Once upon a time, there was a poor orphan boy called Dick Whittington. The people in his village believed that the streets of London were paved with gold. So Dick decided to travel there and become a rich man.

Dick walked for many days, but when he arrived in London, there were no streets of gold! Tired and hungry, he fell asleep on the steps of a great house.

The house belonged to a rich businessman who found Dick and gave him a job cleaning the kitchen. Dick worked very hard and was happy. He had enough to eat and at night he could sleep by the fire. There was a problem though! At night, rats ran around the kitchen and kept him awake.

So Dick went out and found the fastest rat-catching cat in London! The cat caught all the rats that came into the house and Dick could sleep at night.

The businessman heard about the amazing cat and asked Dick if he could take it on his ship to catch rats on his next journey. Dick agreed, but was very sad to see the cat go.

While the businessman was away, the other servants were very mean to Dick. So Dick decided to run away. But as he was leaving, one of the great church bells rang. It seemed to say, "Turn back, Dick Whittington, Mayor of London!”

So Dick came back to the house and soon the businessman returned. He was very happy because Dick's cat had caught all the rats on the ship. He gave Dick a reward and promoted him to his assistant.

In what ways has global warming changed our world? Rising sea levels, melting glaciers(冰川) are just a few examples. But did you know that global warming can also bring other changes?

Ending racial(种族的) differences

Global warming causes droughts and poor harvests. This can make people leave their homelands and move to other places. In just 125 years, there may be fewer people with dark skin or pale skin. More people will have brown-colored skin.

Making insects hungrier

When it is warmer, insects’ body temperatures go up along with the outside temperature. This is very different from humans, who can keep their body temperature at a certain level. Higher body temperatures can step up the insects metabolism(新陈代谢). This makes them hungrier, so they need to eat more. And this also makes insects bred(繁殖) more quickly.

Helping scientists find historic sites

Britain had a very dry and hot summer this year because of global warming. After the dry weather turned the country’s green landscape yellow, people noticed some unusual patterns in the middle of a field. That s because grass that grows above them has a different color and height from other grass. This helped people see the patterns. After studying these patterns, scientists found something old and a Roman farm.

1.According to the passage, which skin color will be more common in the future?

A.Dark. B.Pale. C.Yellow. D.Brown.

2.How will global warming make insects hungrier?

A.Because they will grow as big as humans.

B.Because only large insects can live in high temperatures.

C.Because their metabolism will go faster as temperatures are higher.

D.Because they can’t keep their body temperature at a certain level.

3.Because of the hot weather, people in England found______________.

A.new landscapes B.grass with different colors

C.some unusual patterns in a field D.an old country under a field

4.What can we infer from the story?

A.Global warming is not a problem at all.

B.Scientists are happy with global warming.

C.Global warming is happening more quickly.

D.Farmers will face problems because of global warming.

Schools almost look the same-square buildings and rooms, rows of desks, and a teacher standing in the front. What can schools do to make their learning environments(环境) better? What will future schools look like? Some schools have a new try. Let's take a look.

Open & interactive(互动的)

With the internet, campuses(校园) are no longer the only place where students can get education and information. “In the internet age, the most important thing of a campus is social space to meet and learn from each other ,” said Thomas,a British architect(建筑师). “It offers more chances for teachers and students to Interact.”

And the school’s classrooms are all round. They have no corners or backs and fronts. They can all sit around round tables and have a discussion when studying.

Creative & sporty

Some schools have to give up their playgrounds because they don't have enough land. But this is not the case for a primary school in Hangzhou. The school is round, with a running track(跑道) on its roof. But students don't have to worry about falling off the building. A reinforced glass(钢化玻璃) wall and steel fences along the track are there to protect students. “Childhood would be much less fun if children lost the right to enjoy running,” said architect Tony, designer of the school. The open track not only gives students a way to stay fit, but also makes them creative.

Closer to nature

Future schools should not be like factories, but gardens. There is a good example of such a “garden school”.

Some of the school’s buildings are tall and some are short. And the rooftops are covered with green grass. This makes the campus look like hills. For the students there, there are gardens, big and small, in almost every part of the campus. It also extends(扩展) the teaching space from closed rooms to outdoor spaces.
