Vitamin E supplements(补充品),which millions take in the hope of longer, healthier lives, may do more harm than good, researchers reported on Wednesday.?
In fact, people taking high doses(剂量)of vitamin E may in some cases be more likely to die earlier, although the reasons are not clear, said Dr. Edgar Miller of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who led the study.“I think people take vitamin E because they think it is going to make you live longer, but this(study)doesn’t support that.”Miller told reporters.?
Miller and colleagues re?analyzed 19 studies of vitamin E and health between 1993 and 2004. The tests involved more than 136,000 mostly elderly patients in North America, Europe and China. People who took 200 international units of vitamin E a day or more died at a higher rate during the study, which lasted three years, than people who did not take supplements, they told a meeting of the American Heart Association.“It’s about a 5 percent increased risk at 45 years in the tests combined together,”Miller said.“That doesn’t sound like a lot but if you apply it to 25 percent of the (U.S.)adult population taking vitamin E, that is significant.”?
Miller, whose findings are also being published online by the Annals of Internal Medicine, said two?thirds of people who take vitamin E supplements take 400 IU or more.“We don’t think that people need to take vitamin E supplements, which they can get enough from the diet,”he said. Nuts, oils, whole grains and green leafy vegetables are all rich in vitamin E.?

1.根据第一段的“Vitamin E supplements, which millions take in the hope of longer, healtheir lives, may do more harm than good”可以得知答案。
2.以最后一段的“We don’t think that people need to take vitamin E supplements, which they can get enough from the diet”作为依据可以推出C项不正确,所以答案是C项。
3.从最后一段的“Nuts, oils, whole grains and green leafy vegetables are all rich in vitamin E”中可以找到答案,前三项都有提及,因此答案是D项。
4.文章内容是围绕一项研究人们服用维E补充品的结果展开的,而且研究表明人们服用过多会减短他们的寿命。综合四项只有A项最全面最完整,因此答案为A项。
Teenagers who do not get enough of the nutrients commonly found in fruits and fish are easier to have bad lungs, coughing and wheezing (喘息).Teens who eat the least of fruit and especially vitamin C have weaker lungs compared to the others.
Teens who take in less vitamin E, found in vegetable oil and nuts, are more likely to have asthma(哮喘), Jane Bums at the Harvard School of Public Health found.
Based on these findings.Bums said that current recommended dose(一剂)of vitamin C, 85 mg a day, may not be enough for teens to have healthy lungs.Teens who eat less fruit and don't take in enough fatty acids (脂肪酸) are more likely to have asthma and the signs of breathing difficulty.
Proper amounts of fatty acids are protective, Bums said, though fish, the best source of fatty acids, is particularly unpopular with teenagers.Fatty acids are also found in some nuts as well as some green vegetables'.Smokers who avoid vitamin C will increase their chances of coughing, wheezing and developing phlegm(痰).
More than 80 percent of teens are getting their recommended doses of vitamin C - mainly from fruit drinks."I wouldn't approve of drinking them, but at least they're getting their vitamin C from somewhere," Burns said.
Burns added that there are several different ways to get the necessary nutrients."I think vitamin supplements are fine.I think adding vitamin D to orange juice is fine. But I do think there are added benefits that we don't fully understand of eating whole foods like fruits and vegetables and fish," she said. The researchers did not account for poverty and other factors that often distinguish less-healthy eaters and may explain their findings.

Now, we know that if we do not get enough vitamins, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. As a result, vitamin supplements(补品),though expensive, are popular with people who worry that they are not getting enough vitamins from the foods they eat. But contrary to what many people think, medical experts have found little evidence that most supplements do anything to improve health or protect against disease.
In fact, medical experts warn that taking too many of some vitamins can be harmful. For example, too much vitamin E can cause bleeding. People should discuss what vitamins they take with their doctors, as some vitamins can produce harmful side effects when mixed with medicines.
Experts, however, do say that sometimes vitamins can help prevent disease. People who know they lack a particular vitamin should take vitamin supplements. Some older adults, for example, may not have enough vitamin B-twelve. This is because, as people get older, their body loses its ability to take it from foods. Also, people who spend much time inside may need some extra vitamin D as the skin makes this vitamin from sunlight.
Different vitamins are found in different foods. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It also is in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A. Vitamin B-twelve is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like fruits. Vitamin K can be found in pork products.
In fact, for most people, a balanced diet can ensure enough of the vitamins our bodies need. So, it is important for us to eat a mixture of foods every day to ensure that we get enough vitamins our bodies need.
