The head of General Motors，Roger Smith，has not said how much the Impact might cost，but he says it would have to be competitive with other car prices．Mr Smith also says a few problems still remain．For example，the cost of operating the Impact today would be about twice that of other cars．Reports say the new electric car has raised hopes among environmental officials，especially in California．American car makers are hurrying to meet new air pollution laws in that state．General Motors says California would be the main market for the Impact．But the company says it would not produce the car at all unless people all over the United States wanted to buy it．Some company officials say the car could be in production within five years．
