During my second year of middle school, our teacher gave us a test. I studied hard and
1
well in all the subjects, so the questions were not difficult for me.
2
I stopped when I read the last one:“What is the
3
of the woman that cleans the school?”
Of course this was a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She was short and about 60 years old. She had dark hair. But
4
would I know her name? I had never talked
5
her before. In fact, I had never even thought about talking to her. I started to feel rather guilty(惭愧的).Finally, I
6
my paper, without finishing the last question.
Before the class ended, one student asked, “Will be last question count(计入) toward
7
grade?” “Of course,” the teacher said, “In your life, you will meet many people. All are important. They deserve(值得) your attention and care, even if you just
8
and say hello to them.”
I’ve never forgotten that
9
. I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, perhaps, the most
10
lesson of my life. Later, I learned that the cleaning woman’s name was Dorothy.

He looked and looked. After a while, a friend came along. “What’s the matter with you?” asked his friend. “I am

9
did you lose it?” “I lost it in my house.” “You lost your ring in your house, but you are looking for it in the street. How foolish you are!” “Ah,” said the man, “but it is dark in my house. I will never find it there. Anyhow, here in the street, it is much

. I can see everything more clearly.” My dear friend, do you think Frank could find his gold ring in the street?

It was Monday. Mrs. Smith’s dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house. Thinking that there was no
1
way, Mrs. Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words
2
it:“Give my dog half a pound of meat.”Then she gave the paper to her dog and said, “
3
this to the butcher, and he’s going to give you your lunch today.”
4
the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s shop. It gave the paper to the butcher. The butcher read it
5
, recognized that it was
6
the lady’s handwriting and soon did
7
he was asked to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up at once.
At midday, the dog came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After reading it, he gave half a pound of meat
8
.
The next day, the dog came again just at midday. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at the paper, and gave the dog
9
meat, for he had regarded the dog as one of his customer.
But, the dog came again at four o’clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher’s surprise, it came for the third time at six o’clock. The butcher
10
puzzled. He said to himself, “This is a small dog. Why does Mrs. Smith give it so much meat to eat today? ”
Looking at the piece of paper, he found that there were not any words there.

When you sit and watch TV hour after hour, do you ever think of what it may be doing to your health?
More and more children are becoming overweight(超重)and near-sighted
1
they spend too much time in front of the TV. Also, they are growing less and less creative(有创造性的)because watching TV doesn’t
2
any active thought.
Last week, the TV-Turnoff Organization began its ninth TV-Turnoff
3
in the USA. The Organization encourages people to play games, read books, lie under a tree, talk to family members and friends
4
watching TV.
American school children
5
, on average(平均), 1000 hours a year watching TV--more time than they spend in school. That’s too much, said the doctors
6
organized this year’s TV-Turnoff Week.
Doctors said that the
7
children watch television, the more overweight they may become. The food children eat while they watch the television makes this weight
8
more serious.
To keep mentally and physically healthy, children need to take exercise, talk with friends and family, read, and
9
the world around them. Could you go a week without television? It might be
10
for many TV lovers, but why not give it a try?

Last month the manager of a jewelry shop (珠宝店) received a letter. As he was very busy then, the letter lay on his desk till tea-time. He opened it and a 10-pound note(票) fell out onto the desk. Within the note was a letter which said:
Dear sir:
In 1935 I got engaged(订婚). But unfortunately I lost my job. At the time a lot of people were out of work. Six months later I got a job again, but of course I was very short of money. I came to your shop to buy a wedding ring(婚戒). The assistant took out some rings for me to look at, but she was called away for a moment, and I put one of the rings in my pocket. When she came back, I said I didn’t know the size of my girl’s finger. So I left the shop without buying a ring. My wife died a short while ago and the fact that I never paid for the ring has been heavy in my heart all these years. Are you carrying too much on your back at school? I’m sure lots of children of your age will, say "Yes". Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags.
Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of schools bags being too heavy for them.
"It’s hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it’s so heavy, "said Rick Hammond, an 11-year-old student in the US.
Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps(带子) to carry them, but many other students choose rolling(有滚轮的)bags.
But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags.
But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight(重量).
Scott Bautch, a back doctor, said children under Grade 4 should stay with 10 % . But it is also important that older children don’t stay with over 15 %, because their bodies are still growing. "Children are losing their balance(平衡) and falling down with their school bags, "he said.
Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin workbooks for students to take home.
One of the best answers is, as some children said, to have no homework at all!
