Hughes is a 24-year-old man from the UK. He often wears the same clothes for many days because he doesn’t know how to use a washing machine.

This is not a joke. Hughes is not the only one who doesn’t have basic(基本的)life skills. A study shows that today’s young people in the UK are less able than people before when it comes to basic life skills.

For example, about 35% don’t know how to sew (缝) and 11% don’t understand how to iron (熨烫) clothes.

This problem is shared by young people in the United States as well. Many young men in the US are losing the skill of cooking, and they like to order take-out food .

Technology(科技)may be the main reason for this. Born and raised in a digital age (数字化时代), young people often use phones and computers. For example, with GPS always at hand, young people have no need to learn how to read maps.

However, this does not mean that young men can not do basic everyday tasks. As their lives have changed, the main life skills have changed as well.

The study results show that although only 45% know how to pay their water bills(账单)after leaving home, 72% could help set up a WiFi network in a new house.

Do you feel lonely when your best friend isn’t around? Here’s our advice to you–and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.

It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around–maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel left out during break or lunchtime. You want to make new friends, but how do you find them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has his or her own friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.

Start by looking around your classroom–think about which kids you’d like to play with during break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer(主动) to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say “Hi, may I join you?” or just join in.

If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching people up. The most important thing to make friends is to be a friend. Being kind, being friendly, sharing, saying nice things, offering help–pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.

You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other again, you can share something you didn’t have before he or she left: You can introduce him or her to your new friends!

Anne and Joseph are talking about an interesting question. Why do some people change their names? There can be many reasons. Hanna changed her name to Anne because she thought it would be easier for people to remember. On the other hand, Joseph is thinking about changing his name to an unusual name because he wants to be different.

People have a lot of reasons for changing their names. Film stars, singers, sportsmen and some other famous people often change their names because they want names that are not ordinary(普通的), or that have a special sound. They chose the “new name” for themselves instead of the name their parents gave them when they were born.

Some people have another reason for changing their names. They have moved to a new country and want to use a name that is usual there. For example, Li Kaiming changed his name to Ken Lee when he moved to the United States. He uses the name Ken at his job and at school. But with his family and Chinese friends, he uses Li Kaiming. For some people, using different names makes life easier in their new country.

In many countries, a woman changes her family name to her husband’s after she gets married(结婚). But today, many women are keeping their own family name and not using their husband’s. Sometimes, women use their own name in some situations(情况) and their husband’s in other situations. And some use both their own name and their husband’s.
