As an exchange student, I have been staying in a host family in Beijing for the past five months. The parents are1in their mid-30s and the son just turned 5. In exchange for room and board, I teach their son2.
Like in many of the other Chinese families, he’s an only child. And though he has3plastic trucks and boxes full of crayons, I don’t know4he has the time to play. When he’s not in the kindergarten, he’s taking after-school classes. On the weekends, the boy goes to more classes. He has one day off―Sunday.
Compared to his schedule, I feel like my childhood was5a waste of time. I learned how to climb trees and draw cartoons. I wasn’t learning Chinese at his age. But he and lots of other children are learning English. Both his parents dream that he will have6jobs, higher pay, and bigger houses.
The boy seems to take no interest7learning English. He doesn’t need a teacher, but a playmate. He is,8, only 5. When I think about my life as a 5-year-old, I know for sure I wasn’t half as9as he is.
In the evening, when his parents10him to speak with me in English, he gets11. He lies on the floors, hides under the table and climbs on the furniture. When he finally stops12, and starts talking, it isn’t in English, but it isn’t in Chinese,13. He speaks in his own language.
He14not be a very good student, but I’m not a great teacher. I just want to be his big brother15can speak in gibberish(胡言乱语) with him and help draw trucks, robots or spiders.

There are times in our lives when we remember. Remembering the good things of 1 is a most precious (宝贵的) time; these memories are 2 in the corner of my mind.
When I was four years old, I often went to a kindergarten (幼儿园). I 3 many toys and friends that made me laugh and cry. The teachers were 4 and friendly. They taught us many interesting songs and games.
We played all day long. We did not know what learning was at that time, 5 we were learning every day.
When I was 6 years old, I started school. I was very 7 because I became a school student and began to learn school subjects. My favourite subject was 8. I remember, the first day, our science teacher told us the sun was like a big fire ball and 9 was very, very far away. Nobody could stay close to that "ball". We were quite surprised and kept our mouths open. We began to wonder at the 10 of the universe(宇宙). Later on, more ideas 11 weather, planes, railways, wildlife, deserts and even pollution came to our ears. We began to learn 12.
When I was about ten years old, I 13 quite a lot of things. I began to read newspapers, keep a diary, visit museums 14 make many friends. Every day was something new. Every day was interesting and exciting.
Now I am in the middle school. Each day is new to me. Happily I am still learning, which is like a journey to me. I have finished the first part, but there is still a long 15 for me to go. I hope I will become a learned person someday.
