Pat O Burke was a poor Irishman with a large family, and one morning, waking up very early from cold and hunger, he decided to go hunting (打猎) in a wood near his home. The wood belonged to Lord Northwood, a rich gentleman. Pat had no right to go there, but in it there were lots of rabbits and birds that were good to eat, and Pat determined to take the risk.

Suddenly he saw the owner, with a group of friends, coming towards him in the wood. There was a look of anger on Lord Northwoods face as he caught sight of the gun in Pats hands. Pats heart sank (下沉) with fear, but he saw there was no hope of escape, so he walked bravely up to them and said to Lord Northwood, “Good morning, sir, and what has brought you out so early this morning?” Lord Northwood, rather surprised, said he and his team were taking a little exercise to get an appetite (食欲) for their breakfast. Then, looking at Pat with doubt, he said, “but why are you out so early in the morning?” “Well, sir” said Pat, “I just came out to see if I could get a breakfast for my appetite.”

Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred (留下创伤) her for life. The child reached up to get a hot bottle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her body.

Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie badly burnt, rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammies body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, doctors performed an operation that took about six hours to control her injuries. Over the next 16 years, Ammie received 12 more operations to repair her body.

When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils said cruel words or simply wouldnt play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she said, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”

She is a member of the Scottish Burned Childrens Club. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridge for the first summer camp. “Ill show them how to get rid of unkind looking from others,” she says.
