A wise man was walking from one town to another with a few of his followers, and they happened to pass a lake. So they stopped there to 1for a while, and the wise man said to one of his followers, “I am very 2. Could you please 3 me some water from the lake?”
The follower walked to the lake4the wise man requested. Some people were washing clothes in the water, and right at that moment, several carts (手推车) started crossing the lake. 5, the water became very muddy.
Then he went back and told the wise man that the water was very muddy and not 6 to drink.
After they had rested for about half an hour, the wise man again asked the 7 follower to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. As requested, the follower went to the lake. This time he found that all the mud had 8 to the bottom. The water was very 9 and looked fit to drink. So he 10his water bottle and took it to the wise man.
The wise man took the water bottle and drank, then looked up at the follower. “See what you did 11 the water clean?” he said. “You let it be for a while and the mud settled down on its own,12 you could get some clear drinking water. Your mind can also be like that lake when it is 13 by something. If you just let it be and give it a little time, it will most likely settle down on its own 14 being put in any effort at all to 15 it.”

A young man was about to finish school. For a long time he had 1 to get a beautiful sports car. He knew his father could well 2 it, so he told him that a sports car was all he wanted. Then on the morning of his graduation(毕业),he was called to his father’s room. His father told him how 3he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful gift box. 4, the young man opened the box and found a lovely Bible(圣经)with his name on it. Angrily, he raised his5 to his father and said, “With all your money you give me a Bible? ” He then rushed out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years passed and the young man was very 6in business, and had a beautiful home and a wonderful family.7 that his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him 8that graduation day. Before he could go, he received a phone telling him that his father had died. He had to go home immediately and take care of the things that his father left him. When he began to search through his father’s important papers, he saw the still new Bible, 9 as he had left it years ago. He opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key with a tag(标牌)dropped from the back of the Bible. On the tag was the 10 of his graduation, and the words “PAID IN FULL”. Sadness and regret(悔恨)filled his heart.

I asked my 3 to go over and hand this old man something. He 4 into my husband’s face, smiled and said, “5.” I felt so happy and I wished the old man could live 6the cold night.
I was sure to meet him again and find out how he was the next 7 as I have to pass this way every day. I did so the next evening, and he remembered the 8and came up to my window and9at me. Life in the 22nd century will be different from that in the 21st century because many changes will happen in the new century. 1what will the changes be?
First, the population is growing very fast. There 2 more and more people in the world and most of them will live longer than before. Computers will be 3 smaller and more useful, and there will be 4 one in every home. And 5 studies will be one of the most important subjects in schools.
Second, people will work 6 hours than they are doing in the 21st century. They’ll have more free time for sports, watching TV and7. Traveling will also be cheaper and easier. And more people will go to8 countries for holidays.
Third, there will be changes in our food, too. People will use more land to 9 new towns and houses. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so 10 will be more expensive. Maybe no one eat it everyday; 11 , they will eat more vegetables and fruit. Maybe people will be 12 .
Last, work in the future will be13 , too. Robots will do the 14 and hard work. Because of this, many people won’t have 15 work to do. This will be a problem.

I used to live in my own room alone. But one day it all changed when my brother Mike asked to share my 1. At first, my parents said “no” to him, but at last my mother agreed. I cried and asked my parents not to do this, 2 it didn’t work.
As soon as Mike entered my room, it began to become 3. To my anger, he often left his unwashed clothes and toys everywhere!
One evening, I was doing some 4 on my computer while Mike was listening to music.  5 I left my seat to get some water. A big surprise was waiting for me when I 6. He was using my computer to play game. I had forgotten to save the homework. Sadly, he had closed my program 7 saving it—all I had done had disappeared! I 8 him. He cried a lot as my mother came and beat him. My mother also asked him to leave my room at once.
Then I did my homework 9. At 10: 00 pm. I finished it. When I was going to turn off the 10 I saw the photo of my 11 that he had put on my table. I looked at his lovely face and remembered how 12 he was when my mom beat him. I really felt 13. I went to see what he was doing. I found he was 14
I was as moved and said. “From now on, my room is not only mine. It is 15!” That very night, Mike and I shared not only the room, but the bed.

One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite 1at the answer. Thinking he had not made 2 understood or the girl had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the girl still kept saying, “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know 3 to say.
What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t 4恭维)in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”. She 5 understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest. In the west, people will feel proud and 6 when they are praised(赞扬). So if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, “Thank you.”
In our country we think being modest is a virtue (美德) and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not 7 being proud, so sometimes you should be confident 8 being modest.
9 you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well”, while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down on by others. When asking for a job, if one says something like “Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try ”, he or she will 10 get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence.
