Gabriella has spent the past year doing everything she could to help other kids. The 11-year-old girl raised thousands of dollars for a group — which makes sick kids’ wishes come true. She’s given money to cancer research, and worked hard to help people understand cancer better. She’s also donated her hair to a group — which makes wigs (假发) for kids who lost their hair.

All of that is pretty amazing. It’s even more amazing that Gabriella has done all this while fighting her own cancer.

Around Thanksgiving a year ago, doctors found Gabriella had cancer.

Because of her illness, Gabriella could ask for a wish from the wishes group. She asked for her own wish, but soon worked on helping make other sick kids’ wishes come true, too. A store promised to donate $1 for each letter to Santa Claus during the holiday season. Gabriella asked people to send Santa Claus letters by starting a social-media page, and the letters poured in. In the end, Gabriella’s effort raised $275,000 for the wishes group enough to pay for wishes for about 36 other kids.

Since then, Gabriella has given speeches about cancer to thousands of people. She’s busy but never too busy to figure out new ways to help others. Her family has even started a charity to raise money to cure cancer like hers. Gabriella says, “My saying is: ‘You might have a bad day today, but there’s always a shining star to look forward to tomorrow.’”

Peer pressure is that strong feeling you might get to do the same things as other people of your age if you want them to like you. There is nobody that wants to be talked about or laughed at. But regretfully (遗憾地), we can’t always do things we like and have to forget who we truly are sometimes because it becomes more important for us to fit in with those around us.

Sometimes the pressure that we feel involves (参与) unimportant things, like being considered cool or dressing fashionably. We feel like doing things others do and saying things others say. Like starting to drink, because everyone does it, or maybe one of our friends drinks. But we do it anyway because we don’t want others to think we are scared. At that moment all that seems to be important to us is what they think of us, but later we regret the choice that we have made. Peer pressure often makes people take risks and put their life on the line.

So why do we give in to negative (消极的) peer pressure? Sometimes we just want to show that we are independent (独立的). Others may go along because they are curious to try something new that other people around them are doing. The idea of following the crowd (大众) influences our judgment (判断) or common sense. And most of the time we give in because we don’t want to be made fun of or talked about for not doing what others are doing. We also do it because we are afraid of being refused by others or because we aren’t sure of ourselves. Also, we do it because we don’t want to lose a friendship, or we want to be liked by everyone. Those who give in to peer pressure have low self-esteem (自尊), uncertainty about themselves, and don’t have a sense of self-worth.

Sometimes peer pressure can also be good. What we have to do is to learn to tell the difference between positive (积极的) and negative pressure. It is OK sometimes to follow the crowd but we have to recognize when it does us more harm than good.

1.Which of the following is most likely to cause peer pressure?

A. Our relatives invite us to attend a party.

B. Our teachers gave us a lot of homework.

C. Our parents expect high scores from us.

D. Our classmates take mobile phones to our school.

2.According to Paragraph 2, we sometimes do something wrong to show that we_________.

A. are scared B. are independent

C. have great talent D. have great courage

3.We give in to peer pressure to_________.

A. make others accept us B. attract others’ attention

C. prove our special value D. show our personality

4.Which idea may cause us to make a wrong judgment according to the passage?

A. Nobody is perfect. B. Nothing is impossible.

C. Everyone else is doing it. D. Just follow your own belief.

Problem solving is an important skill in our lives. While each problem requires a different skill to solve it, there are certainly common problem solving techniques that can be used in many situations. First, it’s important to make sure that you have the right opinions about your problems. In other words, you should see problems as challenges and should try to get some joy out of solving them. It’s our problems that force us to grow, and it’s our problems that make our lives interesting.

Once you view them as challenges, you also need to realize that all problems can be solved or at least improved, if you think about them in the right way. This means you should take the time out of your day or your activities to pay attention to your problems and think about them for as long as it takes to find solutions (解决方法). And in this way, you will at least be able to feel that you’re doing something about them, and once you do come up with a plan, you may feel your problems are much more manageable.

When you do start coming up with your plan, there are some things that can help you. For example, writing down your thoughts can often help a lot. Form a mind map and start writing down related (相关的) things. This way you can visualize (形象化) the idea and you may feel as if you have really achieved something.

At the same time, don’t be afraid to ask others for help. In nine out of ten cases a problem involves (涉及) another person, then the problem can be solved or at least improved by talking to that person. If your problem isn’t urgent (紧急的), you can talk to people who have skills or experience, which can help you find solutions.

Sometimes you can try to imagine what you would advise yourself to do if you were another person. Imagine that someone else has your problem, what would the solution that you would tell them be? Sometimes this can help you see what might be stopping you all along. In many cases we actually know what the solution is, but we are just afraid of admitting (承认) it. This is because the solution involves a big change to our lifestyles, or because we are simply afraid of failure (失败). By taking a step back, you can realize what is stopping you, and then you can get it over and move forward.

Once there was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with white soft clouds. All that saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged (崎岖的) and bare(光秃的). Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain was a waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a bush, growing in a crack (裂缝) in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. She sat on her nest, watching the running water.

Which picture do you think won the prize?

The King chose the second picture.

Do you know why?

“Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means when facing unhappy situations, you can still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”
