The Japanese may be the most polite (礼貌的) people in the world. In Japan, everyone spends a lot
of time saying "please", "thank you" and "sorry". Sometimes it takes a long time to say something very
easy, such as "You are standing on my foot." Just saying "sorry" makes Japanese people feel good. The
Japanese are very polite and they don't have a word for "no" in their language. Japanese people don't just
use words when they meet. They also bow. The lower they bow, the more polite they are. Last week,

even the losing (失败的) team, bow towards (向) the playground," wrote the reporter. "That's such a
strange thing. I believe you can only find it in Japan."
But it seems (似乎) that the Japanese bow only to the Japanese. They shake hands (握手) with
Chinese, Americans and people from other countries. It would be interesting if a foreigner wants to bow
like Japanese but his Japanese friend holds out his hand.

                                           Advice on Test Taking
★Read the directions carefully. This may help you not make careless mistakes.
★If there is time, look through the whole test quickly. If you can, take short notes to help you
remember answers that come to your mind on the test or answer sheet (纸). But remember to ask if that
is allowed!
★Answer questions in the right order(顺序): 1. Answer easy questions first to build confidence (信
心). It may also help you answer more difficult questions later. 2. Then answer difficult questions or the
most important ones. If you need to choose answers, first find those answers that are probably wrong. If
there are two answers with similar (类似的) ideas, both of them may be wrong. Then choose the best
answer. If you still can't tell the right one, believe the first one that comes to your mind. If you need to
answer some questions, give short descriptions of your ideas and then put them in order.
★Review: Don't leave as soon as you have finished all the questions. Review your test to make sure
that you ◎have answered all questions ◎did not choose answers that you don't really want ◎did not
make simple mistakes

Some people believe that genes and intelligence (基因和智力) decide a student's success. But there
is no study to support this opinion, and in fact, it is wrong. Students'success or failure (失败) is finally
decided by one simple thing: how they learn. Some students are lucky when they find ways that arehelpful
for them to study. But not all students are so lucky. Some students still learn in wrong ways. Dr. James
J. Asher developed "Total Physical Response" as a way to teach languages. Studies at San Jose State
University showed that students who moved their bodies while learning English learned more words and
grammar in a short time. Those who sat still and didn't move learned less. After a year, the students who
learned by moving their bodies still remembered 80% or more of what they had learned, while the others
forgot over 80%. So you should make sure that you keep moving when you learn English. As you listen
to a story or an article, mime (模拟) the action. For example, if you hear the word "go", move yourfeet.
Pretend you are acting out the story or the article that you are listening to. By doing this, you will be able
to learn English better, remember it longer and use it more easily.

When people visit Switzerland for the first time, they look with great interest, not only at the mountains
but also at a type of clock-a Cuckoo-clock, on sale there. Cuckoo-clocks are very popular with tourists
looking for a souvenir. A Cuckoo-clock has a small painted cuckoo that comes out near the top of the clock
every half an hour and says, "Cuckoo". Every hour it comes out and says "Cuckoo" the right number of times.
It does not get a sore throat at midnight or mid-day! Children find these clocks wonderful. Adults gradually
get annoyed because the cuckoo never misses an hour or a half hour, and this makes a short sleep in an
armchair rather difficult.
In Europe, the cuckoo's call is a welcome sign that summer is on the way. This is the time when the
mother cuckoo flies round, looking for a nest (巢) to lay one of her eggs. She chooses a nest belonging to
another bird which already has eggs. When the nest is left unnoticed for a minute or two, the cuckoo rushes
down, lays an egg and hurries off. In this way, she may lay her eggs in as many as four different nests. not
one of which has been built by herself.
When a cuckoo egg hatches (孵化), the baby bird is bigger and stronger than the other nestlings. Step by
step, it pushes other baby birds and any unhatched eggs out of the nest. In this way, it receives all the food
from its foster-parents (养父母) and has a better chance of surviving.

3. Tourists like to buy Cuckoo-clocks _____.
A. to remind them of a visit
B. because they can tell time exactly
C. to amuse their children
D. because they are cheaper than other clocks
4. Why are Europeans happy to hear the call of the cuckoo?
A. They like to catch and eat this large bird.
B. The bird has a beautiful way of singing.
C. This bird is used to tell the time in Switzerland.
D. It makes them think that warmer weather is coming.
5. What may other birds think when a cuckoo lays an egg in their nest?
A. They push it out of their nest.
B. It seems that they don't know what has happened.
C. They don't like it but cannot do anything about it.
D. They welcome the egg and the young cuckoo.
