Dear Jack,

I¡¯m sorry to hear that you feel lonely in the new school, because you find hard to make friends. Now, I¡¯d like to offer you any advice.

Firstly, it¡¯s normal for you to feel lonely because you were living in a new environment. Secondly, you should greet your classmates when met them on campus. Thirdly, it will be a good idea if you take an actively part in class activities, what can help them learn more about you. I believe you will be able to make new friends soon unless you¡¯re friendly to the others.

I hope the suggestion above will be helpful to you and everything will be fine with you for the future.

Yours,

Li Hua

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Bees play a vital role in the world. Unfortunately, bees are dying by the second.

The main purpose of bees is to make honey. Honey, shockingly, does not exist for human consumption, it is essential to the insects. Honeybees store honey in their hives (·ä³²) in order for the bees to have energy for their flight muscles and for heating the hive during the winter period. They collect pollen (»¨·Û) which supplies protein for young bees to grow.

According to Honey, com, the increased production and quality of agricultural crops as a result of honey bee pollination is valued &t more than1 $14/ 6 billion per year. These insects are responsible for over 70 of the fruits and vegetables we eat today, including apples, grapes, coffee, beans, and broccoli.

So if they are so valuable to agriculture, why do they keep dying off? A key suspect seems to be pesticides (Å©Ò©). Honeybees who are exposed to pesticides result in the damage to their neurological (Éñ¾µÄ) functions, specifically memory or behavior. And that's why the majority of worker bees disappear and leave behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees to care for the remaining immature bees and the queen. There are several other causes to the decline of bees, including the destruction of natural habitat, like woodlands, forests, and other habitats for bees. Climate change is also a factor in the decline of the wild bee population.

Actually, there are a variety of methods to help the bee population grow. One way is to start your own organic garden by planting bee-friendly plants. Pesticides are used in both industrial practices and even in your home, so it is best to find organic seeds and weed killers.

¡¾1¡¿Why do honeybees store honey in their hives?

A. To provide enough honey for human to consume.

B. To draw protein out of honey for young bees.

C. To help attract other insects and make hives stronger.

D. To strengthen bee muscles and heat hives in winter.

¡¾2¡¿Apples and beans are mentioned in the third paragraph to show that _.

A. bees supply human beings with basic food

B. bees mainly live on these agricultural crops

C. bees are of great importance to fruits and vegetables

D. bees can bring in more money for famers every year

¡¾3¡¿What is most likely to cause the worker bees to leave their hives behind?

A. The lack of food.

B. The abuse of pesticides.

C. The fighting among bees.

D. The destruction of the habitats.

¡¾4¡¿What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

A. Another way to save bees.

B. Other tips for choosing seeds.

C. More methods to plant green organic fruits.

D. Causes of the decline in the wild bee population.

Holiday gift buying can feel a little empty, when all of those endless lists, long lines at the shopping center and dollars spent lead to a 5-minute excitement of flying wrapping paper. The following tips can help make gift giving more meaningful for both the giver and the receiver.
1 Know the person
The most important thing in the exchanging of gifts is that it shows that you really know the person well, and you really care about him.
2 Donate in their name
Research suggests that happier people give more to others, and that giving more makes people happier. Moreover, charity-related happiness is highest when people give in a way that promotes social connection. So, try giving to the less fortunate in someone's name this holiday season.
3 Give handmade goods or hand-me-downs
A study suggests that people feel that homemade items show more love, and love is what they want to express to the gift receiver.
Family heirlooms(´«¼Ò±¦) may be another good gift option. A 2009 study found that when families hand down even a very depersonalized thing ¡ª money ¡ª to the generations, the symbolic value of the cash is greater than the numerical value alone.
4 Provide chances for participation
If there's a golden rule of gifts, though, it's this: People who receive experiential gifts, such as concert tickets or a zoo membership, feel more connected to the gift giver than people who received material gifts.
A. Give experiences rather than objects.
B. But it doesn't have to be that way.
C. Giving gifts to friends or to charity is linked to happiness.
D. That is always beyond their expectation.
E. That means catering to another¡¯s pleasure.
F. Start listing every person you plan to give a holiday gift to.
G. The new and store-bought is not always best.

Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth. There are hundreds of kinds of sharks. Most are about two meters long. The dogfish shark, however, is less than twenty centimeters in length. A shark has an extremely good sense of smell. It can find small amounts of substances in water, such as blood, body liquids and chemicals produced by animals. Sharks eat fish, other sharks, and plants that live in the ocean.
Sharks grow slowly. About forty percent of all sharks lay eggs. Some sharks carry their young inside their bodies as humans do. Some sharks are not able to reproduce until they are twenty years old£®Most reproduce only every two years. And they give birth to fewer than ten young sharks. For this reason, over-fishing of sharks is of special danger to the future of the animal.
Sharks are important for the world's oceans. They eat injured and diseased fish. Their hunting activities mean that the numbers of other fish in ocean waters do not become too great.
People hunt sharks for sport, food, medicine and their skin. Experts say the international market for some kinds of sharks has increased because many parts of a shark are valuable. Collectors pay thousands of dollars for the jaws of a shark. The skin of a shark can be used like leather. In Asia, people enjoy a kind of soup made from shark fins. Experts say a fisherman can earn a lot of money for even one kilogram of shark fins. Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth, but some sharks are in danger of disappearing from Earth.
A. Shark liver oil is a popular source of Vitamin A.
B. This protects the plants and other forms of life that exist in the oceans.
C. Sharks are valuable to us and we can make full use of them.
D. These powerful senses help sharks find their food.
E. If too many sharks in one area are killed, that group of sharks may never return to normal population levels.
F. This is a threat to other forms of life in the ocean.
G. The others give birth to live young.

Keeping pace with teachers is a fine way to study English. Teachers are experienced and their plans are systematic. But remember to work in a way that suits you. It's important to learn from past mistakes as well. Keep a notebook to make a record of the mistakes you make£it'll help you avoid making the same ones later.
The time of life may be hard, but you're not alone. You may be busy studying, but you can show your care by calling your friends or sending short messages. Don't let your friendships die.
It's as important to live well as it is to study well. Going to bed no later than 11: 30 pm is vital. It puts you in the right mood for the next day. You needn't follow a special diet, but make sure you are eating nutritious meals each day.
The person who plays well, studies well. Having a lot of schoolwork doesn't mean having to give up other activities. Playing basketball or having a talk with your classmates can relax yourself. Time out is not a waste of time but helps you study more efficiently.
Besides taking the big exam, you have other choices for college. I took the independent enrollment exam held by Peking University and some other students even were preparing to study abroad. Pay attention to any relevant information you can find, whether it's from school, the news media or other sources.

Most cars have seat belts as part of their equipment. Seat belts protect drivers and passengers in case of accidents. They also reduce the effect of a crash on the body.

¡¾1¡¿Worldwide, the devices have protected up to a million people. America first recognized the invention of an automobile seat belt in 1849. The government gave a patent to an engineer named Edward Claghorn of New York City so that others would not copy his invention of a safety device. ¡¾2¡¿This early version of safety belt was said to include hooks and other attachments for securing the person to a fixed object.

Other inventors followed with different versions of the seat belt. ¡¾3¡¿ It resulted from the work of a Swedish engineer, Nils Bohlin. His three-point, lap and shoulder seat belt first appeared on cars in Europe 50 years ago.

Nils Bohlin recognized that both the upper and lower body needed to be held securely in place. His invention contained a cloth strap(´ø×Ó) that was placed across the chest and another strap across his hips(Íβ¿).¡¾4¡¿

Volvo was the first company to offer the modern seat belt to its cars. This company also provided use of Nils Bohlin's design to other car-makers.

¡¾5¡¿He received a gold medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 1995. He died in Sweden in 2002.

A. Claghorn called his invention a safety belt

B. The design joined the straps next to the hip.

C. The Swedish engineer won many honors for his seat belt.

D. Safety experts say that seat belts save thousands of lives a year in America alone.

E. There are many companies adopting Nils Bohlin's invention of the belt.

F. Claghorn was a promising young engineer with many honors all his life.

G. But more than 100 years passed before the current seat belt was developed.
