Jane Goodall is a famous scientist. For more than 40 years, Goodall lived mostly in Tanzania in East Africa, studying chimpanzees (猩猩).

As a young child, Jane Goodall was interested in animals. She grew up in the English countryside and was always climbing trees or riding horses.

When Jane Goodall was 23, she got a chance to go to Africa. Even though she had never been to college, she got a job with a famous scientist named Louis Leakey.

One day Louis Leakey said he needed a volunteer. He needed someone to go to a lake in Tanzania to study a kind of chimpanzees. Jane was excited.

On July 16, 1960, she began her explore (探索). At first, the chimpanzees ran away from Jane. But with time passing, they got used to her being around.

Every day, Jane would follow the chimpanzees, taking notes on their behavior. She learned many new things about chimpanzees. She watched how a chimpanzee made a tool. May Day is a holiday in many parts of the world. But May Day means different things to different people. For some it is a time to celebrate spring. For others it is the day to remember the workers of the world.

May Day was popular in Europe for hundreds of years. The traditions were different from place to place. But the main idea was always the same—people celebrated the spring.

In Sweden, people made “ Old Man Winter” out of wood. They threw him on a fire to show the end of winter and the start of spring.

In English villages young people danced around the “maypole” —a tall pole in the centre of the town. A May Queen was chosen from the young women.

At one time, people believed that these May Day celebrations helped them to grow good crops for the next year. People don’t believe this today, but many of the traditions continue.

In the modern world, May Day is also the day to remember workers around the world. This day was chosen at an international meeting of socialists in Paris in 1889. They wanted to remember four men who died for workers’ rights in the US in 1886. Later, May Day became an important holiday in communist (共产主义的) countries. In other countries, people fight on this day for workers’ rights around the world.

Where is the world’s happiest place? The answer is Denmark, according to the 2016 World Happiness report.

Denmark is neither the richest nor the biggest country. So why do the 5.7 million people of Denmark smile so much?

The country has a perfect welfare system (福利制度). For example, the country supports parents if they want to be with their children, especially babies. Danish families receive a total of 52 weeks of parental leave (育婴假).

But besides that, the main reason Danish people are so happy is because of their lifestyle.

“We have no worries. And if we do worry, it’s about the weather. Will it rain today, remain grey or get cold?” Knud Christensen, a 39-year-old social worker from Copenhagen, said to the reporter.

Denmark is famous for its biking culture. In Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, bikes are used about 50 percent of the time on the way to school or work. Biking is not only helpful to protect the environment. It is also good for people’s health.

Trust also helps make Danish people happy. They trust others, including people they don’t even know. In Aarhus, the second biggest city of Denmark, you can see people buy flowers even when the owner isn’t there. People just put money in the empty flowerpot.

“ The Danish have no great expectations about what they will do or what will happen to them,” Kaire Christensen, a university teacher said, “They are happy with what they have.”
