One bitterly cold day,a snowstorm blew into our area. Needing firewood,I quickly set out with my best friend,Bruce,to look for a tree to cut down. I was glad to have Bruce along with. Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. So it was important to have a friend who could warn me of danger.
When I chose a big tree about 23 meters tall and prepared to cut it down,my best friend suddenly warned me,“Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!”I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided to disregard his warning. I wanted to finish the job quickly and go home. So I began cutting down the tree. When the tree fell, there was no longer any doubt that my friend was right.
The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground. I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood,so I could safely remove the tree. As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head. I was shocked!
After I returned home and told my mother what had happened, she quickly called the power company. The workers from the power company soon arrived on the scene. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had,his face turned pale.
“You should have been killed,” he said.
So why am I still alive? It was my boots that saved my life.
Within two hours, the workers removed the tree. Soon the snowstorm calmed down—but not my mother.
Even though she was glad I wasn’t hurt,my mother was still serious. After all,I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s warning.
Through this experience,I learn it’s important to listen to people who offer a different perspective.  time to listen might actually save a lot of time and trouble. It certainly would have kept me from getting the “shock” of my life.

Most Chinese people these days know what it is like to have an “English teacher”, since almost all pupils study English from their third year. Usually that first English teacher will be a young and lovely lady in primary school. But my first English teacher is no other than my father. Looking back, I can see that, when I was only a little girl, he created an English environment by providing me with flashcards, fun English- language toys and even dolls which can sing English songs! My interest in English had certainly been awakened (唤起) when I began to learn English at school. Just imagine, he went a step further and asked me to learn New Concept English by myself! I was puzzled and even angry. I could not understand why a father could be so strict with his little girl. All the same, he never gave up and he gently insisted that I follow through with his idea. At first, I read stories with tears and I actually hated them because they were too difficult for me. In the end, I came to love the funny stories and, to be honest, my father was always there with a helping hand. I am sure that my English would never have got so far without his support. And that’s why my father is not only my first English teacher but also my lifelong teacher. He is one who awoke my interest, and who gave me much confidence .

The annual marathon in my town usually occured during a heat wave .My job was to  36  behind the runners in an ambulance  37  any of them ended medical attention. The driver and I were in an air ----conditioned ambulance behind approximately one hundred athletes  38  to hear the sharp crack of the starting gun.
"We're supposed to stay behind the  39  runner, so take it slowly, "I said to the driver, Doug, as we began to creep forward.
" Let's  40  hope all the runners are fast ! "he laughed.
As they began to pace themselves, the front runners started to  41  . It was then that my  42  were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a baggy white T ----shirt.
  "Koug, look !"
We knew we were already watching our "last runner". Her feet were turned in, yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and  43  that it seemed impossible for her to be able to walk, let alone run a marathon.
Doug and I watched in  44  as she slowly moved forward. We didn't say a thing. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to  45  some distance. Then we'd slowly move forward a little bit more.
Finally, she was the  46  runner left in sight. Tears streamed down my face as I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with awe, amazement and even reverence(敬意)as she  47 forward with sheer determination through the last miles.
When the  48 line came into sight, trash(垃圾)lay everywhere and the  49  crowds had long gone home.  50  , standing straight and ever so proud waited a man. He was  51  one end of a ribbon of crepe paper tied to a post.  52  slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the paper fluttering behind her.
I do not  53  this woman's name, but that day she became a part of my life ----a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn't about  54  the other runners or winning a trophy(奖品), it was about finishing what she had set out to do, no matter  55  . When I think things are too difficult or too time ----consuming, I get those "I ----just ----can't ----do ----it", I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.
