In Britain you're allowed to drive a car when you're seventeen. You have to get a special two-year
driving license before you start. When you're learning,  someone with full license always has to be in the
car with you. You don't have to go to a driving school --a friend can teach you. The person with you
isn't allowed to take money for the lesson unless he's got a teacher's license.
Before you're allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in
your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test, you have to drive round for half an hour and
then answer a few questions. If you don't pass the test, you're allowed to take it again a few weeks later
if you want to.  In 1970, a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons!    ,

the age of 100.

cars weren't allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red
flag.

What would life be like if you lived on Mars (火星)? Would you be very thirsty because there is so
little water? Would you have strange neighbors?
We could ask the boy called Davey Martin for answers. His family moved from their nice Earth home
to a place on Mars. "His life must be very exciting!" you may say. But Martin doesn't agree.
There Is Nothing to Do on Mars is a book written by a US writer, Chris Gall. It tells of Martin's
experience on the red planet.
Martin moves around on a flying scooter (踏板车).  He builds a fort (堡垒) and looks for real
Martians with his robot dog, Polaris. He does that every day. "I am bored!" says Martin.
But when Polaris' nose leads to a great discovery, Martin's world changes. He digs a hole and finds
water.  It means there is a real ocean under the ground. Martin becomes a hero.
We may never have the chance to live on Mars, but we are like Martin sometimes. We often
complain, "I am bored!" or "There is nothing to do ! " The book may have a deeper lesson about life.
If you're creative and search carefully, you'll be surprised by what you find!

Clothes are important and necessary to us, but do you know how to choose suitable clothes in a
correct way? Here are some ideas for you.
When you go shopping and want to buy some clothes, you should think about which kind of clothes
you really need and decide how much money you can spend on them. Then look at the labels that are
inside the new clothes.  They tell you how to take care of the clothes.  The label for a shirt may tell you
to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash it in cold water.  The label on a coat may
say "dry clean only" and cleaning in water may ruin(损坏) this coat. If you do as the directions say on the
label, you can keep your clothes looking their best.
Many clothes today must be dry-cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive.  When buying new clothes, you
had better check if they need to be dry-cleaned.  You can save money if you buy clothes that can be
washed or that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been
washed many times.
Clothes that cost more money don't always mean they are better made. They may not fit you, either.
On the other hand, less expensive clothes may sometimes look better and fit you well.
1. The first thing for you to do before you buy clothes is ________
A. to know how to wash them
B. to look for well-made clothes
C. to read the directions inside them
D. to see which kind of clothes you need
2. According to the passage, a sweater may be ________.
A. washed in cold water
B. washed once a week
C. washed in hot water
D. dry-cleaned only
3. What does the underlined word "label" mean?

B. 标签
C. 价格
D. 尺寸
4. ________ look good even after they have been washed a lot of times.
A. Cheap clothes
B. Expensive clothes
C. Dry-cleaned clothes
D. Well- made clothes
5. The main idea for the passage is ________.
A. buying less expensive clothes
B. washing clothes in a right way
C. being a clever clothes shopper
D. choosing the well made clothes

In every country, there are thousands of people who want to help out. Many join organizations
run(管理) by their governments, for example, the Peace Corps in the United States and Voluntary
Service Overseas in Britain. Since the powerful(猛烈的) earthquake took place in Sichuan, more
than 200 thousand volunteers across China have been helping there! They do all kinds of work or
come up with ways to help improve life. Some offer their professional skills for free. Others have
no qualifications(资历), but they love to work hard to help.
One of the most famous volunteers in the world was Mother Teresa. She could be the best
volunteer because she gave her life to helping the poorest people of Calcutta. She helped the
homeless, cared for the sick, gave out food, and became the mother of those without families.
Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities, too. They volunteer
because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful
to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher. As they get older, these reasons are still
the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on-the-job, getting
work experience, and improving their social life.
All volunteers bring joy to the people they help in so many ways. They might read books to the
blind, fix up broken homes, find ways to get water for villages, Could you be a volunteer? What kind
of volunteer work could you do? There is someone in the world who needs you.
1. The Peace Corps is __________ in the United States.
A. a city
B. an organization
C. a volunteer
D. a school
2. The underlined word "those" in the passage means "__________".
A. the homeless
B. the sick
C. the poor
D. the kids
3. What is NOT the reason for teenagers to be volunteers according to the passage?
A. They want to make more friends.
B. They want to be helpful.
C. It helps them get work experience.
D. It can improve their social life.
4. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Volunteers need qualifications.
B. Volunteers offer their help without any pay.
C. Young kids can't be volunteers.
D. Some volunteers bring joy to others.
