Laptops are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These
laptops connect people to their workplaces. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their
classrooms.
West Lake College in Virginia will start a laptop program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere
they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part
of the 510 million computer programs at West Lake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also
have access (通路) to the Internet. In addition (另外), they will be able to use e-mails to "speak" with their
teachers, their classmates and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that
students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a
fast-food restaurant or under the trees. Anywhere is OK!
Because of many changes in computer technology, laptops are widely used in higher education, such as
colleges and universities. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers.
In addition, the portable (便携式的) computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries
and other resources (资源). State higher-education officials are studying how to help students. State officials are
also testing laptop programs at other universities.
At West Lake College, more than 60 percent of the staff (员工) use computers. The laptops will allow all
teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one West Lake teacher said, here we are in the middle of Virginia
and we're giving students a window of the world. They can see everything and do everything.

If you do not use your arm or your legs for some time, they become weak, when you start using
them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to
know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory (记忆力),
he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his
memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend
says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor
memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame (受责备), and few of us know that it is just his
own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write, but usually they have better
memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things they can write
down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is
the whole time being exercised.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: Practice remembering.
1. The main reason for one with poor memory is that _____.

[     ]

A. his father or mother may have a poor memory
B. he does not use his arms or legs for some time
C. his memory is not often used
D. he can't read or write
2. If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, _____.

[     ]

A. you can't use them any more
B. they will become stronger
C. they become weak and won't become strong until you use them again
D. they will not change
3. Which of the following is NOT true?

[     ]

A. Your memory works in the same way as your arms or legs.
B. Your memory, like your arms or legs,
becomes weak if you don't give it enough chance for practice.
C. Don't learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory.
D. A good memory comes from more practice.
4. Some people can't read or write, but they usually have better memories, because _____.

[     ]

A. they have saved much trouble
B. they have saved much time to remember things
C. they have to use their memories all the time
D. they can't write everything in a little notebook
5. Give a best title for this passage _____.

A new problem has appeared in the world of technology- the mobile phone viruses. The first virus
called "Skulls" and "Dust", was discovered in July, 2004. Compared to computer viruses, these were
harmless, but proved that a virus could be spread across a mobile network.
But as mobile phone technology moves forward, so do the viruses and the people who create them.
Now many people use "pocket computers" such as PDAs and "smart-phones" which can receive multimedia
messages in different forms like photos, videos, and music, and the most recent virus, "Cabir", is spread by
opening these kinds of multimedia messages. This virus gets into the mobile phone or PDA and then makes
it stop working. In only six months the virus has spread across almost 20 countries across the world-that
shows that it could easily get into millions of phones and PDAs.
There are some viruses inside illegal (非法的) copies of games. These viruses take personal information
that is stored on someone's phone, and use it to make money for the people who sent the virus. Sometimes
the viruses have a programme that makes expensive phone calls to high cost numbers. The result is a very
high phone bill for the victim (受害者).
In answer to this new threat (威胁), many new models of mobile phones and PDAs are now appearing
in stores with anti-virus software on them, just like computers.
1. The earliest mobile phone viruses were called
A. "Skulls"
B. "Dust"
C. "Skulls" and "Dust"
2. The earliest mobile phone viruses
A. were dangerous
B. were not dangerous
C. made phones stop working
3. What does the underlined word "multimedia" mean?
A. Photos, videos and sound.
B. Photos and videos.
C. Pocket computer.
4. How is the newest virus spread?
A. By playing games on phones.
B. By opening multimedia messages.
C. By calling expensive phone numbers.
5. What are mobile phone companies doing to stop viruses?
A. They are making fewer new phones.
B. They are putting anti-virus software on new phones.
C. They are improving mobile technology.

"How can I learn English well?" This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective
way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you've learned it fairly well. And
if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you're a very successful learner indeed. Your English
will be quite perfect.
This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you'll find it not half
so hard as you might have thought. Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also
necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.
Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news.
When using English, try to forget your mother tongue, instead of helping you, your own language gets in your
way. So, never try to see English through translation.
1. In the writer's opinion, the most effective way in learning English is _____.
A. to practise speaking, writing and feeling it
B. to forget your own native language
C. to translate everything into his own language
D. to memorize the English words and grammatical rules
2. "Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way." This sentence means that memorizing your
    own language can _____.
A. help you to study English well
B. stop you learning English well
C. make English easy to learn
D. help you notice mistakes
3. Equally important is to feel the language "to feel the language" here means _____.
A. to get a knowledge of English by touching
B. to be able to read and write English
C. to translate English into your own by imagining
D. to be able to understand and enjoy the language

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? You're not alone. Back experts (专家) in the USA are
worried about that young students are having back and neck problems because they are carrying too much in
their backpacks.
"It hurts my back when I run," said Ebelin Reyes, a student in Virginia. "It's hard to get up the stairs with
my backpack because it's too heavy." Students have to carry heavy backpacks on their backs for a whole
week's study. Ebelin is one of them. They have regular (固定的) backpacks with two straps (带子) to carry
them, but a number of students with heavy loads (负担) have switched to rolling backpacks. The backpacks
have wheels and can roll on the ground. Shirley Park's backpack weighs 10 kilos, and she said, "I'll change
to a rolling backpack because I am starting to have back pain."
How much is too much? Experts say that students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own
body weight. A few students have had a good idea to lighten (减轻) the load: less homework.
     Doctor's suggestions:
     (1) Lighten the load. Take home only the books the students need that day.
     (2) Wide straps are better. They can send out weight over your shoulders (肩) and be sure to wear
backpacks with two straps.
     (3) The heaviest things should be packed closest to the back.
     (4) Bend (弯曲) both knees when you pick up the pack, don't just bend over the waist (腰).
1. The main idea of the passage is about _____.
A. the problems made by rolling backpacks
B. the advantage of backpacks
C. the best backpacks for students
D. how to lighten students' backpacks
2. From what Ebelin Reyes and Shirley Park said, we know _____.
A. students like to carry heavy backpacks
B. students have to do a lot of homework
C. backpacks with wheels are bad for students
D. students have no time to play because of heavy backpacks
3. The underlined word "switch to" means _____.
A. use for
B. turn to
C. catch up
D. begin to use
4. According to the experts, it's better for a student of 40 kilos to carry a backpack of _____ at most.
A. 10 kilos
B. 8 kilos
C. 6 kilos
D. 7 kilos
5. If students follow the doctor's suggestions, they _____.
A. may do less homework
B. may feel their backpacks are lighter
C. can learn how to enjoy themselves
D. will know why to wear heavy backpacks

The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering (掌握) a few good ways that others can learn.
Here are some secrets of straight-A (全优的) students.
① Study comes first. When the books are open, phone calls will not be answered, TV shows will not
be watched.
② Study anywhere or everywhere. Some students work late at night when the house is quiet. Others
wake up early. But straight-A students study as soon as they come home from school. All agree that they
succeed in their study because they can keep studying like this.
③ Organize well. Don't waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. Keep everything at the right
place.
④ Plan your time. If you want to be a straight-A student, make sure to finish all your tasks before the
deadine (最后期限).
