I’m still remembering my science teacher, Mr. Jackson. On the first day of class, he gave us a talk about an animal called wampus. He told us that the wampus lived on earth millions of years ago during the Ice Age and died out because of the change of climate(气候). We all listened carefully and took _______ of everything he said. Later we had a test.

When the exam paper was returned to me, I was _______ and sad. There was a big red “×” through each of my answers. I failed. But how come? Anyway, on the test paper, I had written down _______ Mr. Jackson said in class.

Then I realized that no one passed the exam at all. What had happened?

“Very simple,” Mr. Jackson explained. “I had _______ all that story about the wampus. There had never been any such animal, so the information in your notes was not correct. Do you _________ to get high marks for incorrect answers?”

There was no need to say we were _______. What kind of test was this? What kind of teacher was he?

How could we believe he gave us so much information about an animal that had not been there at all? How was it possible for us students to doubt what the teacher taught us?

“The zeros on your papers will be _______ in your grade books,” he said. And he did it.

Through this _______ Mr. Jackson hoped that we would learn something. Teachers and books are not always right. In fact, no one is. He told us not to let our mind go to sleep. _______, we should keep thinking all the time and speak up if we think there are mistakes in our teachers’ words or in books.

We should develop the habit of ________, and the ability to decide by ourselves. What a special lesson he gave us!

Mark Twain once said that everyone talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it. This was true in his day. But it may not be the cave in today’s world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.

Cloud seeding(云催化) is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals like dry ice or silver iodide(碘化银) inside of clouds, either by rocket or airplane. This changes water content inside the cloud, which helps to control the rainfall, the time and even the place where it rains.

This technology has helped to solve natural disasters, such as droughts(干旱). It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.

Cloud seeding has been put into use for some time, however, some scientists are still wondering whether this technology is safe. On one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects(副作用). For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same, so every new experiment introduces new conditions.

In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes. Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers(激光). Others believe that burning rock oil in a hurricane’s path could slow the storms down.

1.The material above may be from a(an) ___________.

A.poem B.play C.advertisement D.magazine

2.What can we learn about cloud seeding?

A.Cloud seeding may not be environmentally friendly.

B.Cloud seeding can solve all the problems caused by rain.

C.Cloud seeding technology is welcomed by all the scientists.

D.Cloud seeding has been in use to control storms and hurricanes.

3.This passage is probably written to tell ___________.

A.the advantages of cloud seeding B.the importance of technology

C.the ways of controlling the weather D.the side effects of cloud seeding

Once upon a time, there lived a married couple who lived a happy but poor life in a farmhouse. In the kitchen at the back of the house, they had a small window, which looked onto their neighbor’s garden. In the garden, a witch(巫婆) grew a wonderful vegetable with beautiful purple flowers called a rampion or rapunzel: Nobody ever tried to go into the garden because it was owned by an evil(邪恶的) witch, who had great magical powers. Everyone was afraid of her, even though nobody had ever seen her. The stories that parents told their children about her were so frightening that the garden never had visitors.

The couple and their daughter were feeling very hungry one day: They hadn’t eaten anything for three days because they couldn’t afford to buy food. The husband decided to climb over the wall that evening and take some rapunzels. The wife cooked the plants and they were so tasty that the husband decided to get some more the next evening.

The moon and stars were shining brightly as he climbed over the witch’s wall and into her garden. He picked a huge handful of the plants. As he was walking back to the wall, he heard a terrible voice shout, “How dare(胆敢) you! Those are mine, you thief.”

“Oh, please, Madam!” cried the husband. “We haven’t eaten a meal in days. I just wanted some of your rapunzels to help my wife and daughter.”

The witch thought for a minute. “Very well.” she said. “I’ll allow you to take as many as you like. But you must give me your daughter. She shall live with me. I shall become her mother.”

The husband was shocked at the offer, but he was so crazy with hunger that he agreed. The witch went to his home and took the young baby away. “I’ll call her Rapunze,” she laughed as she put the tiny girl on her broomstick and flew up into the sky.

Depression(抑郁症) is a serious problem today. One expert says that depression is like cancer because it is “widespread, costly and deadly”. Depression hits one person in five around the world.

Although people have believed depression to be a problem among the rich and educated, studies show that depression is a problem among everyone. Over any six-month period, between five to seven percent of the world’s population will be suffering from a serious depression.

A recent study shows that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults.

The researchers used a national long-term survey of teenage health to investigate the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 2000.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average(平均) of 5 and a half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.

Seven years later, in 2007, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one.

The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount(总量) of media use. It’s still uncertain if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility is that it was taking time away from activities help prevent depression.

Last December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are likely to be socially active, to read, to take part in religious services and to vote.

C.Teenagers are more likely to develop depression.

D.It is a common illness that can be cured easily.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Social activities may lead to depression.

B.Watching TV may increase the risk of developing depression.

C.Teenagers should play more video games instead of watching TV.

It’s a big challenge for you to complete any personal goal in time. And it always seems that you won’t have enough time to finish all you need to do. Do you know the way to make the time for your goal? Here are some tips which may help you.

Focus on(集中) one thing at a time. Remember not to take on too many goals at a time, or your energy will be used up soon. Once one goal is finished, you can go to the next one. Set up at least a month per goal.

Prioritize(优先处理) the most important. We have more than one thing to complete. If we put all the things before our goal, we won’t ever find the time for it. If we put our goal at the first place, we’ll make the time.

Keep your goal simple. It’s important not to make your goal too difficult. If you want to be slim, for example, you just need to develop the habit for your health, walking each day(or running, or cycling etc), drinking more water, eating fruits and vegetables instead of junk snacks.

Shut your door. Try to set a time that you won’t be disturbed(打扰). If you are disturbed from time to time, you really don’t have the time to help out. So you must shut your door when working on the most important tasks. If so, you will get them done better.

Stop wasting time. In our daily life, there are many things wasting your time, such as watching drama series and going to bars. If you don’t do them, it won’t make a great difference to your life. So stop doing them to free up time for your goals.

If you follow the above, you will succeed in achieving your goal.
