I was so excited after I had found the holiday in the guidebook. It said, “Enjoy a week of sightseeing in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities 1 staying at one of its best hotels. ” Now I wasn’t so sure. I had waited fifteen minutes at reception  (前台) when I 2 and now the shower in my room wasn’t working. I 3 hotel reception.

“Are you sure?”
“Of course I’m sure!”
“I’ll 5 our hotel engineer at once. ”
An hour later, the engineer came to look at the 6. He hit the pipes (水管) a few times and looked 7. “Sorry, but I cannot fix it today. Maybe, tomorrow.” Then he 8 his hand. I couldn’t believe it! He wanted a tip (小费) for doing 9! I was very angry. But suddenly, I had a better idea. 10, I gave the engineer a few coins. He hadn’t fixed my shower but he had taught me something 11 staying in his country. Two minutes later I was at the reception desk. I explained the 12 to the receptionist (接待员) and he replied, “Sorry. This is a 13 situation, but what can we do?” I knew exactly 14 to do. I gave the hotel manager a very large tip. Fifteen minutes later I 15 into Room 405. It was twice the size of Room 308, it had a wonderful view (景色) of the city, a comfortable bed and, most importantly, there was water in the bathroom.

Is global warming killing the Maldives?
The Maldives(马尔代夫) is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Every year, millions of 1 go there to enjoy the wonderful scenery. And in recent years, more and more people would like to visit it,2 ? Because the little island country is 3 . If global warming 4 , say scientists, the country will go down into the ocean within 100 years. That means the Maldives 5have disappeared by 2100.
The Maldives 6in the Indian Ocean. It is the 7 country on earth—its highest point is only 2.4m above sea level. 8 Greenhouse gas emissions(排放), global temperature and sea levels will rise 99cm and 88cm by 2100. If scientists are 10 , most of the Maldives will be covered with water in years.
Last October, Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and his cabinet(内阁)held the world’s first underwater cabinet meeting to make the world 11the terrible results from global warming to their own country. In December, he 12 at the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference(大会) in Copenhagen, trying to ask for help from the world for 13country. The president even has a 14 to buy a new homeland and move his country and people to a new place.
The Moldavian government has been doing all it can to fight the 15 . But the fate(命运)of the islands is in the world’s hands. No one wants to see this little island country disappear from the world.

Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single mom) sent him to have his first piano lesson. I prefer that students begin at an earlier age, but Robby said that it had always been his mother’s 1 to hear him play the piano. So I 2 him as a student.
Although Robby worked very hard, he didn’t have a basic 3 of music. However, he never 4 up and continued. And at the end of each weekly lesson he’d always say: “My mom is going to hear me 5 some day.” But it seemed 6. He didn’t have a natural talent or ability for music.
One day Robby 7 to our lessons very late. He told me that his mom had been 8 and unable to take him to piano lessons, but he was still 9 in class. He asked if he could take part in my concert and I 10.
The night of the concert came. The high school gym(体育馆) was 11 with parents, friends and relatives. The concert was going well. Then, Robby came up on stage. He announced (宣布) that he had chosen Mozart’s Concerto No 21 in C Major. I was not prepared for what I heard next.
His 12 danced on the keys…
He played so 13 that everyone was on his feet, clapping excitedly. In tears, I ran up on stage, “Oh, Robby! How could you do it?”
“Well, Miss Hondorf... remember I told you my mom was sick? Well, actually she had cancer(癌) and 14 away this morning. And well… she was born deaf, so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play at the 15. I wanted to make it special and show her I could do it! My mother’s dream came true at last.”

Feeling lonely can make you sick. Doctors have long known that loneliness can cause many health problems and even death. What they didn’t know is 1 this feeling causes illness. A study in the online magazine Genome Biology2 that loneliness actually influences the important part of our bodies—our genes.
In a small population of patients, researchers 3 more than 20,000 genes to compare how the genes of lonely and non-lonely individuals (个体) express themselves in molecular processes (分子过程) and in personal health. They found that gene expression is 4长期地) lonely people. “We now have a new way for understanding the relationship 5 social experience and physical health,” explains the study’s lead author, Steve Cole of University of California, Los Angeles.
“This study—the first to link (联系) 6 with gene changes—is special and exciting,” says Emma Adam, a professor of human development at Northwestern University. “It 7
According to John Cacioppo, an author of the study from the University of Chicago, the
work suggests that loneliness is a warning 8, much like physical pain. “This feeling is so bad because 9 of us wants to be forgotten; that’ s also what human means,” he says. “It makes us 10 for other people and want to be with friends when we’re lonely.”

Twelve-year-old Kitty O’Neil asked her coach, “Let me try.” She was already on the swim team, but this was different. One of the divers had not arrived, and Kitty needed much help. Her coach looked 1 at her. She had been practicing dives, but could she really stand up to the competition? Besides, 2 was completely deaf. Many people thought a person who was deaf wouldn’t be able to dive well. However, Kitty 3, and she won first place at that swimming meet and went on to win the Junior Olympics in the area.
Kitty began diving with Dr. Sammy Lee, a famous coach and former Olympic diving champion. The teenager went to school in the morning and then spent most afternoons diving. It was 4 work, and Kitty often hit the water the wrong way. However, she was able to 5 practicing. While she was diving , Kitty won many gold medals, but she wanted 6. Perhaps she learned something from her 7. Kitty lost her hearing at the age of four months. Because she wanted Kitty to lead a normal life, Kitty’s mother went to college to 8 about teaching people who are deaf. Kitty’s mother finally started a school for those who are deaf.
Kitty’s life was9 but normal, and as an athlete, Kitty was much bettter than others. When she gave up diving, she wanted danger and adventure. She raced cars, boats, and motorcycles. Many of these 10 usually require at least some hearing. For example many racers judge their speed by the sound of the engine. Kitty did it by 11.
In 1972 she began to learn doing dangerous action for movies and television. Soon she became one of the 12 women in Hollywood. In 1976 Kitty O’Neil also became the fastest woman in the world in a rocket-powered car that went more than 512 miles per hour.
