曾雪梅七岁时,喜欢趴在窗台上,仰面数飞机。飞机跟小鸟似的,翅膀不动地滑过去。时或起一记嘘声,仿佛有人吹口哨。地平线轰然颤动,团起阵阵乌云。曾雪梅觉得像是过年放鞭炮,便拍手欢呼。母亲兜头一掌道:看啥西洋镜,东洋鬼子投炸弹呢。回头捉牢你这种不听话的小囡,扯成两爿,蘸蘸腐乳吃掉。

是年,曾雪梅已开始念书。读至十三岁,校舍被日本人炸坏。曾家弃了房产,逃到法租界,在寺庙院子里搭个滚地龙。曾雪梅叉断续上了四年夜校后辍学,由邻居引荐,到日本人的福助洋行做工。曾雪梅定在门口,不肯进去。邻居反复诘问,她才憋红脸道:日本人,会吃小囡吗?

曾雪梅因为识字多,被派作车间记录员。每月工资三十多元,外加大米、菜油、黄豆各十斤。逾数月,养得颊圆颐润。工头二本松是日本人,夫人千代子,也在车间工作。一次,千代子邀了几个中国女工去她家吃饭。曾雪梅走过南京路时,浑身觳觫.谎称不舒服,让同事们先行,自己坐到街沿上,掏出用来送礼的苹果,边啃边想心事。食罢,核子一扔,返身往回走。

旬余,机修工钟阿宝问:你觉得中国人好,还是日本人好?曾雪梅睃一眼围观的同事,道:我才不上你的老当。

曾雪梅回得家来,说与母亲。母亲道:当然中国人好,有啥不敢讲的。曾雪梅道:我也不晓得。听说中国工头都打人的。日本大班来视察时,还给每人发十块洋钿奖金。母亲嘴唇一抖道:小恩小惠的,就把你收买了。若不是鬼子杀人放火,我们家就不会穷,你就会一直念书。曾雪梅默然一晌,问:那为啥让我去日本工厂做事?”“嘁,赚鬼子的钞票,也是爱国啊。

到月头,发了工资,曾雪梅背回大米和黄豆。母亲借了一座台秤过磅,忽道:好像少脱了。曾雪梅听得口齿有异,抬眼见她嘴巴歪斜,唇角拖下一径涎沫来。妈,怎么了。母亲想伸手去擦,感觉天花板一动,面孔已然贴倒在地。

一日工间休息,千代子问曾雪梅是不是有心事。曾雪梅犹豫了一下,说:我妈跌了跤,半边身子僵掉了。找过郎中,不见好。现在她不肯吃饭,说要早点死掉,帮我们节省钞票。千代子取了六十块钱,让她给母亲找西医,补营养。曾雪梅推却着,收下,回去说与家人。母亲回光返照似的,嗓门铿铿响道:我是个强硬的人,不讨日本人便宜。一口气接不上,眼乌珠翻了白。曾雪梅扑过去,见一滴浊黄的泪水滑过母亲的太阳穴,在鬓边略作停滞,吧嗒滴落于枕上。

曾雪梅把钱还给千代子,自此避开她和二本松。

一年后,曾雪梅结婚。婚后,丈夫建议曾雪梅辞工。犹豫间,日本投降,福助洋行解散。曾雪梅归得家来,专心养胎。忽一日,那位老邻居捎来二本松的信,她才晓得,厂里的日本人,都被关到了提篮桥。她瞒着丈夫,买了六包稻香村鸭肫肝,学千代子的做派,将点心盒子包起来,去提篮桥探监。

登记、盘问、等待。听到喊她名字,已是入暮时分。晃眼见一个灰发女人,穿看空阅的囚服,挪着碎步出来,深鞠一躬,泪水甩在点心盒上。是日临别,千代子送了她一包童装,都是亲手缝制的。她本来以为,自己会在中国生孩子。曾雪梅怕丈夫见怪,留了一件电机纱短褂,其余的送去了典当铺。

三个月后,曾雪梅开始做母亲。她将电机纱短褂给大儿穿,很快短小了,便收起来,转与二儿穿。怀第三胎时,解放军来了。派出所唤了她去,日本人撤离前,把工厂机器运到吴淞口,扔进海里了。你晓不晓得这件事?她说不晓得。又盘问几句,才放她走。

曾雪梅把在弄堂里玩耍的二儿揪回家,闭紧房门,剥了他身上的电机纱短褂,剪成一条条,混着废报纸烧掉。二儿号啕不已,被她甩了一巴掌:日本鬼子良心忒坏,啥人稀罕他们的破烂衣裳。二儿道:你说千代子阿姨蛮好的。”“呸呸,什么千代子万代子,乱话三千。当心日本鬼子把你撕成两爿,蘸蘸腐乳吃掉。二儿嘶了一声,不再说话。
