Sure enough, at that very moment as they looked back, they saw the man bend down to examine something on the pavement. Then he looked all around for some moments. They held their breath. The man bent down again, and prodded(以尖物推或刺)the pavement with his shoe.

Toad, who at the best of times would not have been fast enough escape pursuit, was so tired that he could hardly move at all.As he felt the toe of the man’s shoe touch him, he shuffled(慢吞吞地走)a mere couple of inches towards the road. His friends were all on the safe side of the road and he felt completely abandoned. The man’s shoe started to move towards him again. The next thing he knew, there was a flurry(阵风)of wings above him, followed by a sharp cry of pain.

Then Fox was by his side, “Fast as you can, up my tail,” he whispered.Toad grasped Fox’s thick brush and grasped tightly with his front feet, pulled himself slowly up.Fox did not stop more than a moment.Once he was sure Toad was off the ground, he raced back across the road again, with Toad hanging grimly on behind.

Tawny Owl(]猫头鹰)had stretched out his claws and skimmed(掠过)the man’s head, raking through his hair. The man’s arms flailed(用力挥动)wildly upwards and caught the bird a glancing blow on the back, but Tawny Owl, seeing that Fox and Toad were out of danger, flew steadily upwards in a wide arc(弧)until the man could no longer see him. Then he flew back over the road, and over the railings, landing by the gorse([植] 金雀花)patch. The moment of danger had passed.

Tawny Owl looking through, most of the animals seemed to be silent, and in the dimness(朦胧)he could make out various shapes crowded together around the gorse.

“Thanks, Owl”, he heard Fox whisper.”All safe now.Everyone’s exhausted——no wish to talk at the moment…”he broke off to yawn.”We’re well hidden here…oh, I’m so tired…I think I’m the only one still awake.Toad’s asleep already.”

  “Good night, Fox.”

“Good night, Owl.”He whispered.”See you in the evening.”

Tawny Owl flew slowly away to join the other birds before it grew light. The first stage of the journey was complete.

About a month ago I was present at a solemn occasion--the reading of a will. I can remember one passage that particularly struck me. It ran something 1 this:“And I direct that £500 be 2 to old William B, whom I have wished to help for many years, 3 always put off doing so.”

It was the Voice of Opportunity 4 written by Beyond. But the story doesn't 5 there. When the lawyers came to 6 out the bequest (遗赠), they discovered that old William B had 7 too, and so the 8 deed was lost.

I felt rather 9 about that. It seemed to me a most regrettable 10 that William would not have had his £500 just 11 somebody kept putting 12 giving it to him. And from 13 accounts, William could have done with the 14 . But I'm 15 that there are thousands of kindly little deeds waiting to be 16 today, which are being put off“ 17 later”.

Why doesn’t the unemployment rate ever reach zero? Economists, who generally believe that supply tends to meet demand, have long thought about this question. Even in good times, i.e. not now, there are people who can’t find work. And even in bad times, i.e. now, there are job openings. With over 14 million people out of work and looking for a job, you would think every available job would be filled. But that’s not the case. Not now and not ever.

On Monday, the Nobel Prize committee awarded the prize for economics to the three scholars who have done the most to explain this phenomenon. Two of the winners are Americans, Peter Diamond of MIT and Dale Mortensen of Northwestern. The third winner is Christopher Pissarides, who teaches at the London School of Economics and was born on Cyprus.

Like most of economics, what they have found about why the jobless and ready-employers don’t find each other seems obvious. You have to find out there is job opening you are interested in. Employers need to get resumes (简历). It takes a while for both employers and employees to make the decision that this is what they want. And these guys came up with a frame-work to study the problem of why people stay unemployed longer than they should and what can be done about it.

So what would today’s Nobel Prize winners do to solve the current problem of the unemployed? And does the awarding of the prize contribute to the politicians’ lowering joblessness?

Speaking from his north London home, Pissarides told The Associated Press the announcement came as “a complete surprise” though his work had already helped shape thinking on both sides of the Atlantic.

For example, the New Deal for Young People, a British government policy aimed at getting 18-24-year-olds back on the job market after long periods of unemployment, “is very much based on our work,” he said.

“One of the key things we found is that it is important to make sure that people do not stay unemployed too long so they don’t lose their feel for the labor force,” Pissarides told reporters in London. “The ways of dealing with this need not be expensive training – it could be as simple as providing work experience.”

According to the writer, which is true about finding jobs?

  A. It is always difficult to find a job.

  B. Everyone can find a job in good times.

  C. Contrary to popular belief, it is easier to find a job in bad times.

  D. It is possible to find a job even in times as bad as now.

What is it that leads to their winning the prize?

  A. They have found the reason for unemployment.

  B. They have put forward a set of ideas to deal with unemployment.

  C. They have found out why people don’t want to be employed.

  D. They have long studied the problem of unemployment.

Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

  A. Pissarides thinks his work surprising.

  B. The work of Pissarides has influenced many economists.

  C. Some of the winners’ ideas have been put into practice.

  D. It is probable that unemployed young people in Britain benefit from Pissarides’ work.

According to Pissarides, _________ is effrctive in dealing with unemployment.

  A. spending large sums of money on training

  B. teaching some knowledge of economics

  C. providing work experience

  D. keeping people unemployed for some time
