While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr. Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase.

The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever frugal Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits—to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.”

Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.

The fear of rejection is often softened and we can undergo almost any setback or rejection when we know someone loves us regardless of our success or failure.

Human civilization has truly come a long way. From using animals for transport to the super fast automobiles that we have today. From using flint to making fire to using one touch lighters. But there are some things that we will never let go of.Some ancient traditions that have been brought down through the ages are still followed today.

Groundhog Day(土拔鼠节),falls on the 2nd of February every year.It is observed in the United States and Canada. While this day may be a public holiday and a bank holiday,it is not a compulsory holiday declared by the government. But this is not so for all the states.State-wise holidays may vary.

Groundhog Day is celebrated in some parts of the USA and Canada. The largest celebration is held at Punxsutawney,Pennsylvania.People come in scores to visit Punxsutawney Phil. They wait eagerly, camping days in advance,to see the small groundhog appear from his burrow, check for his shadow and either go back in or stay out.People cheer when they hear it is time for winter to end and celebrate by eating sweets and singing and dancing.Today.the Groundhog Day is a widespread tradition and an exciting event.

That’s all. Thank you!

Even when you’re extremely busy, you aren’t using your time with 100% efficiency. There are gaps in everyone’s schedule where they aren’t doing anything important. Even if your schedule has no gaps, there is probably lots of time when you aren’t working as fast or as effectively as you possibly could.

Why aren’t you completely efficient? It’s because time isn’t the limiting factor. If it were the limiting factor, people could work non-stop without breaks or any unproductive distractions (消遣). Instead, people, even those who are highly productive, need to take breaks, occasionally procrastinate (拖延) and slow down on tasks throughout the day.

The real and most important limiting factor for productivity is your energy levels to pay attention. Energy levels limit your productivity because when you’re tired, you can have enough time and still not get everything done. Your attention ability is also limited, because even if there are a million things that need to be done, you can only focus on one or two at a time.

You might not be able to insert another 4-5 hours into your schedule without making some sacrifices(牺牲). But even extremely busy people can add an hour or two into their schedule without cancelling anything. The reason why it’s hard to “find time” isn’t a lack of time. It’s because you don’t have enough energy left to focus on something else that needs to fit into your day.

I first suspected time wasn’t the real problem during an extremely busy period in my life over a year ago. I was extremely busy, but at that time I still exercised regularly. I had daily to-do lists with over twenty items, and I still found time to exercise. However, after a few weeks off, because of illness, I stopped exercising. I was not busy by any standards, in fact, my schedule was very light. Despite this free time, I found it hard to find time to exercise. It seemed to get pushed later and later into my schedule until it was gone. How can I explain this strange experience? I believe you have known it.

1.If someone can’t work with 100% efficiency, the most important limiting factor is ________.

A. a schedule without gaps

C. the limited time

D. the limited energy

A. prove what the real limiting factor is

B. show us how busily he needs to work

4.What is the best title of the passage?

A. Do You Really Lack Time?

B. How Can You Work Efficiently?

C. What Makes Your Energy Limited?

D. When Should You Do Exercise?

It’s never a real problem for us when the weather gets cold. We can put on more clothes, stay next to a fireplace, turn on the air conditioner or simply travel to a warmer city to spend the winter – people have many different ways of dealing with the cold.
But things are not as easy for plants. Unlike humans, plants can’t move to escape the cold or generate heat ( 发热) to keep themselves warm. So how do they manage to survive the freezing winter?
It turns out that plants have their own strategies (策略) too, said a study published on Dec 22 in the journal Nature.
According to researcher Amy Zanne of George Washington University, US, the cold is a big challenge for plants. Their living tissues (活组织) can be damaged when they freeze. “It’s like a plant’s equivalent to frostbite ( 相当于冻疮),” Zanne told Science Daily. Also, the process of freezing and thawing (解冻) can cause air bubbles (气泡) to form in the plant’s water transport system. “If enough of these air bubbles come together as water thaws they can block the flow of water from the roots to the leaves and kill the plant,” she explained.
To live through cold weather, plants have developed three traits (特性) , according to the study. Some plants, such as oak trees(橡树), avoid freezing damage by dropping their leaves before the winter chill sets in – effectively shutting off the flow of water between roots and leaves – and growing new leaves and water transport cells when the warm spring returns.
Other plants, pine trees(松树) for example, protect themselves by narrowing their water transport cells, which makes it easier for cells to travel among air bubbles.
The third strategy is also the most extreme – some plants die on the ground in winter and start growing as new plants from seeds when conditions get warmer.
However, the study also found that these smart strategies were developed very slowly – over millions

of years of evolution ( 进化). This leads scientists to worry that plants may not be able to deal with human-caused climate change, which has only started occurring over the past few decades.
Scientists are hoping that this study can help people find possible ways to save plants from the threat

of climate change.

1.What is the article mainly about?
A. Why plants are not afraid of the winter chill.

B. The ways that plants survive cold weather.
C. Changes in plants’ water transport system in winter.

D. How plants evolve to keep up with climate change.

2. According to the article, if a plant freezes in the winter, ______.
A. it produces more living tissues to stay alive
B. its leaves quickly fall out and its roots begin to die
C. lots of air bubbles form in its water transport system
D. its water transport system could be blocked in the spring

3.What are scientists worried about when it comes to plants according to the article?
A. Plants may not be able to adapt to the increasingly cold climate.
B. Human activities might have a great impact on the pace of plants’ evolution.
C. Plants may not be able to evolve fast enough to adapt to human-caused climate change.
D. The strategies plants develop are not good enough to protect them against cold.
