Lonely Planet was founded by Tony and Maureen Wheeler. Maureen was born in Belfast,Northern Ireland. At age 20 she moved to London, where she met Tony Wheeler and got married with him. Just days after graduating in 1972,Tony and his wife Maureen drove from London to Afghanistan and eventually arrived in Sydney, Australia. Although at the end of the trip, they almost had no money left, they were very happy. Later in the year, people they met asked them continually—How did you travel? What did you see? What did it cost? These made them to turn their diaries into the first Lonely Planet book.

They spent a long time writing their first travel guide,Across Asia on the Cheap,in their home in Australia. Within a week they had sold about 1. 500 copies. The Lonely Planet Story is an unusual mix of autobiography(自传),business history and travel book. The book was soon became the backpackers' bible. Then the Wheelers set up a publishing company called" Lonely Planet Publications." They have produced travel guides to just about every corner of the globe. In 2009,the company changed its name to "Lonely Planet".

Sometimes we forget that many things we use every day were not always there. They had to be i1.. Someone had to have an idea. Then they had to do a lot of experiments with the idea until it worked well. Here are few you might like to read about:

In Maine, the northeast of the U. S., winters are long, windy and cold. Every winter, Chester Greenwood's ears got so cold that they turned colors. When he was 15, Chester got ice skates for his birthday. He wanted to go skating. The cold wind and his frozen ears soon sent him running home. The next day, Chester tied a scarf around his ears. It was w2., but too uncomfortable. Then he got a GREAT IDEA.

Chester made two oval loops out of wire. He asked his grandmother to sew covers on the ovals Then she connected the ovals with another wire. The ovals fit over his ears. Chester had invented earmuffs! They saved his ears and made him rich. People in Maine found another way to r3. Chester. December 21th, the first of winter, is Chester Greenwood Day.

Sometimes inventions happen by chance. As a boy. Thomas Alva Edison was called Al. When he was 12 years old, he got his first j4.. He sold newspapers and candies on the train. One day on the job, he bravely s5. a boy from being run over by a train. The boy's father worked a telegraph. Al asked how to run a telegraph. Not only did Al learn the telegraph, but he made a better one. It was one of his earliest GREAT IDEAS

Edison's new telegraph made a lot of money. Later,he became the first person to o6.and run an invention business. He was good at that, too. We could thank Thomas Edison every day. He had many, many GREAT IDEAS such as bulbs, movie cameras, and batteries. Edison is the one who invented more things than a7.else in the world.

So,who knows? You might invent something some day!

How can you create public transport in the Amazon jungle(亚马逊丛林)without polluting it?The Achuar people(阿丘雅人)in Ecuador(厄瓜多尔)have found a clever solution.

Since April 2017,a boat powered completely by solar energy has travelled along the rivers that connect nine different small villages in the jungle. The boat,Tapiatpia,is named after a special kind of electric eel(电鳗)in the area. It has given the Amazon its first solar—powered public transport system. It creates no pollution in the jungle which is home to the largest number of plants and animals in the world.

Transport in the area used to rely on boats powered by petrol(汽油). These boats were expensive to run because petrol here cost five times more than that in the capital city of Quito(基多). Tapiatpia is cheaper to run,and therefore the fare for each stop is lower. A solar—powered boat ride costs one dollar per stop for each passenger, while a petrol—powered boat ride costs at least five dollars.

The solar-powered boat, which can carry 18 people at a time,is changing life in the jungle. More children go to school because the fare is more affordable. Besides, when someone is ill,his family or friends can call the boat on the radio:the boat will come immediately and take the patient to a health center quickly. More inter-village sporting events. are held, too, because of the use of the solar-powered boat.

Many people think the solar-powered boat can be used in the rest of the Amazon, where there is an urgent need for both public transport and environmental protection.
