In general, people talk about two groups of colors: warm colors and cool colors. Scientists think that there
are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors.
The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually
want to be active. People think that what red symbolizes (代表) is exciting sociable (善交际的) people who
like to be with others like red. The cool colors are green, blue and purple. These colors unlike warm colors,
are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people there are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone
often prefer blue.
Red may be exciting but one scientist says that time seems to pass more slow in a room with warm colors
than in a room with cool colors. He suggested that a warm color such as red or orange, is a good color for a
living room or a restaurant. People who are relaxing or eating don't want time to pass quickly.
Cool colors are better for offices or factories as the people who work there want time to pass quickly.
Scientist don't know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool.
However, almost everyone agree that warm colors remind people of warm days and cool colors remind
them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is low during winter, the sunlight appears quite blue. Because
it is higher during summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.
(     )1. When people talk about two groups of people, they mean those that like warm colors and like cool
           colors.
(     )2. The warm colors are red, purple and yellow.
(     )3. The people who like warm colors are very easy to get on with others.
(     )4. The persons who are relaxing don't want time to pass slowly.
(     )5. The best title of the passage is "Colors and People".

Although cliff diving may bring great excitement, it's a very dangerous sport that people should be careful
about. It is completely wrong to think that the diver is cushioned (缓冲) by the water below-this could not be
further from the truth. When jumping from a cliff that is over 70 feet high, a diver hits the water at over 46 mph
(miles per hour). Such high speeds make the point of contact feel like a wall, so the diving skills are very
important.
Professional divers are trained and well-prepared to make dives. However, non-professionals should never
dive because a diver's body position (体位) at the time of contacting water is very important to his or her safety.
Because of the great danger, divers should always seriously think about their skills before trying any moves.
Although there is no truly safe way to jump off a cliff, non-professional divers are encouraged to pencil dive.
To do a pencil dive, the jumpers leap their feet first off the cliff, keep arms at their sides with legs together and
pointing downward. The diver should keep the body tight and vertical (垂直的). This is safer because it makes
the point of contact smaller when the diver enters the water and puts less stress (压力) on the body.
Wearing a wet suit while diving will result in less pain. So it is wise for new divers to wear wet suits. But
professional divers suggest staying away from water shoes. Although wearing shoes might seem like a good
idea, they actually increase the force of impact(冲击力) because they increase the surface area of the diver at
impact. The increased force of impact puts stress on a diver's body and can lead to broken bones. Without a
doubt, diving without shoes is the safer way to go.
Besides the height, speed, water depth and body position, it is also important for divers to make wise
decisions when they are thinking about diving. Cliff diving tests both a person's physical and mental(心理的)
skills, so it is never a good idea to jump with a sudden idea. A person needs to be of sound mind and in good
health to even think about a dive. One should never try a dive if he has drunk wine. What's more, a person
should never make someone who is not feeling 100% confident dive.

Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. One of the most serious
earthquakes in world history took place in Japan in 1923. The shock and fires caused by it destroyed
much of Tokyo and Yokohama and left more than 7000 dead. Other countries do not have many. For
examples, there are few earthquakes in Brirain, France, Germany.
There is often a great noise during an earthquake, but it is not always. The earth rocks. Houses fall
down. Railway lines are broken. Sometimes many people are killed in an earthquake. People think
earthquakes often happen near volcanoes (火山), but this is not always true. The centers of some are
under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the
rocks. The coast is rocking and great waves are caused there. These waves travel long distances and
rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings:
sometimes they break more buildings than earthquake itself.
What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake? A building with concrete (水泥) walls is
perhaps the best. A steel frame (框架) will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts
together and the walls do not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel (钢材)
does not burn. This kind of building is the safest. Today modern concrete and steel apartment buildings
are commonly seen in cities of Japan.

Students often want to practice their English outside class. One of the best ways to practice your English
is to speak to a foreigner. This week's question comes from a student who is eager to start a conversation
with the foreigners he sees every day. One student asks, "Is it Okay to try to talk to foreigners I see in the
street?"
The answer is yes or no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask him,
"May I help you?" But, otherwise, you should probably let them get on with their business. Situations,
however, do exist (存在) where it is quite all right to talk to foreigners. If a foreigner enters your school,
office, shop or restaurant, for instance (例如), feel free to ask him (for example):
     — What is your name?
     — Where do you come from?
     — What do you think of Beijing?
     — How long will you stay in Beijing?
There are also situations where it's Okay to talk to foreigners in public places. If you see a foreigner
alone in a restaurant, bar or coffee shop, it may be appropriate (合适的) to ask him or her:
     — Is this seat free?
     — Do you mind if I talk to you in English?
You can probably help them if they are new to China and if they are alone. You may be able to make them
feel more welcome.
After a few such questions, you should know whether this person wants to talk to you or not. If they ask
you similar questions, or if they give long, informative answers, you're in luck. If not, then give them their
privacy (独处). Talking to strangers is fun if you choose the right time and place.

A. it is polite to stop a foreigner to talk with him in the street
B. it is polite to interrupt foreigners in a conversation
C. it is impolite to interrupt a foreigner when he or she is on business
D. it is impolite to help a foreigner find his way
3. When you first meet a foreigner, you should say "_____".
[     ]
A. Where are you going?
B. Have you eaten your dinner?
C. Can you help me with my English?
D. Nice to meet you.
4. The writer suggests us that we should _____.

What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don't know what
to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown away as the
rubbish.
Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has
agreed to help recycle old Sony products (产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take
back some old computers.
In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and
recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is
that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers
that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade (升级).
Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds
of organizations are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach
others how to repair computers. The computers then go to schools, charities (慈善团体) and people who

Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big, and they
can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap (捕蝇草).
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the
pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly
touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses
the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.
