allowed to carry mobile phones during school hours.
Mobile phone used among children has become a problem for the school years. Several children have got
mobile phones as Christmas presents, and more students will want them. Marry Brown, a headmaster, said that
mobile phone was a distraction (分心事) to students during school hours and it also gave teachers so much
trouble in their classrooms. Teachers were also saying that sometimes students might use phone messages to
cheat during exams.
She said some schools had tried to ban (禁止) mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they
couldn't get in touch with their children.
Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school. But there was a good reason that they
could leave their phones at school offices. They also said they were easily lost and were a distraction for studies.

schools should let the students know when they can use their mobile phones.

Between now and then many changes will take place in this century. But what will the changes be? The
population is growing fast. There will be many people in the world and most of them will live longer than
people live now.
Computers will be much smaller and more useful, and there will be at least one in every home. And
computer studies will be one of the important subjects in school then.
People will work fewer hours than they do now, and they will have more free time for sports, watching
TV and travel. Traveling will be much cheaper and easier. And many more people will go to other countries
for holidays.
There will be changes in our food, too. More land will be used for building new towns and houses for
all the people. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more expensive. Maybe
no one will eat it every day. Instead they will eat more fruit and vegetables. Maybe people will be healthier.
Work in the future will be different, too. Dangerous and hard work will be done by robots. Because of this,
many people will not have enough work to do. This will be a problem.

What is the population of China? There are more than a billion and two hundred million people in China. It is
almost one fifth of the world's population. How to control the population growth is a big problem. Some people
think   1   to control the population growth. But I don't quite agree   2   them, because where there's a will, there
is a way.
The question is that we should make it   3   how serious the population problem is. Our farmland is becoming
less and less to everyone. We have already got too many mouths to feed.   4   we control the population growth,
many people will die   5   hunger. Too fast population growth has been and will be bad for our nation. Though
laws (法律) have been   6   to control the population growth, in some places   7   is done to carry out (贯彻) the
law. We should make people   8   that it is foolish of them to bring too many children into the world. They should
9   do what they have been doing for many years.
We are fighting against the fast population growth. Yes, the fighting won't end   10   everyone knows its
importance and does something for it.

As many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins (企鹅) may be in danger of disappearing. The number of
penguins have decreased (减少) by 30% since 1987.
Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South
America, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Many live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters
in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly, but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill (磷虾).
The warming of the earth is the decrease in penguin populations. The heating of the air has caused ocean
waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reduced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later
these birds are completely unable to reproduce (繁殖). Besides, many adult penguins die of hunger.
Widespread (广泛的) fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks (漏) also make penguins be in danger.
Poisonous organisms (生物) in ocean water are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including
wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.
News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago, oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the
penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat
the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reproducing
in higher numbers than before the oil leaking.
1. Penguins ________.
[     ]
A. can swim better than fly
B. can be found near Oceania (大洋洲)
C. eat fish only
D. live only in cold waters.
2. Which of the following is NOT the cause of penguin's decrease in numbers?
[     ]
A. Oil searching.
B. Widespread fishing.
C. Human's killing.
D. Warming of the oceans.
3. Why are the penguins in South Africa reproducing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking?
[     ]
A. Because people removed the ship.
B. Because people sent a lot of penguins to the wild.
C. Because people helped the penguins.
D. Because people treated the penguins well.
4. What's the best title of the passage?
[     ]
A. Penguins
B. Penguins May Be in Danger of Disappearing
C. Help the Disappearing Penguins.
D. The Number of the Penguins in South Africa is Getting More Than Before

What is a supermarket? In the dictionary, a supermarket is a large self-service department store. Some
supermarkets have two floors. When you enter such a supermarket,an elevator (电梯) will take you to the
second floor. Here you can buy things such as CDs, pens, clothes, TVs and refrigerator after you have
collected the things you want to buy on the second floor, you can go downstairs to the first floor where
food and drinks are sold (被卖到). You can also buy fresh fruit, vegetables and meat on this floor.
People like to go shopping in the supermarket. Here are some of the reasons (原因).
*First, the prices are reasonable (合理的). The prices are lower than these in special shops and you can
choose whatever you want, without going place to place.
★Second the service is great. You can walk around freely and no one will ask you, "What can I do for
you?" If you can't find anything, just ask a service person and he or she will tell you where it is at once.
★Third, the quality is good. If you get home and find the food bad, you can return it and they will say
sorry and change it for you.
★Nowadays many people don't have much time to walk from one shop to another, so people choose to
go to the supermarket in order to save time and money.
★What's more, if you don't want to buy anything, you can just come and look around in the supermarket.
It's a good place to have a walk.

In Britain you are allowed to drive a car when you are seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving
license before you can start. When you are learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with
you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don't have to go to a driving school …a
friend can teach you. 3. The person with you isn't allowed to take the money for the lesson unless he's got a
teacher's license
.
Before you are allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your
own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then
answer a few questions. If you don't pass the test, you are allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you
want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons. When you've passed your test, you
don't have to take it again, and you are allowed to go on driving as long as you like. 4. Britain's oldest driver
was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100
.
Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license.
But they didn't have to take a test until 1935. On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren't allowed
to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag.
