Americans can travel almost anywhere they choose. But to protect (保护) its people, the government lists a few dangerous places where Americans cannot go. These places are unfriendly countries or countries at war. There, the travelers might not be safe. These countries are listed in a small book called a passport (护照).
This passport is for the safety of its traveling people. It is also a government’s pledge (保证) that the people will follow the rules of the host country. To receive a passport from the government, a traveler must show that he is an American citizen (公民). An American cannot go abroad without a passport. Only the close countries such as Canada and Mexico do not ask for passports. The traveler’s picture is inside the passport. Children traveling with their parents are also in one parent’s book.

There are over 800 boarding (寄宿) schools in the UK with students from home and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the country. But the earliest boarding schools were set up for white, rich boys only. Now both boys and girls can go to boarding schools from the age of 7 to 18.
What to do
In the UK, boarding schools have three terms in a school year, with about 13 weeks in each term. Students study and live together. They can’t go outside if they are not allowed to. In some schools, each student has his or her subject plan. Besides the usual classrooms and laboratories, the boarding schools have lots of other facilities for their students, including music rooms, boats, swimming pools, cinemas and theatres. Most boarding schools have a “light out” time. So when it’s time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off. There are house-masters to take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
What to wear
Nearly all students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.
_______________
In the UK, boarding schools provide students with delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simply bread. They can also choose between a meal with no meat and another meal at lunch and dinner. And there is always self-service for salad (沙拉), other side dishes and a dessert. Students can also make themselves something to eat at any time in a kitchen, or drink tea or have a snack between meals

Today there are 6.4 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion . There are a lot of people to feed. We need more  and more food.
One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic(遗传的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified(改变的) foods, or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases; a kind of rice is being prepared , for example , which stops people becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are,. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them, because they are unnatural. They may feed people , then hurt them or their children later. But both rich and poor countries are interested in their use, and they are not going to go away. Prana, our beautiful dog whose name means ‘breath of life’, isn’t with us any more. But she brought such joy and love that we still miss her.
There are so many wonderful stories about the love in this dog, but my favorite is this one.
It was an autumn day in Minnesota, but the weather didn’t know the difference between autumn and winter. Unexpectedly, we were hit with a big snow fall for which no one was prepared.
We have two apple trees in our backyard. Prana loved apples. When she went outside, she’d take hold of an apple, put it far back in her mouth, and sneak into the house to save for eating later. The apples had been on the ground and were often dirty so I wasn’t always happy that Prana had brought them into the house. Feeling my displeasure, she would turn her head so I wouldn’t see her hidden treasure.
On the day that it snowed too early in the season, Prana went outside and I watched her from the window. I noticed that she was madly digging holes and brought the apples to the surface so they could be seen above the snow. I wondered why she was doing this. She seemed to be completely busy with some kind of important task to dig up as many apples as possible during her yard time.
When I called her back into the house, she had her usual one apple in her mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The yard was completely covered with birds. Prana had dug up all those apples for her bird friends to eat. She knew that they wouldn’t have stored enough food to live through such an early winter

Like many people ,I have no clear idea about heroes . A t some point , we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics (特点) which give us courage  and make us want to learn from them.
A hero does something worth (值) talking about, A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just person with great fame (声誉).
A hero has power(力量) larger than himself . Some people want to live like a hero. And they have to experience life with new and further meaning .A sure test for would- be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If their answer suggests they serve only own fames, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision from the mountain top .He has the power to move people . He creates new possibility. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain, Without Martin Luther King .Jr, Americans might take different parks , and shop in different stores of the different colors of their skins.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of the change would be rather slow . Thanks to heroes in history ,they make the society develop so rapidly
