Children find meanings in their old family tales.
When Stephen Guyer’s three children were growing up, he told them stories about how his grandfather, a banker,   1  all in the 1930s, but did not lose sight of what he valued most. In one of the darkest times   2  his strong-minded grandfather was nearly  3  , he loaded his family into the car and   4   them to see family members in Canada with a   5  , “there are more important things in life than money”.
The   6  took on a new meaning recently when Mr. Guyer downsized to  7   house from a more expensive and comfortable one. He was  8     that his children, a daughter, 15, and twins, 22, would be upset. To his surprise, they weren’t.  9     , their reaction echoed (共鸣) their great-grandfather’s.What they 10   was how warm the people were in the house and how  11    of their heart was accessible.
Many parents are finding that family stories have surprising power to help children
12   hard times. Storytelling experts say the phenomenon reflects a growing   13    in telling tales, evidenced by a rise in storytelling events and festivals.
A university   14   of 65 families with children aged from 14 to 16 found kids’ ability to 15  parents’ stories was linked to a lower rate of anger and anxiety.
The  16  is telling the stories in a way children can 17   . We’re not talking here about the kind of story that  18  , “ When I was a kid, I walked to school every day uphill both ways, barefoot in the snow.” Instead, we should choose a story suited to the child’s 19 , and make eye contact (接触) to create “a personal experience”. We don’t have to tell children 20   they should take from the story and what the moral is.

But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself.73 we act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to.Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book.74 Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? 75  Let the children learn what all educated people must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, and how to know what they know or do not know.

根据短文内容,从下框的A--F 选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余项。

A.  Children don’t mean to annoy their parents.
B.  Children can’t understand their parents.
C.  Generation gap exists between parents and kids.
D.  Communication can help you become independent.
E.  Parents should understand their children.
F.  Children want to prove parents are responsible.
【小题1】Parents complain that their teenage children don’t listen to them. They don’t like the way their kids are dressed. They can’t appreciate the music their children prefer. They don’t like the stars their children admire.  Of course, teenagers too are puzzled. They wonder why there is always difference between them and their parents. This is what we call generation gap.
【小题2】Some children have always complained that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships. Actually, this happens as a result of misunderstanding because loving the young is the nature of all the parents.
【小题3】Young people often get their parents annoyed with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in idols (偶像)and music, but that is not their desire. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or idols or clothes or hairstyles annoy their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They may think that they are leaders in style and taste.
【小题4】Sometimes you are satisfied if your parents don’t approve of what you do. You may think that they do so for your sake. They tend to bring their children under control just because they want to be responsible for their children. On the contrary, you’ll be sad if they let you do everything in your own way. That will make you think they don’t care about you.
【小题5】If you plan to control your life, you are supposed to communicate with others in a more effective way. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.

A. Practice what you teach

B. Show affection and respect

C. Respect your children’s mother

D. The importance of being a good father

E. Don’t put unreasonable expectations(不合理的期望) on your children

F. Don’t put unreasonable expectations on yourself either

Being A Good Father

61.____________

Research has found that children with emotionally available fathers do much better in school, relate better with teachers and generally have better peer relationships than children whose fathers are more emotionally distant. Children with fathers who are overly critical or dismissing of emotions are more likely to do poorly in school, fight more with friends and suffer poor health.

62. ___________

Children need to be taught right from wrong and will need to see it demonstrated by their father. Let them see you make decisions and explain to them why you came to that resolution. Tell them about life choices that you made in the past and why they did (or didn’t) work out. Teach them that it’s okay to make mistakes… everyone does; that it’s important to learn from your mistakes and try to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.

63. ___________

Mutual respect is very important. Children tend to imitate the way their parents behave and how you treat your child’s mother will influence the way in which the child will view his or her own role when they themselves are married or in a relationship. Try to work as a partnership, be on the same page about how to discipline and reward your child and be consistent.

64. __________

Children can have lots of pressures, from siblings to kids at school to teachers to coaches. Talk to them about their goals in life and help them set achievable ones. Never bring them down by telling them that they are not good enough but always try to boost their self-esteem and be sure to offer praise where it is due. Encourage them to meet their full potential but avoid living vicariously through them by expecting them to achieve what you had achieved or hoped to have achieved.

65. __________

You are a very important part of you child’s development but many other people and things will influence their development and growth. Just as you can’t take credit for all of your child’s strengths you also shouldn’t shoulder the blame for their weaknesses.
