You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right? You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything? Well, it’s not! In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First your eyes check out what’s going on, then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react (反应), and then your muscles (肌肉) go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that!

The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ (器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!

Your brain stops growing when you’re 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won’t be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment (建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.

So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.

Walter Dean Myers, born on August 12, 1937, was an American writer of children’s books. He was known for young adult literature (文学). He wrote more than 100 books, including picture books and non-fiction. “I care about writing for young people because I remember how much I needed help and guidance at that time in my life," Myers said in his book.

Myers loved writing. He got up at five o’clock every morning. He worked at home in a small office that used to be his son’s bedroom.

Myers would first write an outline (提纲) for every book. He called this prewriting. He imagined what the story would be and write down ideas in a notebook. To make sure there are enough actions and dialogues for a good story, he thought of 30 scenes. He wrote a short description of each scene in his notebook.

He also cut down the pictures of real people and put them in his office wall. He looked at those pictures and came up with ideas. Once he knew what the story would be and who the characters were, he began to write the book. He wrote five pages a day on his computer.

Myers usually worked on three books at a time. When he was not prewriting or writing a book, he might rewriting something he had already completed. Then he would send his story to his agent. He or she made suggestion for the story.

After these final changes were made, the book was published and made its way to bookstores and libraries. By that time, Myers would begin to write his next book. “I want to do that I can with my writing” said Myers.

I went to England last year. I enjoyed my stay, and I noticed something interesting with the English way of life.

For example, you must say Mr or Mrs when you meet someone for the first time. When you get to know each other better or when they ask you to, you can just use their first names.

One day, we visited some friends and had afternoon tea together. Afternoon tea is not just a drink but a light meal at around 4 pm. We ate sandwiches and a large fruit cake. In England, you usually drink tea with milk, too.

Fish and chips is traditional food in England. You can buy it and eat it in special fish and chip shops on the high street, or you can take it away and eat it with your fingers! It is delicious!

At the bus stop, you must not push your way onto the bus. You need to stand in a line and wait your turn. Sometimes people are slow to get on the bus. Once I noticed a gentleman touch a young man on the shoulder, smile politely and say, “Excuse me! Are you waiting for this bus?” He was really polite.
