Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate

Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst.

___¡¾1¡¿___ Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.

¡óTalk things out.

Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. ___¡¾2¡¿___

¡óDon't expect to be best friends.

Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. ___¡¾3¡¿___ And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.

¡óAsk before you take.

This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. ___¡¾4¡¿___ ¡óClean up after yourself.

This should do without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy. ___¡¾5¡¿___ But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.

A. So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.

B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.

C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.D. You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.

E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.

F. Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.

G. Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.

Dear Mandy,

I¡¯m not doing well in my lessons at school, especial in maths. My dad says I must try hard because he wants me go to university. He thinks I¡¯m lazy, but it¡¯s not true. I work really hard, often study late into the night! I¡¯ve tried to talk to my mother, but she always said I have to work as hard like my brother does. My brother doesn¡¯t study very hard, and he always gets excellent grades. It¡¯s not fair!

The only thing I like it is art. My teacher says I¡¯m the best student she¡¯s had for year. When I told my dad£¬all he said was, ¡°You mustn¡¯t waste your time in art. You must focus your mind on your lessons!¡±

I¡¯m feeling quite puzzling as to what to do now. Would you please help me out?

Thanks a lot!

Yours,

Lisa

Maybe you have heard the expression¡ªwhen in Rome, do as the Romans do. So when you want to do business in France, you have to get to know French culture, to make marketing plans, and to run your business by local laws.

__¡¾1¡¿__ The French take great pride in their language, so anyone who does not speak it may run the risk of being disrespected by his French colleagues or business partners. Also, another reason why learning French is important is that it is a great way to show every possible French business partner that you care and respect their country's culture and language.

The first thing you should do when meeting someone new is to shake his hand firmly and always look the person in the eye. In social meeting with friends, kissing is common.

__¡¾2¡¿__ The French will sometimes introduce themselves using their surname first, followed by their first name.

Dress well. __¡¾3¡¿__ Your business clothing is a reflection of your success and social status. Always try to be tasteful and stylish. Women are advised to dress simply but elegantly. Wearing makeup is practised widely by businesswomen.

The French are passionate about food, so lunches are common in doing business in France, which usually consist of an appetizer, a main meal with wine, cheese, dessert and coffee, and normally take up to two hours. __¡¾4¡¿__

Do not begin eating until the host says ¡°bon appetite¡±. Pass dishes to the left, keep wrists above the table and try to eateverything on the plate. __¡¾5¡¿__ This may suggest that you find the food tasteless. If eating in a restaurant, the person who invites always pays.

A£®The French draw information about people based on their appearance.

B£®This is a time for relationship building.

C£®Remember to be as polite as possible.

D£®Language should be the focus of anyone planning to do business in France.

E£®Be careful with adding salt, pepper or sauces to your food.

F£®Use Monsieur or Madame before the surname.

G£®Make an appointment with your business partner in advance.
