Wright brothers: pioneers of the plane

Hundreds of years ago, most people thought that human beings would ________ fly. Yet two brothers tried to break the limits (界限). Orville and Wilbur Wright were the pioneers (先驱) of airplanes.

Orville Wright ________ on August 19, 1871 and his older brother, Wilbur Wright, came to the world on April 16, 1867 in the US. The two started their career (职业) by running a printing (印刷) business and later a bicycle repair shop. But they spent their ________ time working on a flying machine.

“If birds can fly for long periods of time, then ________ can’t I?” Orville Wright said. The brothers studied how birds move through the air and tried to use it on their models.

Finally, on Dec 17, 1903, their first plane took off in the air. The plane had a wingspan (翼展) of 40 feet (about 12 meters). The brothers controlled (控制) it by moving a cradle (支架). Modern aviation was born.

The Wright brothers were not the first to ________ and fly experimental aircraft. But they were the first to invent (发明) aircraft controls. These controls allowed the ________ to fly the aircraft effectively (有效地).

So, next time, when you are enjoying yourself on an airplane, remember to say thank you to the two brothers.

Answer the questions(根据以下内容回答问题)

My name is Amy. Although I am a mother of three children who are in the middle school, I still remember some experiences (经历) about my childhood. Sometimes I talk with my children about them after supper. The following is one of my experiences.

When I was about 12 years old, I really wanted a new bike! I told my parents my birthday wish, but I knew there was little hope because my family could hardly afford (负担得起) it.

On my birthday my parents told me they had my gift outside in the back yard (院子). I rushed out to the yard. There was my bike, but it wasn’t the bike that I thought it would be. This one was pink, old and worn with age. I felt so disappointed! I thought I hurt my parents’ feelings because I was sure they could see the disappointment on my face. I got on the old bike and rode it, feeling bad that I had made my parents feel this way. So I put on a smile, rode as fast as I could and didn’t look back.

As time went by, I began to understand that my parents gave me something much more than just a rusty (生锈的) old bike. They gave me a life lesson (感悟) about love. I like to remember this story because giving a gift is not about money. It’s about how much love you can feel from it. Remember this: a gift that costs $2 isn’t any less valuable (有价值的) than one that costs $100.
