What is a library for? Most libraries have books and other things to read. Many of them  have things
to listen to. Some libraries even have computers. Very few people would think of a library as a place to
live in.
One library in New York City turned into (变成) a home for 250 people for a few days. These were
all people near the library. They slept on the floor. Why did the people move into the library?
The people moved into the library because the city wanted to close it to save money. These 250 New Yorkers loved their library. They didn't want to lose it. So they moved in. Dear Jenny,
Today is my first day of new high school. Many students in our school come from big cities. They
bring the high-tech things to school, for example, mobile phones, MP3 players, CD players and electronic
dictionaries. They show off these things to others. What about your classmates in the US? Do they have
thesame things?

Life in the future will be different from life today. Between  then  and  now  many changes will take
place, but what will the changes be?
The  population is  growing  fast. There will be many people in the world and most of them will live
longer than people live now.
Computers will be much smaller and more useful, and there will be at least one in every home. And
Computer Studies lessons will be one of the most important subjects in schools then.
People will work _______ hours than they do now  and  they will have _____ free time for sports,
watching TV and travel. Traveling will be much cheaper and easier. And many more people will go to
other countries for holidays.
There will be changes in our food, too. More  land  will be used for building new towns and houses
for all the people. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so  meat  will  be  more expensive.
Maybe no one will eat it every day. Instead they will eat more fruit and vegetables. Maybe people will
be healthier.
Work in the future will be different, too. Dangerous and hard work will be done by robots. Because
of this, many people will not have enough work to do. This will be a problem.

Dear Mom and Dad,
The time has come:I'm graduating, and I thank you both for all your help during these
15 years. I still remember when you used to say, "You can be whatever you want" I'm so

The bus station, a street corner in the city, the caf ? at the mall… American teenagers like to hang out
at these places.
I want to tell you this is true. American teenagers have far too much time to waste (浪费). Because
they have short school days and their parents are busy at work day and night, US teenagers find happiness
in doing nothing.
"What do you do all day in that park?" A mother will ask her son or daughter, with some reason. "I
don't know, just hang out," her child might answer.
Of course, some kids keep busy with after-school sports, test-prep (测验准备) classes and clubs. I
did some of these activities, too, but still found time to hang out in the park. For hours, my friends and I
would sit on the stairs talking, playing games, or just watching the cars drive by … doing nothing.
Was it all a waste of time? Were we up to "no-good"? Maybe. When I think about it now, I can't
believe I had so much free time as a teenager! Now, I should spend any free moment at the gym (健身房), writing a story or learning a new language. It seems uninteresting, but I do miss "hanging out".
1. Why do American teenagers have so much free time?
A. They don't need to go to school every day.
B. They like to go out with friends.
C. Their school days are short and their parents are busy.

Today Newtown is a clean place, but many years ago there were millions of rats there. The rats even attacked (攻击) the cats and dogs. Sometimes many of them tried to bite men or women at night. The rats
were very large in size and they harmed (伤害) many people. The city office ordered every one to kill rats. However, most people were lazy, so they did not kill many rats.
The city office could do nothing with the citizens and could do nothing with the rats, either. Some time

began to kill rats. They got as many dead rats as they could. And some of them even stopped their own
work to kill rats because they could get more pay. Every day a city official(官员) put all the dead rats
together. He was very busy doing that, because sometimes a man brought hundreds of them in one day.
Two weeks later, there were not so many rats in the city as before, but people still brought many dead rats to the city office. The city officials felt surprised at this but at last they found out people were stealing the
dead rats they had collected. So the city official had to order his men to dig a big hole and put the dead
rats in it. Soon there were no more rats and the city did not have to pay any more money for that.
