Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican American family. As the only girl in a family
of seven children, she often felt like she had "seven fathers," because her six brothers, as well as her father,
tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated (躲避) into books. Despite her love of reading,
she did not do well in elementary school because she was too shy to participate.
In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her grades and
worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because he thought it
would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a
husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of
Iowa. At the university's Writers' Workshop, however, she felt lonely-a Mexican American from a poor
neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find
her "Creative voice."
"It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice.
I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn't think it had anything to do with why I felt so much imbalance
in my life, but it had everything to do with it! That's when I decided I would write about something my
classmates couldn't write about."
Cisneros published her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book
tells about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the
neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in
classes from high school through graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has published several books
of poetry, a children's book, and a short-story collection.

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we were going home.
On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow."Buy it," my
wife said at once. "We'll carry it home on the roof rack. I've always wanted one like that."
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on the roof rack. It
was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.
In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police
even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, "There's a long line of cars behind. Why don't they overtake, I wonder?" In
fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with
great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One
of the officers came to me.
"Right, sir," he said. "Do you need any more help?"
I was a bit puzzled. "Thanks, officer," I said. "You have been very kind. I live just on the road."
He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. "Well, well," he said, laughing. "It's
a cupboard you've got there! We thought it was something else."
My wife began to laugh. The truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. "Yes, it's
a cupboard, but thanks again." I drove home as fast as I could.
1. In fact the husband _____ the cupboard.
A. would like very much to buy

C. was glad to have bought
D. would rather not buy

A. driving in gathering darkness
B. in great sorrow
C. driving with wild flowers in the car
D. carrying furniture
4. What did the husband think of this matter?
A. It was very strange.

When I was seven, my father gave me a Timex, my first watch. I loved it, wore it for years, and haven't
had another one since it stopped ticking a decade ago. Why? Because I don't need one. I have a mobile phone
and I'm always near someone with an iPod or something like that. All these devices (装置) tell the time-which
is why, if you look around, you'll see lots of empty wrists; sales of watches to young adults have been going
down since 2007.
But while the wise have realized that they don't need them, others-apparently including some distinguished
men of our time-are spending total fortunes on them. Brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Breitling
command shocking prices, up to £250.000 for a piece.
This is ridiculous. Expensive cars go faster than cheap cars. Expensive clothes hang better than cheap
clothes. But these days all watches tell the time as well as all other watches. Expensive watches come with
extra functions-but who needs them? How often do you dive to 300 metres into the sea or need to find your
direction in the area around the South Pole? So why pay that much of five years' school fees for watches
that allow you to do these things?
If justice were done, the Swiss watch industry should have closed down when the Japanese discovered
how to make accurate watches for a five-pound note. Instead the Swiss reinvented the watch, with the aid
of millions of pounds' worth of advertising, as a message about the man wearing it. Rolexes are for those
who spend their weekends climbing icy mountains; a Patek Philippe is for one from a rich or noble family;
a Breitling suggests you like to pilot planes across the world.
Watches are now classified as "investments" (投资). A 1994 Philippe recently sold for nearly £350, 000,
while 1960s Rolexes have gone from 15, 000 to 30, 000 plus in a year. But a watch is not an investment. It's
a toy for self-satisfaction, a matter of fashion. Prices may keep going up-they've been rising for 15 years.
But when fashion moves on, the owner of that? £350, 000 beauty will suddenly find his pride and joy is no
more a good investment than my childhood Times.
1. The sales of watches to young people have fallen because they _____.
A. have other devices to tell the time
B. think watches too expensive
C. prefer to wear an iPod
D. have no sense of time
2. It seems ridiculous to the writer that _____.
A. people dive 300 metres into the sea
B. expensive clothes sell better than cheap ones
C. cheap cars don't run as fast as expensive ones
D. expensive watches with unnecessary functions still sell
3. What can be learnt about Swiss watch industry from the passage?
A. It targets rich people as its potential customers.
B. It's hard for the industry to beat its competitors.
C. It wastes a huge amount of money in advertising.
D. It's easy for the industry to reinvent cheap watches.
4. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Timex or Rolex?
B. My Childhood Timex.
C. Watches? Not for Me!
D. Watches-a Valuable Collection.

It is not unusual at all for teens to answer their parents with one-word answers. "Where are you going?"
"Places." "When will you be back?" "Sometime." "Who will you be with?" "People."
That means that the days of your children bounding in the front door with the details of their day are over.
They are breaking away from you so that they'll be able to stand on their own as a young adult.
Some parents feel sad about this loss of their children's closeness. Of course you miss those conversations
and friendly talks. Once your children move out after high school and establish themselves confidently as a
young adult, they'll come back for easy conversations and even ask for advice. But in order to determine who
they are right now they need to separate from you.
Your job, however, is to keep them safe-and that requires knowing there they are and who they are with.
Let them know clearly that it's not because you want to dominate their life and control them; it's because it's
a safety issue for family members to keep track of one another.
When they're home and sit down to eat a meal, sit down with them. You need to open up to them about
your life. Tell them of an interesting incident at the office, let them in on a bit of family gossip (闲谈), discuss
a piece of news with them. They are glad that you see them as old enough to be in on a few experiences of
your life. By letting a teen in on your life, they just may let you in of theirs.

A. their awareness of independence

As Americans' health and fitness levels continue to decline, many of those in the worst shape are afraid
to go to a "regular" gym to improve their poor health. They somehow feel embarrassed and don't know how
to begin. For these individuals, boutique gyms that specialize in particular parts of population may be good
choices. These special gyms provide a more personal setting tor those returning to a healthy lifestyle or
starting a fitness program for the first time. Personal training and individualized attention are key features
of these new kinds of gyms.
Bulldog Fitness, a gym for kids only, is using the latest trend in video games that provide a workout to
engage their young members. Playstation2 Game Bikes, the Treadwall (a rock climbing wall that moves with
you), and DDR Dance Machines are customers' favorites.
Meanwhile, Irene Pastore of Senior Fit in New York city shows that "age is no excuse for ill-health." Her
boutique gym focuses on the health risks associated with sedentary living. Personal training programs are
designed specifically for seniors depending on their special needs.
"We feel that people that need the most guidance often don't know where to turn. If America is going to
change its current health decline, the public and healthcare industry needs to pay more attention to the unique
needs of customers," says Dr. Sal Arria, CEO and founder of the International Sports Science Association
