BEIJING --Seven prestigious universities in China announced Sunday that they would begin using the
same independent exam -- besides the national one -- to test students hoping to gain entrance to them in
2011.
The seven are Peking University, Beihang University, Beijing Normal University, Nankai University,
Fudan University, Xiamen University and Hong Kong University.
Students who want to gain entrance to any of the seven universities will only have to sit one independent
exam, according to the joint announcement.
"This will help lighten tile students' load, otherwise they must take several exams for different universities," said the announcement.
Passing the exam could result in more than one interview chance, giving the students more opportunities to choose their favorite universities.
China's college entrance exam system is undergoing reform as universities aim to select students based
on independent criteria rather than just using the results of the national exam.
In 2003, Peking University and another 21 universities were allowed to pilot (试用) the reform by
using their own criteria to independently select five percent of their students.
Now nearly 80 universities across the country have the right to select talented students based on their
own exams.
Education experts regard universities selecting students according to independent examinations as
conducive (有助的) to better understanding where the students' talents lie.
Although this may be the case, it has also created problems as students may sit many different exams
as they often apply for a number of universities.
To relieve students from such pressures, the national education outline (2010--2020) released in July
this year encourages high-level universities to group together to use the same exams.

1. If students want to be admitted to the seven prestigious universities , they can ______.
A. only pass the interview.B. only take the national exam.
C. only take the independent exam.
D. either take the national exam or the take the independent exam.

A. It can reduce students' load to take several exams.
B. The universities will have the same standard to test students.
C. There will be less trouble marking students' test papers.
D. It can avoid fierce competition among these universities.

3. If students pass the independent exam , they will ______.
A. take the national exam.B. have one or more interview chances.
C. be admitted to one of the universities.
D. he trained to be adapted to universities life and studies.

4. What is the advantage of universities selecting students according to independent examinations?
A. Students needn't take the national exam.B. Students' education cost can be lowered.

Cyber language is popular among Chinese netizens, who create English words to reflect novel
phenomenon in society.
"Geilivable", combining pinyin of Chinese characters Geili (giving strength) with the English suffix
for adjectives, literally means "giving power" or "cool". Similarly, "hengeilivable" means "very cool",
and "ungeilivable" means "dull, not cool at all". "Antizen" refers to the group of college graduates who,
earning a small salary and living in small rented apartments, are like the tiny and laborious ants.
David Tool, a professor with the Beijing International Studies University said it's very interesting to
combine Chinese with English to create new words. "English is no longer mysterious to the Chinese
people. They can use the language in a flexible way according to their own experiences," he said. Chinese
words and expressions were created, as well, by netizens. One example was "Suan Ni Hen". This three-
character expression, which originally meant "you win" with the first character carrying the same
pronunciation as garlic in Chinese, is used to satirize (讽刺) high garlic and food prices this winter.
Chinese people use the character "bei" before a verb to show a passive voice, and it is used by netizens
to show the helplessness in front of false conclusions and fake media reports. For instance, "zisha" means
"suicide" while "beizisha" means "be officially presumed to have committed suicide", and "xiaokang" means
"fairly comfortable life" while "beixiaokang" means "be said to be living a fairly comfortable life".
Wu Zhongmin, a professor at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of
China, saw the phenomenon of word creation as a natural response of young people to social issues. "Cyber
language is more vivid and it shortens people's distances," he said.
1. The passage mainly tells us that _____.
A. cyber language is popular among all people
B. cyber language is of great fun
C. cyber language needs to be taught at college
D. cyber language in China is popular for it's relation with society
2. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Ungeilivable means "dull, not cool at all".
B. Antizens live in small rented apartments with small salaries.
C. Suan Ni Hen refers to the highest food prices ever.
D. Beixiaokang means "be said" to be living a comfortable life.
3. What can we infer from the phenomenon of word creation?
A. It's getting more difficult to understand cyber language.
B. Young people are more likely to respond to nature.
C. Social phenomena are more easily reflected in cyber language.
D. The best way to create new cyber words is to combine Chinese and English.
4. Chinese netizens created English words by _____.
A. combining pinyin of Chinese characters with the English suffix
B. using the character carrying the same pronunciation
C. combining Chinese characters with the English
D. putting the character"bei" before an English word

More Chinese are seeking out the surgeon's knife to improve their looks. Yet the tragic death of the
former Super Girl Wang Bei has made people aware of the risks of cosmetic surgery, which is becoming
increasingly popular.  Wang Bei,24,is said to have gone under the knife in Wuhan, to jump-start her
stage-show career. It seems that the ambitious singer has finally achieved the fame and influence after her
death.
For years Miss Lu expected a plastic surgery to make her jaw fashionable narrow and her face smaller. She finally decided against it after hearing of the death of Wang Bei. "Wang Bei's death rang the warning
bell for me,"Miss Lu said in her blog." It was frightening and I gave up the plan. "
A common thread of online discussion is why someone considered beautiful was so dissatisfied with
her looks. Some netizens said Wang was a victim of society's impractical standard of beauty:double
eyelids, and the pointed chin typical of Western actresses. Others said her death indicated the limits to

competitive society. People regard appearance as a weapon in life battle. Those who are young and
naturally good-looking tell me,'I don't care how much I spend. Just make me look more beautiful.' "
Advice from a surgeon and psychologist:
1.Choose regular, qualified hospitals with a good reputation.
2.Try to find an expert surgeon who will not suggest several operations over time.
3.Don't expect too much from changing your appearance. Safety should be the first.
