We have just been talking about African's New Paints, so it is not surprising that you got the wrong title. Text 2 W:What are the requirements for the course? M:There'll be a quiz every Monday and a final exam. Also, you're required to go to the language lab two hours each week. Text 3 W:You can change planes in either Chicago or Denver. M:You mean there's no direct flight from New York to Phoenix? Text 4 M:Professor Atkinson, can I see you after this class? W:I'm due at a meeting then-how about the same time on Friday? Text 5 M:Now, this one shows the view right out of my hotel room. W:Wow-it looks just like a postcard! Text 6 W:When did you start smoking? M:Well, I started when I was, er, about sixteen, and I really started because I… well, I think my family smoked and that really made me want to, er… really, somehow it was like growing up. W:Yeah. M:And, of course, my friends around me were smoking. I do remember when I first started that I didn't really draw cigarettes at all because I didn't really know how-to do it and I didn't think it was very pleasant; and it's only as time goes by you get more and more used to that until finally you've realized that you, you can't give up. And, in fact, when I first started I used to pretend that I couldn't give up, because it was like being a grown-up. And, of course, by the time it really happens it's too late. Text 7 W:Do you like pop music, Carl? M:Yes, when I'm willing to. Have you got a large collection? W:No, not very many. We've only ever played them at parties. We're jazz fans really. There's a lot of good jazz on the radio at the moment. Do you listen to any of them? M:Sometimes, when I'm not working. W:What are you studying here, anyway, Carl? M:I'm doing a year at the Slade, and I'm also trying to learn some English. W:I don't know about the Slade, but your English is excellent. You must have been very well taught. M:You're joking! W:No, I'm not, honestly. There isn't much we can teach you. I suppose you intend to visit lots of art museums in London. M:Yes, I hope so. The Tate, the National Exhibition, the British Museum and as many others I can go to. W:Well, since you're an art student, you won't have to pay the entrance ticket like the rest of us. M:I don't know anybody paid. W:They didn't use to, but the Government decided recently that we had to pay for our art. Personally, I think it'll cost them. more to collect the money than they'll get back in return. But still, children will get in free as before and the money is supposed to be used to buy new pictures, isn't it? Text 8 M:Is there a problem with learning a language? W:Mmm… my brain… No, I get, um… er… yeah, no I think what it is actually, is that my English language grammar, er, isn't good enough,. and I can talk in the present tense, in French, but, er… I don't know the English tenses well enough to know what it is that I'm trying to do. M:But when you speak English do you think of the grammar? W:No, because it comes naturally. M:But isn't that the way you should learn French, too? W:Probably. Text 9 W:Here it is… Friday night. Do you want to go dancing? M:Well, not really. I'm kind of tired. I had a pretty hard week. But how about going out to listen to some music? W:What kind of music? M:How about a little light jazz? W:Yeah. That sounds nice. M:What about the Club Blue Note? W:I've never heard of it. M:My office manager was there last week. He said the food and music are wonderful. W:Really? What kind of food do they serve? M:Mostly sandwiches and salads. W:Is it expensive? M:He said the prices are very good. So, do you feel like trying it? W:I can't agree more. I'll just get my coat. Text 10 If you ask some people, “How did you learn English so well?” you may get a surprising answer:“In my sleep” These are people who have taken part in one of recent experiments to test learn-while-you-sleep methods. Scientists say that this sleep-study method speeds language learning greatly. In one experiment, ten lessons were broadcast over the radio. Each lesson lasted 12 hours from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The first three hours of English grammar and new words were given with the student awake. At 11 p.m. a light music was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next 3 hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2 a.m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes to review. the lesson. Then soft songs sent him back to rest again while the radio went on. At 5 o'clock the noise woke up his sleep and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before breakfast. |
