Long, long ago, there lived a king. His name was Shahryar. He and his brother Shazaman got married(结婚) to two evil sisters. But Shahzaman's wife cast an evil spell(施毒咒) on her husband. So he died of a bad disease(死于恶病).

The news reached the king Shahryar. He felt sorry for his brother Shahzaman. So he killed(处死) his brother's wife. Just then some holy men(圣人) came to see the king and the princess.

But the queen(王后) treated them badly. When Shahryar heard the news he was very angry and killed his wife too. He decided to take revenge(报复) on women. So he married a girl every day and killed her the next day for some reason. As days passed and all the women were killed.

Then, he married Shahitha Banu. She was very clever and a good storyteller. She worked out a plan in her mind. After the wedding was over both the king and Shahitha Banu were in their room. She asked the king to listen to a very interesting story. The story went on till late night and into the morning. But the story did not come to an end. Banu stopped for a while and said, “Now it is morning and you have work in the day. So I will continue the story this night.”

The king should have killed the queen in the morning. But he wanted to know the next part of the story because it was very interesting. So he put off(推迟) killing her.

The next night, the queen began to tell the story, but the story didn’t come to an end. The story continued for several months. As days passed the king loved the queen so much. So the King decided not to kill her.
