For Iris grace, the world used to be a lonely place. The autistic (自闭症的) five-year-old girl seldom spoke and she often got nervous while being with other children.

Iris has been taught art since she was three years old. She spends most of her time painting. She paints so well that her works sell for at least 1, 500 pounds each. However, nothing could stop her loneliness until a cat called Thula came to live with the family last February. After Thula arrived, Iris’s parents have noticed Iris adding images like a cat’s eyes or nose to her paintings. At first, they thought Iris drew them by accident, but now they believe Iris is expressing her love to Thula in her paintings.

While Iris is painting, Thula always sits at her side and watches her with great interest. And when the family go out in the car, Iris always takes Thula with her.

Thula is having an influence on Iris’s relationships with others, too, and her parents find it easier to encourage her to speak when Thula is around Iris’s mother said, “Thanks to Thula, Iris is a lot happier than ever before.”

We all know that lying (说谎) is wrong. But do you know that it is bad for both your physical and mental health? A recent study shows that telling fewer lies helps people physically and mentally.

“For ten weeks, 110 people aged from 18 to 71 were tested to see the relationship between the number of lies they told and their health,” said Anita Kelly, a professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. “When they lied more, their health declined,” said Kelly.

Researchers divided the people into two groups. Group A was told to avoid telling any lie for any reason to anyone. They may omit (忽略) the truth, refuse to answer questions, and keep secrets, but they can’t say anything that they know are not true. Group B was not told anything like this.

Over the study period, when people in Group A told fewer lies in a week than they did in other weeks, they experienced fewer health problems such as sore throats and headaches. Professor Linda Stroh said, “When you find that you don’t lie, you have less stress (压力).” The results of past research show that each American tells about 11 lies a week. In both groups, when people lied less during a week, they reported better physical and mental health during that period.

“It’s certainly a good thing to have people be more honest,” said Robert Feldman of the University of Massachusetts. “It may improve our mental health, but I don’t think it can improve our physical health.”

Learning to love reading

Taking public transportation in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely (很少地) see people reading during their free time.

Are people’s attitudes toward reading different here? Not really. Data (数据) released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e-books over regular books.

However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the us than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature (文学). From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三国演义》) to the modern science-fiction books The Three-Body Problem (《三体》), and many other styles, Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works.

Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not feel like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely (肯定) have to read more and do more homework than US students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time.

But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own personal beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?

1.From Paragraph 1, what do we know about people in the US?

A. Most people take public transportation to work.

B. Students have homework to do on their way to school.

C. Many of them have the habit of reading.

D. They read books that are left behind on public transportation.

2.Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works including ________.

A. classic novels B. science-fiction books

C. realistic novels D. All above

3.Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Chinese people’s attitudes toward reading have changed.

B. Chinese people prefer e-books to regular books now.

C. Chinese people never read in their spare time.

D. Chinese people bought the most books from Amazon China in 2017.

4.Why is reading less popular in China, according to the author?

A. Because Chinese people prefer to watch plays instead of reading.

B. Because it’s hard to choose what to read.

C. Because Chinese people already read enough books during their childhoods.

D. Because People’s childhood experiences may influence their reading habits.

5.According to the author, reading books can ________.

A. help you learn more about schoolwork B. take too much of your time

C. make you feel tired D. change your view of the world
