Text 2 W: Have you passed all the six subjects in the mid-term examination? M: Almost. I failed in maths. Text 3 W: I forgot to bring paper and pencil to take notes in class. M: That's all right. I have enough for both of us. Text 4 W: Excuse me, have you got chalk, please? M: I'm afraid not, I'm a student. Why don't you go to the teachers' office? Text 5 M: Lovely day, isn't it? W: Yes, isn't it. In our city we haven't such a day. M: It's a pity. By the way, what part of the world do you come from? W: France. What about you? Text 6 M: Weren't you lucky to meet Jim in London? W: Yes, I was. If I hadn't met him. I would have left Britain much sooner. M: That would have been a pity. The English countryside is so lovely. W: Isn't it? Think of the things I would have missed if he hadn't shown me around. M: Would you have considered hiring a car if Jim hadn't offered to come with you? W: Good heavens know. I thought I'd never be able to drive on the left-hand side on the road. Text 7 M: The plane is leaving in three minutes. W: Yes, it is. M: Excuse me, may I know your nationality? W: I'm from the States. You're Chinese, I guess. M: Yes, you are right. W: Are you going to Romania? I mean, what's your destination? M: I'm on my way to London. Where are you going? W: Same here. But why don't you fly straight to London? M: It's cheaper this way for both Chinese and Romanian passengers. W: Is that so? That's great. Text 8 M: What a lot of rubbish and waste! I just wonder how people can deal with these things every day. W: Don't worry. There are many ways of dealing with them. The other day, I heard that a big rubbish plant is being built near our town. M: A rubbish plant? To produce rubbish or to deal with rubbish? W: To deal with rubbish, of course. M: How much rubbish, can it deal with each day? W: Maybe 3,000 tons, I'm not sure. M: Our town will become cleaner after the plant is built. W: I hope so. Text 9 M: Now we have five-day classes every week, so we have more spare time than before. W: How do you spend your spare time, Timmy? M: I have interest in playing the violin and I'll continue to practise playing it. W: Do you often take part in a concert? M: Yes, I like to go listening to some music. At present I want very much to learn from others. W: Do you like classical music or pop? M: I like both. How do you spend you spare time then, Lily? W: Playing the piano is my favorite activity. M: Our hobbies are similar to each other. I hope we can often exchanged experience together. W: So do I, but I'm weak in the theory of music. M: Me, too. Would you like to go with me to my uncle? He's a professor of the Institute of Music. W: I'm glad to go with you. I would ask him for his advice. Text 10 When Alex was a child, he lived in his grandmother's home. In summer evenings, he would sit in the open air listening to the stories told by his grandmother and his aunts about their family. He learned a lot of about his family history. They talked about things that had happened to the family a very long time ago. They went back and back. It was started with a man called “the African” who was a slave from Africa. He was brought off the ship by a slave owner to work on a farm. He kept trying to run away, but each time he was caught and brought back. The first three times he got a good beating. The fourth time one of his feet was cut off. After that he was sold to another owner for one dollar. On the second owner's farm, he married another slave and had a daughter. When the girl grew up, he told her things about himself how he was caught while he was cutting wood in the forest not far from his village, and how he was shipped here and sold. He told his daughter not to forget that they were African. |
