security sweeps inside the Olympic Stadium in London as part
of an anti-terror exercise ahead of next year's games. Officers have been searching sections of the
stadium by hand, while sniffer dogs have been employed to search seats for traces of explosives.
The Metropolitan Police's national security coordinator for the London Olympics, Assistant
Commissioner Chris Allison, refused to remark on Tuesday over whether the death of Osama bin
Laden had produced intelligence to suggest that the Games were being targeted by Al-Qaeda(基地

Chris Allison said, "Clearly I'm not going to go into any details of any intelligence, but put it this way,
we have planned all of our Olympic plans on the basis of a severe threat from terrorism. We've looked
at the various attack methods used by terrorists across the world, and put in place the necessary control
measures here to make sure the terrorists couldn't be successful."

How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write
but have never yet found the time? Far too many.
This is Life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many
of its best moments.
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families always making ourselves believe that
this style of life is merely a temporary state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then,
at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and
realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English:"Have a nice day". They speak slowly
and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in
fact, to enjoy the moment: to value this very day.
How often do we say to ourselves, "I'll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a
higher position," only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter I knew a man who gave up a very well paid respectable job at the
Daily Telegraph to go and edit a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what
appeared to me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back
on
Fleet Street in central London for a small local area? I wanted to know.
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under
continual pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on
Southern Region trains.

A. we always try to find some time to write a book
B. we always make plans but seldom accomplish them

2. The underlined phrase "turn his back on" (paragraph 6) most probably means
