Learning to Accept
I learned how to accept life from my father.1, he did not teach me to learn to accept when he was strong and healthy, but when he was 2and ill.
My father was3a strong man who loved being active, but a terrible illness 4all that away. Now he can 5 walk, and he must sit quietly in a chair6 Even talking is7 One night, I went to visit him with my sisters. We started 8 about life, and I told them about one of my 9. I said that we must very often give things up as we grow —our youth, our beauty, our friends -- but it always seems that after we give something up, we get 10 in its place. Then suddenly my father spoke up. He said, “But Peter, I gave up 11 ! What did I get?” I thought and thought, but I could not think of anything to say.12, he answered his own question: “I 13the love of my family.” I looked at my sisters and saw tears in their eyes, 14 hope and thankfulness, I was also15by his words.

“I can’t believe what I’m hearing!” I thought to myself. Jeff was the last candidate (候选人)for president of Student Council. My best friend Tony came to me and said, “I’m sorry, Mike. I really thought you should be1.”
Later that day, I happened to pass Jeff in the dining room. I offered him a 2“Congratulations” and walked to my usual table. To my surprise, Jeff put his plate beside mine.
“I’m, er…I’m just wondering if you would …consider coming to work on my team,” he said3. “You are really smart, and you would be a great manager.”
“I don’t think so,” I replied, feeling unsure.
“Well, if you change your mind, we are meeting tomorrow,” he said before moving to another table.
All that night, I thought about the offer from Jeff. Maybe being a part of the election process(选举过程) would give me a 4 to make important changes at our school. I decided to join them.
My first goal was to 5 an attractive advertisement. Within a few days, we designed a poster with Jeff’s pictures showing him in a number of activities. No one could walk through any hallway6 passing Jeff’s smiling face.
My next step was to 7 which new activities students would like to have at our school. Many of them wanted a chess club and a volleyball team.
With the information I had collected, Jeff met with the headmaster. The headmaster 8to add these activities to our school program.
An eighth grader said, “It’ll be like attending a new school with Jeff as president.”
Hearing these words made my heart filled with 9. I had wanted to become president of Student Council to make a difference. I achieved that and more by working as a member of Jeff’s team. He became the most popular candidate and I was large part of his 10. The fact that it has made a difference in other people’s lives is the real prize. What a great feeling!

Jim, a successful businessman, told the experience of his childhood.
When he was 12, his parents 1. He was alone and didn’t get on well with others. People always laughed 2 him. No one showed kindness (友善) to him. His only friend was a dog named Tige.
One day as he walked down the street, a young lady was walking in front of him. Suddenly one of her bags dropped from her arms. As she stopped 3, she dropped other bags. He came to help her.“Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!”She said kindly, smiling.
A special feeling came to him. These were 4 kind words he had ever heard. He watched her 5 she went far away, and he whistled(吹口哨)to his dog and went directly to the river nearby.
“Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!”he repeated the woman’s words. Then in a low 6 he said to his dog,“You are a nice little dog!”Tige raised 7 ears as if(似乎)it understood.
“Uh! Even a dog likes it!”he said,“Well, Tige, I won’t say unkind words to you any more.”Tige waved its tail happily.
The boy thought and thought. Finally he looked at himself in the river. He saw 8 but a dirty boy. He washed his face 9. Again he looked. He saw a clean nice boy. He was amazed (震惊). From then on, he had a new life.
After telling this, the businessman stopped for a while, and then he said,“Ladies and gentlemen, this is the place where that kind woman planted in me the first seed (种子) of kindness. All of us should learn about kindness. 10 a great power it has!” If you show kindness to others, you will be an able man.
