Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence (智力) and feelings. In
August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble
and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot
at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather
changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists that IQ of a
group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was
10% below. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can
make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months
of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They
usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may
have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on
low pressure days. There is "good weather" for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of
about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather's problem.

"Teenager" means people from 13 to 19 years old. Although they're young, they have to make many
important choices by themselves. They need to think about questions like these: Should we go to college?
What kind of jobs do I want? However, other people also influence their choices. Who influences teenagers?
It depends on the kind of choice. When teenagers buy things, friends are the most important influence.
This is especially true for clothes and music. TV shows, advertisements and parents also influence teenagers.
In more serious things, parents are probably the most important influence. Some teenagers say it's best to
regard both parents and friends as influences. James, a seventeen-year-old boy says he's "just a crazy man",
he also says, "Parents are really important because they can tell you what's right and wrong. " But teenagers
also feel they need to make choices-to make their own mistakes. As one teenager girl said, "If our parents
don't let us make our own choices, maybe in the future we don't know how to do it. " And they feel friends
can often be a big help, especially because friends sometimes know more about their situation than their
parents do.
Do you depend on parents or others when you decide what to do and how to do it? Whoever you depend
on, the correct choice is the most important. Your future is in your hand.

Many textbooks are not written in the kind of English that we speak every day. In fact, sometimes
the reading is so difficult that it almost seems like a foreign language. In a way, it is-the language of
science. You should not expect to be able to read a difficult science passage the same way you read an
interesting story; you should not expect to read it easily and all at once. Instead, you may have to read it
several times through, catching on the meaning of difficult words, going back over difficult sentences,
and finally putting the whole thing together. Do not be discouraged if the whole passage don't make sense
to you at first. You need to pick it apart patiently until you can understand it.
These are the steps to follow when you are reading something difficult:
1. Start to read normally until you run into a sentence that doesn't make sense to you.
2. When a sentence doesn't make sense, go back and read it again more slowly.
3. Look for any word you don't know in the sentence. Try to understand their meanings using word parts
and context clues (上下文线索). If necessary, look them up in the dictionary.
4. Look at the next few sentences to see if they explain more about the sentence you are working on. Do
not read very much farther ahead until you understand what is being said.
5. Finally, read the sentence again. Try to put it into simpler words.
6. Read through the passage once. Try to understand all the hard parts well. Then read the whole passage
once more at a usual speed. This helps you to put all ides together. The stops sound a lot harder than
they are. It is really just the normal way good readers understand anything that is difficult to read. After
you have done the best you can this way, you should always feel free to ask for help from your teacher,
    if you have one.
1. The underlined phrase "run into" means ______.
[     ]
A. work out
B. come across
C. look into
D. pass by

A. we should look up new words before reading
B. it is sometimes difficult to read a science passage
C. the six steps are helpful in learning spoken English
D. interesting stories help readers to improve their English
3. The massage is mainly about ______.
[     ]
A. steps of studying science
B. difficulties in reading science
C. ways of reading science passages
D. researches on science and English
