Jennifer was sitting on the bench. After all she went through, it was just what she needed. ‘It’s getting

She wanted to know her

It was really dark when she finally reached her front door. It seemed different to her.

She entered the

She went to her parents’ room. She found her there. Her

11
, as if she wasn’t asleep for days. Jennifer wanted to wake her up
12
she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her.
When Jennifer

the old clothes she ran away in. She was on her own bed.
It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice ask, ‘Are you feeling better now, dear? You know you

Smiling is the most attractive human behavior. The power of smiling can work out many wonders. I love to take a walk around the small neighborhood where I live. Whoever I meet on the way, they always give me a friendly greeting with a nice smile as soon as our eyes contact
1
. I smile back. This kind of smiling exchange represents the most
2
part of my jogging experience in the States.
My daughter's smile is just like sunlight, which warms me inside the same way
3
the sun warms my body. It can clear away any clouds and unpleasant feelings. The smile of my wife, however, makes me enjoy the
4
of an elegant woman, it can sometimes relax me quite a lot.
Julia Robert's
5
is nothing but roaring like an earthquake. Americans may have
6
opinions in many things, but they all agree that Julia is America's sweetheart. Her laugh plays a very good part in her acting. Once I tried some candy in a store, the owner asked me how sweet the candy is, I said sweeter than Julia Robert.
7
both of us broke into a kind of Julia's laugh. Yes, laugh is something we can not do without. Otherwise, our life would be too
8
.
Smiling does not belong to human alone. Once I stayed at an American home and he had a little dog named Mini. When I held her gently and asked her to give me a little smile,
9
just opened her mouth wide and half closed her eyes, looking like smiling.

Homesick is a compound (复合的) word made up of “home” and “sick”. You know
1
each word means on its own, of course. But think about what the words mean when they are
2
together. “Homesick” means “Thinking of home, unhappy away from home.” In other words, it means “sick for home”.
Now think for a minute
3
the word SEASICK. If you change the word “home” in the definition (定义) to the word “sea”, would the definition
4
“seasick” ? Does seasick mean “thinking of sea, unhappy away from sea”? It means something quite
5
. Seasick means “made sick by the only place where you are on the sea.” It means “sick because of the sea.” When you are homesick, the only place you want to be is at home. When you are seasick, the
6
place you want to be is at sea.
Have you ever
7
a person being heartsick? Heartsick does not mean that something is wrong with a person’s heart. People are heartsick when they are
8
down deep inside as if (好像) their hearts are broken.
And so, when you are carsick, you are “made sick by the movement of a car on the road.” You are sick because of the car, not sick for it.
You can see, then, that
9
compound words are what they seem at first glance (一瞥). Think about the compound words, such as handshake and
10
. Perhaps you may write definitions for them. It must be helpful to know something like this in your English study.

Washington DC, the capital of the USA, is a beautiful city, but there are
1
poor and hungry people in it.

When your mother want to tell you something, she uses words. Birds can’t speak
1
we do, but some birds can make sounds to warn their young of
2
.They have
3
own way of making the young birds do certain things.
The jackdaw is a kind of black bird
4
lives in Europe. Jackdaws live together in flocks. Young jackdaws do not know their enemies. When an old jackdaw sees a dog, it makes a loud rattling
5
.The young birds know this sound means
6
is nearby. The sound warns them
7
their enemies.
8
a young jackdaw is in a
9
place, a jackdaw parent
10
over the young bird’s back from behind. The parent’s tail feathers move
11
from side to side. It’s trying to say “
12
”.At the same time, the
13
bird calls out Key-aw Key-aw, which seems to say FLY HOME WITH ME. The young bird then follows the older
14
to go home.
Young jackdaws
15
learn what certain sounds mean. They know the meaning of these sounds from they hatch.

11
she still asked me to get into her car . I looked at her

in and she took me all the way to my house . I thanked her and wanted to
14
her some money . She refused (拒绝) and went off before I
15
ask for her name . I was really lucky to meet such a kind woman in the strange city.
