The inhalation (吸入) of asbestos particles is associated with a number of lung diseases, such as asbestosis and 1 cancer.
Asbestosis is caused by the entry of asbestos particles into the wall of the alveoli, causing scarring which limits the functioning of the lungs. The lung 2 its elasticity and may change shape. The initial symptoms of asbestosis are a tightness in the chest and breathlessness. In its 3 stages, sufferers develop the barrel-shaped chests associated with emphysema, cyanosis, (where the skin takes a bluish 4 ) and club fingers.
Lung cancer, the generic 5 for malignant tumors(肿瘤)of the alveoli and bronchial tubes, has been shown to be directly 6 to the inhalation of asbestos particles. As in the case of asbestosis, there is generally a period of inactiveness which may 7 from 25 to 30 years after initial exposure, despite the 8of further exposure. Research suggests that there is a direct correlation between the degree of exposure to asbestos 9the incidence of lung cancer. Where exposure occurs, the level of risk is further 10 by cigarette smoking. Asbestos workers who smoke cigarettes have a 90% greater risk of catching lung cancer than workers who do not 11.
Exposure to blue asbestos has been shown to producemesothelioma, a rare cancer of the outer lining of the lung or pleura. In a normal population the incidence of mesothelioma is extremely 12. Where epidemiological surveys have revealed a higher incidence of the disease, it is almost always related to 13 exposure.
14 changes in lung tissue caused by exposure to asbestos are pleural plaques and effusions. The former refer to a thickening of the lining of the chest wall, 15 the latter consists of a collection of fluid in the chest region outside the lungs. Pleural plaques commonly remain undiagnosed and generally have no detrimental effect on health.

On the IraqSyria border,a pack of wild dogs circled American soldiers for food. The leader of the pack was a grayandwhite dog.The soldiers called him Nubs.Nubs was shaking and1 able to stand.Marine major Brian Dennis looked closer and saw that there was a knife wound2 his chest.
Dennis couldn’t stand seeing the dog3.He and his men immediately treated the wound, and gave Nubs medicine.Nubs4but was still in pain. The next day,the team had to5.Ten days later,Dennis’s unit was back, and so was Nubs.He was still6,but the men fed him and played with him.
Before long the unit once again7an outpost (前哨) 70 miles away.Nubs, slowly but determinedly,8them far into the trackless wasteland until the men lost9of him.Two days later, beyond Dennis’s10,he saw Nubs just outside the outpost. The dog had tracked him across 70 miles of frozen desert to11with the friend who had saved his life. From then on Nubs and the men slept in the same place, and ran around in the same ruins.
Until an order came down from above that they were not12to have pets,Dennis13to make sure the dog would continue to live the14life.So he quickly raised $4,000 from his family and friends to fly Nubs to15.
A month later, when Dennis and the dog were16in California,at first Nubs didn’t recognize the guy.17within minutes, the dog jumped into Dennis’s arms, jumping up again and again to18 his friend’s face.
A little19and concern in the middle of war will not save a violent world. But small stories, like the story of a soldier and a dog, hold a promise of a(n)20world.

Ban the Band(乐队)?
Every year, our school has a dance for all the students. It’s a little funny seeing friends in clean shoes and trousers or colorful1,instead of the usual school uniform.
Most of us think the dance is great2—even the teachers enjoy being there.3,two weeks ago someone said that there would be no4band this year—only CDs.
“I don’t5it!”Amy cried out during the lunch break.
“Someone said the school couldn’t 6la band, and they think it’s too noisy anyway,”added Daniel.
“Well,I don’t think it’s7enough without a band!”declared Angela,“and I’m going to see what can be done.”
Angela was as good as her8.In the afternoon she went to see the school headmaster who agreed to give the9some more thought. And he suggested that one10for having a band was to increase the price of each ticket from $5 to $10.Angela had to11out whether the students would like to do that.
“I need all of you to help me,”she 12to our group before school the next day.“Mr.Berry gave me a list of all the names, and suggested we ask each one their13about the band and the extra cost.”
14the day we asked around as Angela suggested, and wrote down people’s feelings about the band and the cost.We were amazed how much15there was for the band and everyone agreed to pay the extra $5.
“I’m surprised,”smiled Mr. Berry, when we gave him the16.“I really thought that only a few people17their band and that the cost would be too high.OK,Angela, your next18is to find a good band and line them up for the dance.”
Angela was all smiles and19the news to Amy and Daniel.“You’re20,”smiled Daniel to Angela as he thought how close they came to having a less than perfect dance.

Some years ago when I was in my first year in college, I heard Salome Bey sing for the first time. The moment was exciting. Salome’s 1filled the room and brought the theater to life. I was so 2 that I decided to write an article about her.
I 3 Salome Bey, telling her I was from Essence magazine, and that I wanted to meet her to talk about her career. She 4 and told me to come to her studio next Tuesday. When I hung up, I was scared out of my mind. I 5 I was lying. I was not a writer at all and hadn’t even written a grocery list.
I interviewed Salome Bey the next Tuesday. I sat there 6, taking notes and asking questions that all began with, “Can you tell me…” I soon realized that 7 Salome Bey was one thing, but writing a story for a national magazine was just impossible. The 8 was almost unbearable. I struggled for days 9 draft after draft. Finally I put my manuscript (手稿) into a large envelope and dropped it into a mailbox.
It didn’t take long. My manuscript 10. How stupid of me! I thought. How could I 11 in a world of professional writers? Knowing I couldn’t 12 the rejection letter, I threw the unopened envelope into a drawer.
Five years later, I was moving to California. While 13 my apartment, I came across the unopened envelope. This time I opened it and read the editor’s letter in 14:
Ms Profit,
Your story on Salome Bey is fantastic. Yet we need some 15 materials. Please add those and return the article immediately. We would like to 16 your story soon.
Shocked, it took me a long time to 17. Fear of rejection cost me ly. I lost at least five hundred dollars and having my article appear in a major magazine. More importantly, I lost years of 18 writing. Today, I have become a full – time writer. Looking back on this 19, I learned a very important lesson: You can’t 20 to doubt yourself.

Who knows6the five of us clumped together more than7of us clumped with other mothers. I suppose it happens8,friendship circles spiraling in and around and about and anew.?
This is the9time we've gathered without the kids, and I am having a10time saying “Janice”, as opposed to “Zoe's mom” or “Susan”,11“Kaitlin's mom”, and so I have decided, for tonight, not to12any names at all.?

There is so much17to take care of when you are just getting to18people as people. One of the things we are doing is19dates, the years that each of us20from this or that. I see where this is going.?

I changed them until I was pleased. 9,everything was underway. Now I had to wait. In March, I started receiving letters of rejections(拒绝),I began to think that I had set myself up for10 .I had a letter from Salem State College stating that they wanted to see my third quarter 11 before they made their decision .Yes !At least someone wanted to 12 me. The beginning of April, I received a letter from Keens State.I had been rejected. Those 13words :“We regret to inform you...”made me sit down and cry.
